Candice

Candice Waters was a celebrated Skyfall prodigy whose talent made her both the Royal Academy's public ideal and a potential pillar of the kingdom. Her confidence in hierarchy and strength was exposed as hypocrisy when Nux applied her own creed to her allies, defeated her publicly, and stripped away much of the status on which she relied.

The Academy's celebrated future pillar

Candice entered the story already surrounded by expectation. As a Marquess's daughter and one of the Academy's strongest students, she drew admiration at noble gatherings and marriage interest from the Imperial Family. Her father publicly left the choice of husband to her, and she rejected suitors politely at the first gathering shown. Her beauty, cultivation talent, and social position made other nobles treat her as a likely future pillar of Skyfall. (Chapter 15)

Her reputation rested on rare ability rather than rank alone. Candice possessed Exceptional Water affinity and reached the Master Stage in her early twenties, a record the Academy had not seen for two centuries. Candice's public ideal cracked when she encountered eight-year-old Royce being beaten and robbed by Oswald and two companions. She asked for proof, accepted the silence of frightened witnesses, and declined to punish the attackers. Instead she told Royce that the weak had no right to complain and should become strong enough to fight back. Defeat, blame, and loss of protection

The wager forced Candice to kneel, rub her nose on the ground, and apologize before the students who had once praised her. Arvina ended the humiliation after Candice fulfilled the condition, but also made the lesson explicit: talent and reputation did not mean there was no one better. The defeat cost Candice the unquestioned public image that had allowed her values to go unexamined. (Chapter 262)

Rather than accept the technical weaknesses the duel revealed, Candice blamed Arvina's narrow training. She approached Headmaster Eliyard, whose interest in her Exceptional affinity led him to accept her as a student.
