Cui Changfu
Cui Changfu is the leading elder of the Chongzhou Cui branch. His efforts to shelter a depleted lineage initially keep him distant from the Lis, but his own breakthrough and Li Zhouwei’s visit bring their shared imperial inheritance into a new relationship. (Chapters 732–733, 1669–1672)
Biography
Preservation under stronger patrons
As a late Foundation elder, Changfu receives Qinghong cautiously, examining the ancient bottle at her waist while fearing that someone might exploit the Cui branch’s old ties to Wei’s Li. He provides information about the two Radiance Profound Essence portions his family once possessed but firmly refuses to share the ancestral techniques she requests. Privately, he explains the refusal through the cost of earlier loyalty: Cui ancestors who crossed the sea to support a Wei claimant were executed and displayed for years. Preserving their remaining lineage, rather than following another uncertain imperial bloodline into disaster, is his governing priority. (Chapters 732–733)
Changfu enters breakthrough seclusion prepared to die, then joyfully emerges into Purple Mansion—only to find Zhouwei already seated in the family hall. The meeting exposes the branch’s dependence on Yangya, who has stripped it of techniques, materials, and talented descendants while disclaiming responsibility for its safety. With divine ability of his own, Changfu voices the resentment he previously endured in silence. He answers Zhouwei’s difficult questions about imperial history and old Dao conflicts, then offers the remaining inheritances under an arrangement he sees as a path to survival. Zhouwei returns value through pills and a usable Purple Mansion cultivation art, and Changfu promises that Jueyin, one of their most hopeful juniors, will receive a share of the support. His former refusal becomes cooperation under circumstances that offer his branch a more credible future. (Chapters 1669–1672)
Appearance and personality
Changfu is a tall elder with white whiskers, an imposing manner, and a light blue robe. His composure conceals accumulated resentment and fear of entanglement. Breakthrough brings tears of relief, while the chance to strengthen his juniors reveals that his caution is rooted in responsibility for the family rather than simple unwillingness to help. (Chapters 732–733, 1669, 1672)
Abilities and cultivation
Divine ability and inheritance knowledge
Changfu advances from late Foundation Establishment to Purple Mansion and enters the great void on emergence from seclusion. His breakthrough does not establish mastery of every art held by the family: he explicitly explains that the Art of Perfecting the Sleeve Estate has defeated generations of Cui Purple Mansion cultivators. His practical knowledge is broader than his demonstrated combat record, including artifact inscriptions, qi resources, imperial history, and the restrictions attached to old inheritances. Zhouwei identifies the Upper Venerating Jade Talisman as a degenerated spirit embryo that Changfu can refine over decades, correcting the family’s belief that it is an ordinary Foundation artifact. He also supplies the Mountain-Supervising Spirit-Pointing Talisman, suited to Chongzhou’s rivers and landmasses, as payment for two inheritances. These resources and the Heavenly Lustrous Gold Sutra improve the branch’s prospects, but receipt is distinct from completing further divine abilities or the promised refinement. (Chapters 732–733, 1669–1672)
Relationships
- Li Qinghong: Earlier visitor whom he assists with information but refuses an inheritance exchange.
- Li Zhouwei: Later visitor who negotiates renewed ties and supplies cultivation resources.
- Cui Jueyin: Talented junior whose training and future Changfu values. (Chapters 732–733, 1669–1672)
Items
Changfu examines and returns Qinghong’s Profound Patterned Bottle, reading its Wei inscription without claiming it. He later presents three inheritance slips and the Upper Venerating Jade Talisman. Zhouwei returns that talisman after identifying its spirit-embryo nature, and gives three Bright Yang pills, the Heavenly Lustrous Gold Sutra, and the Mountain-Supervising Spirit-Pointing Talisman. One pill is reserved for Jueyin’s hoped-for breakthrough; receiving it does not establish that he has attained Purple Mansion. The family’s ancient sleeve-estate manuscript is an inheritance held in custody, not a technique Changfu has mastered. (Chapters 732, 1672)
