Yumar
Yumar is a one-armed hobgoblin actor in the Dog Sound Theater Company. Formerly the gifted leader of a village drug organization, he loses his arm when his own companions betray him and eventually discovers a new vocation onstage. His aura and movement form one part of the company’s coordinated Dance Plays.
Biography
From village boss to ensemble actor
Yumar turns a village drug business into a large organization through memory, numerical skill, leadership, and strict production control. When he realizes its growth will provoke the Fire River Council, he tries to close it, but his childhood friends seize him, force him to surrender the formula, and cut off an arm before expelling him. The organization is destroyed less than a year later, leaving Yumar to blame his own success for the deaths. A theater owner takes him in from the streets; after ten years he has come to enjoy acting, and Kim Gong-ja uses those painful memories to teach him more truthful aura performance. (Chapters 185–186)
Yumar joins Arika and Sakum in producing three interlocking melodies through their footsteps, helping make the company’s silent performance convincing enough to trigger reports of real murder and arson. The new style wins an audience and eventually functions without Gong-ja’s direction, with Yumar supporting Ssonia’s independent debut and staying through the company’s decline. He sends most of his acting income to his home village, keeping it afloat after the destruction of so many young inhabitants until another generation can grow up. (Chapters 186–188, 192, 194)
Appearance and personality
Yumar is a one-armed hobgoblin whose body is covered by a white tattoo ending at his right shoulder. For the Dance Play he also appears bare-bodied except for a waist cloth and the troupe’s painted stage markings. (Chapters 185–186)
He is intelligent, numerate, pragmatic, and burdened by guilt he tries to conceal with bitterness. Yumar recognizes danger before his companions do, remembers operational details years later, and is especially nervous when powerful council members attend the show. His later donations reveal continued responsibility toward the village whose losses he associates with his former leadership. (Chapters 186, 194)
Abilities and skills
Yumar has strong organizational instincts, a detailed memory, and a proven ability to coordinate people and production. Those talents once made him a successful criminal leader; in the theater, they support disciplined rehearsal and ensemble work rather than a renewed command structure. (Chapter 186)
As a Dance Play performer, Yumar uses movement and aura to create an assigned melody with his footsteps. His line overlaps with Arika’s and Sakum’s to form music, and he later sustains the choreography without Gong-ja correcting the performance. The corpus notes that he lacked exceptional aura talent in his earlier life, so his stage ability is the product of training, memory, and coordination rather than overwhelming power. (Chapters 186–187, 192)
