Sleipnir

Sleipnir is James's intelligent eight-legged horse and the mount that carries James, Lux, and later Aurora through the Abyss and between worlds. His extraordinary travel abilities make the rescue possible, while his exhaustion, blocked routes, and need for protection keep that mobility from being unlimited.

Biography

The rescue from the Abyss and the final war

James brings Sleipnir to Lux as the “Sleipnir Express,” and the horse immediately gallops into the sky and across a tunnel through time and space toward the Abyss. Once there, Sleipnir confirms that a sealed portal cannot be crossed, forcing the travelers to rely on Antero to reopen their route. He subsequently carries the search party across hostile layers, rescues Lux and Aurora during their escape, and accelerates hard enough to create shockwaves on the desperate return to the Thirteenth Floor (Chapters 1145, 1146, 1147, 1149, 1161, 1163).

The journey repeatedly exposes his limits. Five hours of continuous movement require rest, water, and hay, and days of travel leave him visibly tired even before James asks for maximum speed. Sleipnir can shrink so James can carry him beneath an invisibility covering, but thermal vision still detects the pair. After the Abyss mission, he remains James's inter-world transport, carrying the travelers from Hestia through outer space toward Elysium rather than retiring after one rescue (Chapters 1155, 1158, 1159, 1163, 1181).

Appearance and personality

Sleipnir is an eight-legged horse who can reduce himself to roughly one foot in height. He understands spoken questions, answers through neighs and head movements, and shows independent judgment: when James proposes disguising him as a Nightmare Horse, Sleipnir refuses and effectively tells his rider to worry about his own conspicuous appearance. That dry practicality distinguishes him as a sentient partner, not an unthinking vehicle (Chapters 1147, 1157, 1158).

Traversal and transformation abilities

Sleipnir can gallop through the sky, enter luminous passages across time and space, and travel between worlds at extreme speed. He senses whether planar gates are usable, changes size for concealment, and accelerates exponentially when James demands full speed. These techniques do not override sealed portals, eliminate body heat, or grant inexhaustible stamina; he needs food, water, rest, and defensive shielding from allies such as Leonidas when attacks threaten the party (Chapters 1146, 1147, 1155, 1158, 1159, 1162, 1163).

Relationships

  • James: Sleipnir's rider and closest partner, who reads his responses, cares for his condition, and relies on him for planar travel (Chapters 1145, 1157, 1163).
  • Lux and Aurora: Passengers whom Sleipnir carries through the Abyss and away from immediate danger (Chapters 1145, 1161, 1168).
  • Leonidas: An ally whose shields protect Sleipnir during the escape (Chapter 1162).
