Duanmu Yu

Duanmu Yu is a prince of Light Lens City and the master of its Bright Jade Palace. Already a peak High Level Heavenly Deity when he enters the search for Jiang Li's groom, he becomes Qin Yu's friendly rival, resolves the grief that had stalled his cultivation, and chooses friendship and honest withdrawal over political advantage.

Biography

Candidate Who Withdraws

Duanmu Yu enters the groom search as one of its most formidable candidates: he has power and influence comparable to Light Lens City's Sage Emperor, the backing to offer twenty cities as a betrothal gift, and a reputation for treating relatives and subordinates with unusual consideration. Beneath that nearly faultless public image, however, an earlier lover's rejection has left him unable to believe in love. He pursues the marriage chiefly because he hopes a decisive change will help him cross the barrier to the Godking stage, not because he claims an affection for Jiang Li that he does not feel. (Chapters 555–574)

During the first trial, Duanmu Yu travels beside Qin Yu, matches his flight, and attempts the Heaven Connecting Flight of Steps with him. He fails before Qin Yu reaches the summit, yet offers encouragement instead of resentment and later admires Qin Yu's success openly. Their companionship deepens when Duanmu Yu recounts how he devoted resources and care to his former lover, was abandoned, and refused her when she later returned. Qin Yu's perseverance forces him to confront whether his own resignation was wisdom or an unresolved wound, turning a formal rivalry into a friendship candid enough to expose the pain behind his composure. For the second trial, Duanmu Yu searches for the Mirage Spirit Mirror and describes pursuit of the greater path as his sole remaining desire. Inside the mirror mansion, he does not merely notice the artifact's illusions; he remains through their complete soul-tempering experience, reliving joy and grief until the emotional obstruction that has held him at the peak of the High Level Heavenly Deity stage finally loosens. His resulting comprehension completes the spatial laws and makes him a Godking. Yi Feng awards him the mirror because he alone endured the experience to its end, so the object he sought as a competitive gift instead becomes the means by which he no longer needs the competition. Godking status does not make Duanmu Yu treat Qin Yu as an inferior. He waits outside Qin Yu's residence rather than teleporting in, explains that memories can remain meaningful even when their happiness cannot be preserved, and recognizes that Qin Yu is the candidate genuinely willing to sacrifice for Jiang Li's happiness. He therefore gives Qin Yu the Mirage Spirit Mirror, formally withdraws from the groom search, and personally informs Jiang Fan. The choice turns his cultivation breakthrough into an act of self-determination: rather than replacing an old attachment with a politically useful marriage, he accepts the past and supports the friend whose motives he trusts. Friendship, Loss, and Light Lens City

Duanmu Yu later advises his father, Duanmu Yun, to keep Light Lens City out of the conflict surrounding Qin Yu and Jiang Li, though Duanmu Yun feels bound by his prior commitment. After Qin Yu becomes a Godking, Duanmu Yu privately congratulates him and visits Purple Mystic Mansion. Even while impressed by Qin Yu's assembled power, he questions whether the mortals brought from the lower realms can truly live freely in the Divine Realm, showing that friendship does not prevent him from voicing a principled concern. (Chapters 611–633)

On Exalted Celestial Mountain, Duanmu Yu stays outside the contest for the seals, then watches the Blood Sea Queen kill his father. His grief is immediate, but he does not answer loss by joining every subsequent escalation. When the surviving powers rush to attack Fog City, he tells his aunt that he will not participate and returns to Light Lens City. After Qin Yu subdues Duanmu Rufeng and other hostile Godkings, Duanmu Yu becomes the only Godking actually residing in his sacred city and accepts responsibility for its affairs. His preserved friendship with Qin Yu consequently protects his aunt from the harsher term imposed on several captives and helps stabilize the diminished Light Lens City. (Chapters 655–672)

