John

John is an experienced assassin who reaches the Midnight Inn while imprisoned and with his cultivation sealed. He turns his knowledge into the Battle Ax technique-design service, loses the cultivation granted by his Assassination System, and eventually chooses to remove that damaged system and rebuild a path of his own.

Biography

Refuge, work, and reluctant belonging

John enters the Inn through a golden door that opens inside his prison cell. Years of captivity and sealed cultivation leave him unable to challenge the Innkeeper, so he prioritizes safety and offers what confinement has not taken: the ability to design cultivation techniques around another person's needs. That bargain becomes Battle Ax, giving him income, a defensible place to recover, and a role in which the knowledge accumulated during an assassin's life can serve people instead of merely killing them. (Chapters 79, 84–90, and 102)

The Mystery Trial unsettles the dependence underlying his apparent self-sufficiency. Its target repeatedly defeats every plan supplied by his Assassination System, while John's own instincts make genuine progress. He begins to suspect that the system can be observed or influenced from outside, yet stays because the Inn offers a freedom and security he has not known for years. His attachment becomes clearest after Harry is struck by an immortal: John responds not as a detached contractor but as a furious protector, using concealment and anatomical precision to disable the attackers and preserve the people around him. (Chapters 89–90, 177–178, 408–409, and 434)

Loss of the system and an independent path

A system hunter forces John into a prolonged death match by exploiting the predictability of system-generated assassination plans. John again relies on his own methods, but victory comes with his system broken, his core emptied, his soul cracked, and all system-granted cultivation gone. The loss attacks his identity as much as his strength: having allowed the system to determine his profession and growth since youth, he struggles to imagine a life in which progress does not arrive through its rewards. (Chapters 618–622, 660–661, and 722–744)

Lex eventually pushes John to use his knowledge without waiting for the system, assigning him to study Pel Jr.'s dragon body. Watching Lex cultivate convinces John that dependence is a choice he can end, so he voluntarily asks for the damaged system to be cut from his soul despite the pain and risk. With help from Charles and the Temple of Fasting, he rebuilds cultivation from scratch, joins Nightshade, and turns his old tradecraft toward locating other system users for the Inn. By the latest period he remains outside during the lockdown, using contingency channels and a secret system-user market to continue that mission rather than retreating into his earlier isolation. (Chapters 987–1015, 1073, 1153, 1509–1591, and 2163–2164)

Appearance and personality

John presents as an ordinary middle-aged man, an appearance suited to someone practiced at avoiding notice. His friendliness and patience make the alias feel unremarkable, but Lex immediately suspects that neither the name nor the harmless manner reveals the whole person. Even with cultivation sealed, his physical durability, controlled movements, and habit of evaluating exits and threats expose long experience beneath the genial surface. (Chapters 84–90, 106, and 177–178)

He is cautious, private, proud of his expertise, and more compassionate than his profession suggests. John initially calculates relationships as risks, yet forms attachments to Harry and the Inn's workers strongly enough to delay his own plans and retaliate when they are harmed. Losing his system leaves him fearful and despondent, but choosing removal shows a willingness to accept uncertainty rather than remain controlled by the structure that once empowered him. (Chapters 130–139, 408–434, 722–744, and 987–1015)

Abilities and cultivation

Assassination and concealment

John's specialty is killing through preparation, hidden approach, and exploitation of weaknesses rather than direct contests of force. With system access restored inside the Mystery Trial, he can enter a void parallel to ordinary space and emerge near a target, while his covert senses and planning support infiltration. Against the Gilati he hides his actions so completely that nearby observers fail to notice bones erupting through the attackers' bodies. These methods remain dependent on information and surprise; a system hunter who anticipates system-generated plans can counter them, forcing John to improvise from personal experience. (Chapters 89–90, 177–178, 408–409, and 618–622)

Technique design and analysis

Battle Ax is built on John's ability to observe another person's cultivation, understand the function they need, and construct a compatible technique. He designs concealment, detection, combat, and cultivation methods for clients and supplies Lex with broader technical references. After losing the system, that knowledge survives: he studies a Heavenly-Immortal dragon body, works with Charles on a new cultivation plan, and begins dissecting techniques deeply enough to consider creating his own path rather than consuming system rewards. (Chapters 85–86, 102, 139, 156, 199–201, 988–994, 1073, and 1774)

Cultivation, tenets, and rebuilding

John's former Earth-Immortal cultivation was granted by the Assassination System and is already sealed when he appears. Damage to the system later removes it entirely, leaving an empty core and a wounded soul; cutting the system out ends the dependency but inflicts another controlled soul wound that Lex immediately treats. John subsequently resumes cultivation through an ordinary technique and Temple guidance. His old tenets remain embedded deeply enough that they would return if he reaches Earth Immortal again, but his latest realm is not named and must not be assumed to have recovered that threshold. (Chapters 89, 722–744, 1015, 1224, 1509–1541, and 1589)

Cultivation sealedBy 89John arrives with his cultivation sealed. The Mystery Trial temporarily restores access inside the trial, but outside it his spiritual energy remains sealed.
System damaged; all cultivation lost722–744A system hunter damages John's system, immediately removing all system-granted cultivation. His core becomes empty, and precise cracks spread through his soul.
Assassination System removed from soul1015John voluntarily gives up the broken system. Lex cuts the fused system out of his soul and immediately begins healing both the surgical damage and the older system damage, leaving John without system-derived progression.
Cultivation restarted from scratchBy 1509; 1541John returns to cultivation through his own effort and Temple of Fasting guidance. The source says he has regained cultivation but does not provide a new formal realm; it also stresses that he is training back from scratch.
