Arika
Arika is a one-eyed hobgoblin actor in the Dog Sound Theater Company. His unstable childhood and unresolved encounter with his estranged mother become the emotional material through which he learns aura-based performance, allowing him to help establish the company’s Dance Play style alongside Ssonia, Yumar, and Sakum.
Biography
Turning an unsettled childhood into performance
Arika grows up moving between villas and inns as his gambler father repeatedly wins and loses their money. When his mother, absent since he was three, visits one of those rooms, he fails to recognize her and closes the door; afterward, he remains troubled by her formal address and his own annoyed expression. Kim Gong-ja teaches Arika to recall such specific disappointment and bodily sensation as the trigger for aura. Arika then runs across the stage with long strides that produce a distinct melody, joining Yumar and Sakum in an ensemble vivid enough for spectators to mistake the performance for actual violence and fire. (Chapters 185–187)
The resulting attention gives Arika the recognition his struggling company had lacked. He continues training until the actors can perform their choreography and music without Gong-ja’s support, and he remains beside Ssonia after the company’s novelty fades and reviews worsen. Later, Arika’s mother returns again. They cannot recover the childhood they lost, but he allows her into his life and occasionally shares meals with her, turning the old closed door into a limited, deliberate relationship. (Chapters 188, 192, 194)
Appearance and personality
Arika is a one-eyed hobgoblin with a bare, muscular body suited to the goblin stage tradition. During Dance Plays he wears a waist cloth and a painted black tattoo, and his long stride gives his movement a visibly athletic quality. (Chapters 185–186)
He is observant, self-conscious, and capable of both harsh outbursts and quiet regret. Before performances he checks his makeup carefully and recognizes that visiting actors have come to see Ssonia rather than the company as a whole. His anger at an interrupted show reflects new pride in the ensemble, while his later willingness to meet his mother shows cautious growth without pretending their lost years can be restored. (Chapters 185–186, 188, 194)
Abilities and skills
Arika uses embodied memory to call up aura for acting. His footsteps produce a melody, and he coordinates its rhythm with those of Yumar and Sakum so three separate lines become one piece of stage music. He also learns choreography and can perform without Gong-ja filling gaps in the ensemble. (Chapters 185–187, 192)
His skill is collective rather than a stand-alone combat power. The Dance Play depends on rehearsal, synchronized movement, and each actor sustaining an assigned part; Arika’s contribution helps create extraordinary immersion, but the corpus does not establish him as an elite fighter or independent aura master. (Chapters 186–188, 192)