Appearance and personality

Duanmu Yu is an exceptionally handsome man with shoulder-length silver hair, bright eyes marked by melancholy, and white clothing that reinforces his cool, solitary appearance. When he smiles, that remoteness gives way to a notably warm impression. His outward grace is therefore not simply ornamental; it visually reflects the contrast between his courteous public bearing and the sorrow he carries from his failed relationship. He is courteous, introspective, and difficult to provoke into petty competition. He encourages unsuccessful candidates, accepts defeat without humiliation, treats Qin Yu as an equal after becoming a Godking, and withdraws once continuing would contradict his reasons for entering. His restraint is not indifference: he can speak bitterly about his former lover, grieves his father's murder, and questions Qin Yu when concern demands it. What changes is his willingness to let those emotions govern his choices. (Chapters 572–590, 611–633, 665–672)

Abilities and cultivation

Duanmu Yu's cultivation is rooted in the exceptional lineage and training resources of Light Lens City's divine family. The corpus presents him first as an ancient peak High Level Heavenly Deity and later as a newly ascended Godking whose strength rests on complete mastery of the Divine Realm's spatial laws.

High Level Heavenly Deity cultivation

Long before the groom search, Duanmu Yu had reached the peak of the High Level Heavenly Deity stage. He can fly beside Qin Yu at the front of the candidates, withstand the spatial pressure of the Heaven Connecting Flight of Steps into its upper reaches, and remain functional after the staircase throws him down. These feats demonstrate elite bodily endurance and spatial comprehension, but they also establish his former limit: effort alone does not let him complete the final spatial insight required of a Godking. Godking spatial authority

The Mirage Spirit Mirror does not grant Duanmu Yu power directly. Its soul-tempering experience lets him release the emotional concern obstructing his comprehension, after which he completes the spatial laws and fuses his presence with the surrounding space. He immediately demonstrates Godking authority by moving the gathered candidates from the ocean floor to the surface, calming the turbulent sea, and departing through teleportation. Later narration places him among the least advanced Godkings because he has not comprehended Time Acceleration; Duanmu Rufeng's command of that temporal law leaves her stronger, and Duanmu Yu recognizes that his power would add little to the final assault on Fog City. Leadership and judgment

As Bright Jade Palace Master, Duanmu Yu commands enough standing that his influence is compared with the Sage Emperor's and High Level Heavenly Deities seek service under him after his breakthrough. He also possesses broad knowledge of the sacred families, Exalted Celestials, and old Divine Realm conflicts. These are political and experiential competencies rather than supernatural techniques, but they make him an effective counselor and, by the end of the corpus, the resident Godking entrusted with Light Lens City's daily affairs. Relationships

• Qin Yu: Duanmu Yu begins as Qin Yu's strongest friendly rival, then becomes a confidant who respects his perseverance and recognizes the sincerity of his love for Jiang Li. Giving Qin Yu the Mirage Spirit Mirror materially advances Qin Yu's groom-search campaign, while their later friendship helps shield Light Lens City after the final conflict.
• Jiang Li: Duanmu Yu enters the groom search without pretending that political suitability is love. Once his own cultivation purpose is resolved, he withdraws and supports the candidate he believes can make Jiang Li happy.
• Duanmu Yun: Duanmu Yun is Duanmu Yu's father and the Sage Emperor of Light Lens City. Duanmu Yu counsels him against confronting Qin Yu and is devastated when the Blood Sea Queen kills him.
• Duanmu Rufeng: His aunt succeeds Duanmu Yun as Sage Emperor. Duanmu Yu declines to join her final march on Fog City, later receives responsibility for Light Lens City while she serves Qin Yu, and understands that his friendship helped reduce her punishment.
• Yi Feng: Yi Feng's Mirage Spirit Mirror gives Duanmu Yu the experience needed to resolve his long-standing emotional obstruction. Duanmu Yu credits him for the opportunity, while Yi Feng insists that the final breakthrough was Duanmu Yu's own achievement.
