Alice
Alice is a Bureau of Elite Development agent and Wind Mage who helps guide Karl through his unusual early growth, first as an evaluator and teacher and later as the Commander of his field team. Her mixture of experimental curiosity, battlefield judgment, and protective command makes her an important bridge between the Academy's training program and the realities faced by newly Awakened Elites.
Biography
Bureau Oversight and Beast Training
Alice enters Karl's life as one of the Bureau agents observing the treatments that accelerate his development. She and Daniel continue watching his Academy training because his Beast Master class is developing beyond the established curriculum, but Alice is unwilling to let caution turn the exercises into empty demonstrations. She challenges Rita to make the students defend moving targets under more realistic pressure, then takes operational control when the agents bring Karl south to seek possible new bonds. Her field knowledge and caution shape that mission: she chooses the search route, stops the party from carelessly approaching a Golden Dire Bear, and responds to the crisis caused by two new Beast Spaces forming together by securing high-energy food, arranging medical attention, and making Karl's recovery the immediate priority. Her approach is demanding, but its purpose is practical—discover what his class can do without treating his survival as expendable. (Chapters 71–89)
Back at the Academy, Alice turns observation into a structured development program for Karl's companions. She uses her barriers to measure their attacks, helps identify appropriate skills, and works with Rita and Daniel to test how Hawk, Rae, and Thor respond to training and drake-scale potions. Alice also imposes discretion around the origin of those resources while devising tests severe enough to reveal the beasts' real capabilities, including letting Rae dismantle an armoured training vehicle and layering barriers for Hawk to break. Those choices establish her as more than a monitor: she becomes a teacher willing to adapt Academy resources to a class for which no standard lesson plan exists, while her concern about long-term damage and controlled targets keeps the experimentation bounded by the students' safety. (Chapters 92–93 and 137–152)
Command in the Southern Operations
When Karl qualifies for extended deployment, Alice accepts responsibility as his Commander Rank group leader and helps select Tessa and Lotus to complement the team's attack and defence. She admits both professional curiosity and a belief in Colonel Valerie's judgment that Karl could become a national powerhouse, but that investment becomes a concrete duty once the group enters a badly managed southern operations zone. Alice assigns formations, shields allied soldiers, uses her Golem to reinforce the front, and restrains enemies with wind while coordinating with military captains rather than supplanting them. She also confronts failures of discipline directly: after racing to save a sleeping patrol from Ogres, she demands its leader account for the absent watch, and she supports the Church Guard's takeover when negligent command has left lower-ranked Elites exposed to Commander Rank threats. The deployment proves both her team's effectiveness and the cost of poor leadership, while Alice's decisions preserve soldiers who would otherwise have been overwhelmed. (Chapters 184–205)
The same assignment expands Alice's understanding of her own class. A rediscovered System Stone grants her a new wind skill that manifests as a tornado, and a Commander-grade wind potion later improves her mana-control ceiling and her sensitivity to wind magic. She remains realistic about her prospects, explaining that she was inducted into the early Elite program late and, at twenty-eight, expects her progress beyond low Commander Rank to be difficult. Even so, she continues taking the hardest protective role: in a rank-separated cavern trial, she maintains barriers for hours until archers must physically hold her upright within Thor's protective circle. That endurance earns the group time to survive and regroup, and shows that her command is grounded in accepting the same risks she assigns to others. (Chapters 207–221 and 236–242)
The Mountain Trial and a Lasting Legacy
During the anomalous mountain deployment, Alice cooperates with Prince Corbin despite the competing teams' uneasy start. She diverts her group to rescue the Spellblades from a mass of Yeti, orders a retreat when their encirclement becomes untenable, and then helps evaluate the hidden caverns rather than rushing into hazards for loot alone. Once the party is drawn through an Elven city and into a Naga-controlled trial, she keeps the lower-ranked members protected with Commander barriers, commits her Golem to Corbin's attack on the Naga leader, and pauses the team to recover after the fighting. The experience ends with Alice returning to Bureau duties arranging deployments rather than remaining in Karl's new independent party, a separation that reflects his promotion to Commander and her responsibility for the wider body of agents going to war. (Chapters 228–259)
Years later, Alice and Daniel remain remembered as the Bureau pair assigned to guide Karl, but their work has grown beyond that first student. Alice tells him that the proposed Lightning Cerro farm was actually established in his name, that it now supports a herd of more than one hundred, and that the methods he left behind helped create an entire force of senior Beast Rangers. By preserving and institutionalizing those techniques, Alice helps turn one extraordinary student's experiment into a durable training legacy. Her presence in the Academy's Teachers' Guild and invitation to Karl and Dana's wedding show that the former command relationship has endured as collegial respect even after his long absence. (Chapters 1201 and 1207)
Appearance and personality
Alice is a petite, dark-haired woman. She is generally cheerful and quick to laugh, including at the strange behaviour of Karl's beasts, but becomes direct and authoritative when safety or command discipline is at stake. Her curiosity drives her to propose unusually demanding tests, while her questions about lasting harm and her willingness to reject reckless plans show that experimentation does not override her duty of care. She is also candid about her own limits, whether assessing the quality of her barriers against a specialist's or discussing the difficulty of advancing further from Commander Rank. (Chapters 73, 76, 88, 152, 190, and 217)
Abilities and class
Alice is a Commander Rank Wind Mage whose magic combines battlefield control, direct attack, barriers, and a summoned Golem. Her spell set is versatile enough for both teaching and command, but the corpus distinguishes her wind specialization from the basic fire and water magic she also knows.
