Murong Yan

Murong Yan is a Murong-family Daoist Master who pursues immortality through the Valley Water lineage while serving in the northern campaign. His early confidence in testing Zhouwei gives way to suspicion when he discovers that his own backers have treated him as a possible sacrifice.

Biography

A test of Bright Yang and an unwanted sacrifice

Murong arrives south with his old companion Shilou Yingge and volunteers to test Zhouwei across the river. Though dismissive of Bright Yang’s present decline, he attacks with every advantage rather than offering a courteous exchange. Zhouwei resists his deceptive timing, swallowed-and-returned radiance and changes of form, forcing Murong to recognize the strength of his opponent’s weapon skills and hidden reserves. He ends the encounter without committing to a fatal contest, unwilling to suffer injury while the Rebirth Spring is nearing completion. (Chapters 1502–1505)

He rejoins Yingge in the northern fighting, but the campaign’s concealed arrangements leave him increasingly uneasy. After withdrawing from the river battle, he confronts Ch’i Lanyan over his lack of information and discovers that Wei Xuanyin is present. He must abandon his effort to exert pressure. The northern powers have cut off communication while keeping hidden protection nearby, hoping that injury and hostility will deepen his karmic ties to the Compassion Dao. Murong’s preference for an immortal future makes this manipulation particularly unwelcome. (Chapters 1528–1531 and 1543–1544)

Inside Wanlin Heaven, he helps restrain an opponent during the contest over treasures, but his former eagerness has vanished. Having investigated his predicament, he wants no renewed fight with Zhouwei. He remains involved in the later northern campaign, standing beside Helian Wujiang while the confrontation over Moongaze Lake develops. Murong is chilled by Yang Ruiyi’s unprecedented threat on behalf of the Underworld judiciary. He suspects that the matter of True Essence has considerably raised the Yang Family’s standing. (Chapters 1588–1589 and 1707)

Appearance and personality

His usual form is short and stout, with a plump face and coarse, loose skin. During battle he reveals a lean, imposing form with jade-like muscles, while another transformation produces a female figure beneath his outer skin. He is coarse in banter, ruthless in attack and increasingly wary when political arrangements threaten his own life. (Chapters 1502–1505 and 1589)

Abilities and cultivation

Murong cultivates Valley Water at Purple Mansion. Dawnless Deceit interferes with an opponent’s timing and grows more effective as he controls the rhythm of combat. His transformations let him swallow incoming radiance, return it as fiery streams, shed an outer skin and reveal another fighting form. Valley Water power can linger inside a struck opponent even after demonic qi is removed. These methods do not guarantee victory over Bright Yang’s increasing power; he deliberately ends his first test before either side commits fully. The Rebirth Spring is described as approaching completion, rather than as an accomplished new attainment. (Chapters 1503–1505)
