Eriol
Eriol is the God of Games and Max’s closest divine collaborator in the Heaven’s Gate Project. He repairs Lux’s damaged reincarnation, gives him a path into Elysium, and quietly shapes the rules that protect mortal adventurers. Although divine restrictions usually keep him from fighting directly, he later risks his existence to prevent an Outer God’s law from erasing Lux and both worlds.
Biography
Awakening and Leaf Village
When Max’s failed launch leaves Lux’s soul stranded in an abandoned world, Max identifies Eriol as the only person capable of salvaging the project. Eriol finds Lux after another failed entrance trial, restores his memories in a private domain, and synchronizes the damaged soul with its Half-Elf body. He asks not for worship but for Lux to keep struggling to live, then negotiates with Vera rather than dismissing her fears. By lending Lux the Ring of Arondight, explaining the Soul Book and compendium, and establishing safeguards such as nonlethal consensual duels, Eriol turns a broken reincarnation into a viable journey while leaving Lux responsible for his own choices. (Chapters 4, 7, 11–12, 18, 43, 197)
Open Heaven’s Gate
After the battle with Daniel’s Outer God-backed attack leaves Eriol and Max grievously injured, the two sleep to recover. They awaken years later and meet Lux on Edea, thanking him for saving Solais and Elysium and accepting his refusal to ascend. Their final gift is personal rather than strategic: with Antero, they recover Gaap’s badly weakened soul, place it in a World Tree seed, and entrust it to Hereswith until it stabilizes. Once the reborn Gaap is secure, Eriol returns to the heavens, promising to watch Lux’s happiness from afar and leaving the Gates of Heaven open to him. (Chapter 1233)
Appearance and personality
Eriol usually manifests as a boy of roughly ten to twelve years old, with short dark-blue hair and gray eyes. His youthful body has no perceptible presence to an experienced warrior, while his eyes suggest an age and wisdom far beyond the disguise. He can float, form divine projections, and appear as light rather than maintain an ordinary mortal body. (Chapters 6, 12, 1105)
Playful teasing and careful restraint define Eriol’s manner. He jokes about souls, encourages Lux without choosing his statistics for him, and enjoys presenting difficult decisions as games. Beneath that levity, he is patient with Vera’s protectiveness and willing to pay a severe personal cost for mortals. His guidance consistently preserves agency: he provides tools, information, and safer rules, but expects Lux to decide how to use them. (Chapters 7, 11–12, 15–16, 1103–1105)
Divine abilities
Soul repair, memory restoration, and domains
Eriol can isolate a conversation inside a private domain, restore damaged memories with Divinity, read thoughts, and synchronize a mismatched soul and body. These acts cure the fainting caused by Lux’s failed reincarnation, but they do not make him automatically powerful; Lux must still train, allocate resources, and survive Elysium. Eriol’s work on Gaap is even less absolute: three divine beings can recover only a weak soul, which then needs two years inside a guarded World Tree seed to become stable. (Chapters 7–9, 12, 98, 1233)
Divine rulemaking and intervention
As God of Games, Eriol can establish world-level systems and safeguards, including the Soul Book framework, compendium-like guidance, and a law that prevents death in mutually accepted town duels. Direct combat is more restricted. He and Max may intervene only briefly when an Outer God attacks a mortal, and blocking Daniel’s attack leaves both seriously injured. Eriol bends the law of erasure so that memories of Lux—and the Abyssal gateways—are erased instead of Lux and Solais themselves, but the cost forces him into a long recovery and still leaves Lux’s soul missing. (Chapters 11, 18, 43, 1103–1106)
Divine transport and artifacts
Eriol can bypass Elysium’s rank-gated regions, lend artifacts that transport mortals between distant territories, and grant rewards suited to a candidate’s development. These tools are bounded by their own rules rather than unlimited teleportation: the Ring of Arondight takes Lux to one remote Beginner Area, and powerful gifts can remain unusable until their bearer reaches the required rank. Eriol therefore uses artifacts to open opportunities, not to remove the dangers attached to them. (Chapters 11–12, 197)
Relationships
- Lux: Eriol repairs Lux’s reincarnation, mentors his first steps, and later risks divine injury to preserve him. Their relationship develops from project overseer and candidate into genuine affection. (Chapters 7–16, 1103–1106, 1233)
- Vera: He respects Vera’s right to test whether Lux is ready and wins her cooperation through proof rather than divine coercion. (Chapters 12–16)
- Max: Max is Eriol’s best friend and partner in the Heaven’s Gate Project. Their greatest interventions—redirecting erasure and restoring Gaap—depend on their combined effort. (Chapters 4, 1103–1105, 1233)
- Gaap, Antero, and Hereswith: Eriol and Max work with Antero to retrieve Gaap’s soul, then rely on Hereswith to safeguard its slow rebirth. (Chapter 1233)