Wind Mage class and progression
Wind is Alice's primary element. She can hinder an Orc's movements with wind magic, cut targets with wind blades, and briefly summon a tornado after receiving a class skill from a System Stone. Although she can produce basic water and fire effects, she identifies herself specifically as a Wind Mage, and an enchanted Naga staff remains unusable to her despite her access to ordinary water magic, showing that general elemental familiarity does not grant compatibility with every aligned implement. A Commander-grade wind potion later increases both her maximum mana-control rate and the clarity with which she senses wind magic; the source establishes this immediate improvement, but not a later rank advancement beyond Commander. (Chapters 152, 193, 208, 217, 221, 247, and 248)
Golem and Tearing Wind
Alice summons a Golem strong enough to overpower lower-ranked Ogres and uses it as a mobile front-line guard for herself and less durable teammates. She can reinforce it with barriers and the spell Tearing Wind, combining a durable construct with an offensive wind effect rather than relying on the Golem's physical strikes alone. The casting pattern is clear enough that Rae learns to produce her own spider-shaped Golems after observing Alice, making Alice's magic an important model for the beasts' development. The construct is powerful but not fast: it sometimes arrives after Karl and the beasts have already forced a close engagement, so Alice uses formation planning and protection of the rear to compensate. (Chapters 190–193 and 219)
Barriers and battlefield spellcraft
Alice can raise single, layered, and group barriers, cast them onto soldiers' shields, and protect lower-ranked fighters against opponents whose attacks would otherwise be immediately fatal. She uses the same control in training, where successive layers provide a measurable test of a beast's attack output. Her barriers are useful rather than absolute: Alice acknowledges that defence is not her specialty, enemy skills can bypass or wear through them, and maintaining them through a prolonged trial exhausts her to the point that she cannot stand without assistance. She therefore combines barriers with wind restraint, her Golem, allied formations, and timely retreats instead of treating the spell as an invulnerable wall. (Chapters 85–93, 138, 152, 190, 193, 219, 242, and 246–247)
Relationships
- Karl: Alice begins as one of his Bureau evaluators, becomes his field commander, and later helps preserve his Beast Master methods as a national training program. Their relationship develops from supervised experimentation into professional trust. (Chapters 71–89, 184–259, and 1207)
- Daniel: Daniel is Alice's regular Bureau partner. They jointly observe and guide Karl, and years later are still identified together as the pair originally assigned to him. (Chapters 71–89 and 1207)
- Rita: Alice and Rita share responsibility for developing Karl but initially clash over training methods, with Alice favouring more realistic pressure and Rita emphasizing controlled instruction. Continued fieldwork turns that friction into an effective working partnership. (Chapters 73–75, 137–152, and 184–221)
- Rae: Alice tests Rae's growth, advocates challenging demonstrations of her strength, and provides the Golem example from which Rae learns her own summon. Rae later builds the elevated field base Alice accepts as the team's secure camp. (Chapters 86–87, 138–152, and 190–195)
- Thor: Alice studies and helps direct Thor's development, frequently entrusts him with the front line, and forms a strong bond with him during their deployments. His protective circle also lets her recover while maintaining barriers in the cavern trial. (Chapters 141–145, 184–221, and 242)
- Prince Corbin: Alice works alongside Corbin when their teams converge during the mountain anomaly. Despite differences in tactical temperament, they jointly assess hazards and combine their forces against the Naga trial. (Chapters 228–249)
