Stark Vertigon
Stark Vertigon is the reluctant young heir of the Vertigon family, an exceptionally advanced lineage mixedblood who grows from Gustav's admirer into a trusted friend and strategic partner.
Biography
The stolen emblem and unwanted succession
Stark is already famous within the Vertigons for reaching the two-headed lineage form far earlier than prior heirs, but he avoids meetings, training expectations, and the MBO despite being designated next head. The original family emblem disappears just as he reaches succession age, preventing the ceremony and deepening unrest around Madam Lilian's long acting rule. (Chapters 877–885)
His disinterest changes when Gustav Oslov arrives to investigate. Stark is an enthusiastic follower of Gustav's public rise, defuses relatives who belittle him, and volunteers to help. Although Gustav initially considers Stark a possible suspect because nobody clearly says the heir wants the office, their shared investigation reveals a young man less opposed to responsibility than alienated by its ceremony and family pressure. Fighting the Satori cult
Stark secretly follows Gustav with his See All eyes, then uses his status to redirect guards who might expose the investigation. His surveillance and two-headed flight help trace the conspirators, while his willingness to follow Gustav into the cult tower places him directly against family branch members trying to stop his succession. He offers surrender first and subdues opponents when they refuse. (Chapters 886–910)
Against the Beta-ranked cult master, Stark's unusual Echo-rank power is insufficient but not passive. He blinds one head, retrieves the Jiko Hakai Katana, and swings it to save Gustav even though the backlash destroys both arms. The master nearly abducts him, but Gustav recovers him at the portal and returns him to Viltru. Stark's risk repays part of the admiration between them and makes their bond reciprocal. Family head and IYSOP strategist
With the emblem recovered, Stark proceeds to inauguration and accepts the stressful role he once avoided. Fusion grants the three-headed form and an aura that reads as Alpha rank, though Stark privately tells Gustav he is not a true Alpha. At IYSOP he uses wealth and family resources to attend, then proposes exploiting Axiler's information market rather than merely arresting the trader. (Chapters 919–1250)
Stark negotiates with Axiler under a collector's persona, spreads false intelligence to rival planets, and investigates the Xionsis when Gustav suspects foul play. His See All vision can cross enormous distances and perceive hidden beings, but the Xionsis quarters contain a darkness that annihilates light and defeats even his sight. He continues despite the risk because he believes he owes Gustav his life. (Chapters 1236–1299)
Visions, AGON, and the later alliance
An ancient pamphlet gives Stark visions of a future in which Gustav's Warp Demolator journey brings ashy destruction to Vertigon lands and leaves Stark dead. Acting to protect his family, Stark draws Gustav away and shares the memory rather than conceal his motive. Gustav objects to sacrificing the larger mission, but accepts cooperation after recognizing the choice resembles what either would do for loved ones. (Chapters 1455–1507)
Stark provides a ship and travels with Gustav to AGON, helping analyze its barrier and supporting his training while Miss Aimee remains absent. By their latest scenes, the former fan speaks to Gustav as a friend able to question plans, offer reassurance, and accompany him into a trial designed around the Outworldly. (Chapters 1507–1578)
Appearance and personality
Stark is a young man with dark braids. During inauguration he wears an elaborate gold-and-silver ceremonial outfit set with gems. His two-headed transformation is a sixteen-foot golden-scaled draconic body with two long necks, four horns, six eyes, and immense wings; the later emblem permits a three-headed form. He begins antisocial toward family ritual but is curious, humorous, and openly admiring around Gustav. Leadership makes him more strategic without erasing that warmth. Stark is protective enough to risk mutilation for a friend and manipulate events to save his family, yet he shares the troubling vision and accepts argument rather than treating family authority as absolute. Vertigon lineage transformation
The lineage advances through one-, two-, and three-headed draconic forms. Stark reaches two heads exceptionally young without the emblem, giving him golden scales, wings, claws, high durability, flight, and physical output far beyond an ordinary first-step Echo. The cult master's bite cannot fully sever his second neck, demonstrating the scales' resilience, although a Beta-ranked opponent still overwhelms him. (Chapters 885–914)
After fusion with the family emblem, Stark can use the three-headed form and produces an apparent Alpha signature. He explicitly says the emblem is fooling Gustav's senses and that he is not a true Alpha, so this is conditional lineage amplification rather than a naturally attained rank. See All
Stark can direct separate eyes toward distant locations simultaneously: one watches behind him, another more than fifty miles ahead, while others scan his immediate flight path. The ability sees through structures and detects concealed figures, letting him follow Gustav without entering ordinary perception and observe Aimee beyond a planet. (Chapters 886–891, 1237–1259)
See All is not omniscience. Environments where visibility itself is annihilated defeat it, and Stark warns that entering such darkness could cost him his sight. It gathers images rather than guaranteeing correct interpretation, so he still depends on Gustav and Aimee to act on what he sees. (Chapter 1259)
Emblem authority and combat judgment
The fused emblem strengthens the family head and secures succession, giving Stark institutional command over Vertigon guards and access to family wealth. In combat he prefers warning and disabling opponents, but will accept extreme personal cost when allies face death. His use of the Jiko Hakai Katana is equipment-derived: the weapon hurts an unqualified wielder so severely that his arms explode. (Chapters 909–919, 1220)
