Turning Lovis's talent into a succession claim

Duke Merula uses Lovis's rapid cultivation growth to argue that the younger Third Prince has greater potential than Raguel. He spreads that comparison among the nobility and helps generate an appeal to name Lovis crown prince. The appeal fails, but it strips Raguel of the existing title and reopens the succession contest, giving Merula House a credible path to influence the next reign. (Chapter 149)

The Duke's support remains political rather than ceremonial. Later discussion identifies Lovis as his grandson and the house's “hope,” explaining why observers consider an attack by Merula on Lovis implausible. The family connection and succession stake align, but the corpus does not show the Duke privately explaining whether affection, house power, or both motivate him. (Chapters 436 and 448)

Building and losing the three-house coalition

Duke Merula secretly allies with Duke Centho, who withdraws genuine support from Lucas and backs Lovis instead. Cyneheard expects Merula House to join the other houses in demanding justice and compensation from the weakened Fulvanius faction, but no direct retaliation by Duke Merula is narrated.
