Sakum

Sakum is a one-eared hobgoblin actor in the Dog Sound Theater Company. Once an attendant whose master mutilated him for overhearing an affair, he brings that injury and resentment into an aura-based performance style developed with Ssonia, Arika, and Yumar.

Biography

From mutilated attendant to stage performer

Sakum formerly serves a prestigious family. After he accidentally overhears his master sleeping with someone, the master cuts off one of Sakum’s ears, leaving him to recount the abuse with an expressionless manner. Kim Gong-ja asks Sakum and the other injured actors to draw on concrete memories rather than abstract will, then trains them for a silent Dance Play. Sakum runs onto the stage after Arika and Yumar, using aura in his steps to add a third distinct melody; the combined performance gives the neglected company an audience and a shared source of professional pride. (Chapters 186–188)

Sakum later performs the choreography and his assigned music without Gong-ja’s support, helping carry Ssonia through his independent debut. He stays with the company even after its reputation falls. When Sakum learns that his former master’s family has collapsed and the man has become a street beggar, he seeks him out, throws a silver coin at him, and leaves happily—reversing their positions without claiming reconciliation. (Chapters 192, 194)

Appearance and personality

Sakum is a one-eared hobgoblin. He is seen holding and sleeping with an old stuffed lion and, like the other Dance Play actors, performs nearly bare except for a waist cloth and painted body markings. His missing ear is a distinct injury from Arika’s lost eye and Yumar’s lost arm. (Chapter 186)

He is outwardly expressionless about his abuse but retains sharp resentment toward the person responsible. Sakum is also perceptive about the theater world, recognizing famous masked actors in the audience, and shares the troupe’s nervousness before its breakthrough show. His later treatment of his former master is vindictive but controlled: he chooses symbolic humiliation and then walks away. (Chapters 186, 194)

Abilities and skills

Sakum learns to use specific memories and physical movement as triggers for aura. His footsteps produce their own melody, which combines with Arika’s and Yumar’s lines to create music during the company’s silent performance. He later maintains his portion of the choreography without Gong-ja directing from within the ensemble. (Chapters 186–187, 192)

His demonstrated ability is theatrical and collaborative. The performance’s force comes from synchronized aura, movement, and immersion across the troupe; no independent combat technique, exceptional rank, or broader supernatural power is established for Sakum. (Chapters 186–188, 192)
