Ssonia
Ssonia is an elf who leaves his wealthy family to pursue acting in a goblin theatrical culture that dismisses him for lacking muscles. He allows Kim Gong-ja to possess his body and establish an unprecedented career, then rejects comfortable retirement and learns to perform for himself. His life helps make Fire Plays a path by which elves can enter the Fire River Council.
Biography
From borrowed success to a life onstage
Ssonia leaves home with a cart of family debt because he would rather accept a minor role than abandon acting, yet major companies refuse even to interview an elf. After the impoverished Mud and Dust company gives him a chance, he consents to Gong-ja’s possession in exchange for help debuting. Ssonia observes as Gong-ja uses his body to rebuild the company and create Dance Plays, but he recognizes that the fame and technique are borrowed. Faced with either retiring wealthy or risking public failure, he asks to reclaim his body and perform personally because he wants a life that feels beautiful rather than a reputation he did not earn. (Chapters 182–184, 189–192)
Gong-ja trains Ssonia, who debuts by combining dance, aura, and a solo aria while Arika, Yumar, and Sakum sustain the performance around him. After Gong-ja leaves, Ssonia’s aura seems weaker and the company receives harsh reviews, but he practices until his nails break and remains onstage throughout his life. He grows old able to regard that modest life as good. Centuries later, his devotion is remembered as a turning point: Fire Plays cease to be exclusively goblin, elves earn recognition in the Fire River Council, and the precedent contributes to a civilization that can admit later-arriving races. (Chapters 192, 194, 253, 255)
Appearance and personality
Ssonia is a delicate elf with blue eyes, pretty hands, and far less muscle than the hobgoblins who dominate Fire Plays. Old age fills his face with wrinkles, but his eyes remain clear after a lifetime onstage. (Chapters 182, 191, 194)
He is ambitious, theatrical, vain about the success he imagines, and willing to accept extreme help to reach the stage. That insecurity changes into resolve. Ssonia admits when borrowed fame frightens him, chooses the risk of acting in his own body, and becomes quiet and disciplined after Gong-ja’s departure. His later regret that he was not kinder gives his final satisfaction a reflective rather than triumphant tone. (Chapters 182, 189, 191–192, 194)
Abilities and skills
Ssonia has an elf’s natural affinity for aura, but Gong-ja initially performs through his body at a level Ssonia cannot reproduce. By closely observing that work and undergoing severe training, Ssonia learns Dance Play choreography, coordinated aura use, and enough vocal control to introduce a solo aria into the company’s silent style. His debut succeeds through preparation and ensemble support, not instant mastery. (Chapters 182, 191–192)
He later continues producing blood-flower performances despite criticism that his aura has declined from the standard Gong-ja set. His persistence, stage experience, and fusion of elven performance with a goblin tradition become more historically important than raw power: later observers credit his career with helping open Fire Plays and political recognition to elves. (Chapters 194, 253, 255)
