James

James Von Ainsworth is an eyepatched multiversal traveler whose joking “old bandit” manner conceals overwhelming combat power and unrivaled access to roads between worlds. Sent by Max and Eriol, he guides Lux through the Abyss, assists the final war, and later connects Elysium to other worlds.

Biography

The Lionheart Tournament and the Hidden Domain

James does not physically enter the tournament story in this phase. Instead, Cai invokes him while tormenting Keane with an imagined lifetime of unwanted companionship, describing “an old bandit named James” as so shameless that even Cai feels inferior. The anecdote establishes his reputation long before his on-page arrival, but it provides no evidence that James attended the tournament or personally knew Keane; his first physical appearance remains much later. (Chapter 256)

Open Heaven’s Gate

James appears after Lux’s apparent death and return, identifying himself as the guide Max and Eriol sent to answer Lux’s need to reach the severed Abyss. He carries Lux on Sleipnir, crosses layers and blocked routes, kills Demigods with his silver spear, and alternates stealth with direct force as the pair searches for Aurora. Though he repeatedly calls the expedition a stroll, he accepts danger, detours for his grandchildren, and ultimately brings Lux and Aurora back toward Elysium. During the Elven battle he chooses to save fleeing civilians with Gungnir despite not wanting to join the war. (Chapters 1144–1147, 1155–1163, 1168, 1178, 1187)

After the war, James’s travel network becomes part of the peace. He establishes a still-unstable Bifrost connection between Elysium and Earth, links Heaven’s Gate to the Abyss’s Thirteenth Layer, and makes travel possible for Lux’s extended family. He then officiates Lux’s mass wedding and later presides over the Leaf Town couples’ ceremony. The final chapters leave him not as a conqueror but as a facilitator of reunion, marriage, and movement between formerly isolated worlds. (Chapters 1224, 1228, 1232, 1234)

Appearance and personality

James is an old man with white hair and an eyepatch. He can look entirely ordinary, although Lux immediately reads his devilish smile as that of a con artist; elsewhere he wears a white robe and wizard hat before replacing them with darker clothes, a hood, and a half-face demonic mask for disguise. He is playful, shameless, opportunistic, and fond of grandchildren, yet his tone turns cold when someone obstructs his route or threatens lives he can save. (Chapters 1144, 1146–1147, 1157, 1187)

Multiversal travel and combat abilities

James travels on Sleipnir across time, space, worlds, and the Abyss, and he alone can set fixed coordinates that let the Bifrost Bridge connect separate worlds. Once established, the bridge creates a road of light and supports repeat journeys, but the process is neither instant nor universally stable: a difficult detour can take a year, and the first Earth connection allows only a few travelers. Blocked local portals can still require outside permission, as Antero’s sealed Thirteenth Layer demonstrates. (Chapters 1146–1147, 1168, 1178, 1224)

His principal weapon is Gungnir, a silver spear stronger than Divine rank that always reaches its target regardless of flight or concealment. James kills Demigods before they can react and uses precise throws to protect Elven civilians at range. His eyepatch sees through walls, while an Invisibility Blanket suppresses his presence enough for infiltration. These tools have limits: thermal vision exposes the blanket, portal security can force open combat, and James still relies on Sleipnir’s speed and Lux’s diversions when moving through guarded layers. (Chapters 1146, 1155, 1158–1159, 1187)

Relationships

  • Lux: James answers Lux’s need for an impossible route, becomes his guide and combat partner in the Abyss, and later opens roads that reconnect Lux with Earth and his wider family. (Chapters 1144–1168, 1224)
  • Sleipnir: His eight-legged steed carries him between worlds, warns him about routes, alters size for infiltration, and acts as a trusted partner rather than an ordinary mount. (Chapters 1145–1158)
  • Aurora: James helps Lux recover Aurora and transports them out of the Abyss, including a family detour through his home world. (Chapters 1163–1168, 1178)
  • Maple and Cinnamon: His granddaughters’ birthdays are firm priorities even during multiversal travel, revealing the family attachment beneath his bandit persona. (Chapters 1147, 1167, 1178)
