Soul Swapper

The Soul Swapper is a smoky, mirror-like Space Wonder that moves, combines, separates, or destroys souls. It is a device rather than a member of the Soul Swap Twins: Jill Emmerson and Warren Emmerson are qualified users whose identities remain tied to their souls even when they occupy borrowed bodies.

History

Modo's covert weapon

The Modo Civilization keeps the Soul Swapper in storage and allows the imprisoned Soul Swap Twins to touch it only during controlled missions. Modo deploys them to the Shattered Star Ring, first using the treasure to place prepared souls into Black Star Army personnel and then to insert multiple parasitic souls into Aesop. The operation demonstrates how the device can create infiltrators who retain access to a body's recent memories and can affect a target without obvious physical signs. When their handlers order them to surrender the mirror, Jill and Warren instead remove the surrounding soldiers' souls, absorb the treasure into their shadowed bodies, and escape Modo's custody. The twins' escape and a new custodian

Jill and Warren use the Soul Swapper to abandon their original shells, move between other bodies, and search for a way to remove the mind traps placed in their souls. Their changing bodies do not change who they are: their souls remain Grade B, while their bodily class and strength come from the occupied shells. Manison and Han Xiao independently hunt the treasure, and Han's side captures the twins on Planet Earth Ring. Han cannot activate the mirror, but Feidin is unexpectedly recognized as a qualified user. After Ames kills Jill and Warren, Han entrusts the Soul Swapper to Feidin, ending the twins' possession without treating their borrowed bodies or souls as parts of the item. (Chapters 1160–1169)

Feidin's use and the Soul Terminal

Han temporarily borrows the treasure for experiments, learns that its ancient precursor was an artificial device, and returns it to Feidin. Feidin uses it to plant infiltrators in the Modo expeditionary army, separate Feidin and Chen Xing into different bodies, and perform other controlled soul transfers. Much later, the Soul Swapper resonates with Feidin's psychic power and guides him to the Soul Terminal, where it filters remnant thoughts from soul energy and helps him advance beyond Grade A. With Feidin's improved strength, the device becomes a strategic weapon: it destroys the souls of World Tree crews across a broad area and remains in his hands during the final offensive. Abilities and properties

• Appears as a smoky crystal or dark mirror roughly fifty centimeters across and three centimeters thick. Its present material is unknown, although an ancient artificial precursor is shown before its transformation into a Space Wonder. (Chapters 1157, 1169, and 1172)
• Transfers souls between bodies while greatly reducing rejection. A new occupant can consult memories retained by the body's brain, but those memories must be sorted and are not automatically part of the incoming soul. (Chapter 1157)
• Can exchange more than two souls, place several souls in one body, empty a body entirely, separate coexisting souls, or put a soul into a prepared empty shell. Success depends on the user and the target. (Chapters 1157–1158 and 1172)
• Recognizes only specially qualified souls. Qualification does not follow the user's current body, and using the device does not transfer an innate Esper ability with the soul. (Chapters 1159–1160 and 1169)
• Works on living souls rather than machinery, has a finite range, and can destroy World Tree-bound souls that it cannot transfer out of their connection. (Chapters 1157 and 1403–1405)
• Can inspect soul conditions and, after resonating with Feidin, filter remnant thoughts from soul energy. It does not simply purify every soul or remove all mind traps without sufficient power and preparation. (Chapters 1160 and 1378–1380)
