Iron
Iron is one of Jinwoo Sung's earliest named shadow soldiers and the army's first dedicated heavy tank. Raised from the White Tiger Guild hunter Chul Kim inside a Red Gate, he turns a hostile human's physical strength into a conspicuously loyal, often comic, form of protection.
Biography
Death inside the Red Gate
Chul Kim enters the Red Gate as the highest-ranked member of the training party and takes command of the stronger hunters. He abandons the lower-ranked group in the belief that they will only slow him down, but his own party is wiped out while Jinwoo keeps the supposedly weaker survivors alive. Humiliated, injured, and affected by the dungeon's cold, Chul returns blaming Jinwoo and attacks him from behind. Igris kills him before the blow can land (Chapters 16–17).
Jinwoo extracts Chul's shadow because the party still faces an ice-elf leader powerful enough to threaten the survivors. He refuses to keep the dead man's identity and derives the new name “Iron” from chul, meaning iron. The transformation is immediate: the resentful hunter becomes a kneeling knight whose first instinct is obedience to the person he tried to murder (Chapter 17).
Becoming the army's shield
Iron's first battle establishes his permanent role. His Epic Taunt forces the ice-elf leader to turn away from Jinwoo, while Reinforcement lets him withstand the concentrated counterattack. That controlled distraction gives Jinwoo and Igris openings to strike. When the fight ends, Iron celebrates with such physical enthusiasm that his new master has to manage him as much like an excitable subordinate as a weapon (Chapter 17).
During the Demon’s Castle campaign, Iron takes his place beside Igris at the head of the formation. Against Vulcan, his durability and threat-drawing skill offset the boss's size while the faster fighters exploit its exposed angles. He also begins copying Igris's habit of presenting defeated enemies' remains to Jinwoo, revealing that shadow extraction preserved a personality capable of imitation, rivalry, and a desire for praise rather than producing an interchangeable summon (Chapter 20).
Iron continues serving as a shock troop in the high-orc dungeon and other raids. His hammer and armored mass let him break formations at close range, while the army's mages and faster knights attack around him. Jinwoo increasingly deploys him where a visible, durable center will stabilize the rest of the force (Chapters 25–26).
Jeju Island and guard duty
On Jeju Island, Jinwoo needs to move the surviving Korean hunters without allowing the ant swarm to follow. Iron uses Epic Taunt against the massed ants, making himself the conspicuous target and buying the group room to withdraw while the shadow army counterattacks. The maneuver demonstrates the difference between simply enduring damage and deliberately controlling an enemy's attention for the benefit of allies (Chapter 36).
Iron later undertakes less glamorous protective work for Ahjin Guild. When assigned to guard people or hold a position, he communicates confidence by pounding his armored chest hard enough to echo through the dungeon. The display is excessive but sincere: he understands protection as a promise to meet danger head-on (Chapters 41, 43).
Inheritance and erasure
After Jinwoo fully inherits the Shadow Monarch's power, Iron joins the original named soldiers kneeling before the enormous army that arrives through the gate over Seoul. Although vastly older and stronger commanders now stand above him, his place remains secure among the companions who grew alongside Jinwoo (Chapter 67).
The Cup of Reincarnation creates a limit that regeneration cannot solve. The restored history begins before Chul Kim died, so a shadow made from his death cannot accompany Jinwoo into the dimensional gap. Iron and the other human-derived shadows grieve as their forms disappear; Igris consoles him before continuing the war. In the rewritten world, Chul lives as a large, talented student athlete with no memory of the knight who once served Jinwoo (Chapters 75–76).
Appearance and personality
Iron retains Chul Kim's exceptional size in a dark, heavily armored body built to occupy space on the front line. He normally carries a massive hammer and can manifest defensive equipment suited to his role. Black vapor and the shadow army's glow replace the ordinary signs of a living body (Chapters 17, 20).
His personality is far warmer than his living predecessor's final actions. Iron is eager for approval, quick to celebrate, and prone to theatrical gestures. He copies Igris, proudly reports success, and becomes visibly frustrated when an enemy resists his taunt. Those traits make him comic without making him incompetent: his enthusiasm is inseparable from a willingness to put himself between danger and the rest of the army (Chapters 17, 20, 36).
Abilities, skills, and rank
Physical abilities and equipment
Iron is extracted at knight grade from an A-rank tank, giving him exceptional strength, mass, and durability from the beginning. He swings a heavy hammer hard enough to batter large magic beasts and uses armor or a shield to absorb attacks that would interrupt lighter soldiers. His fighting style is direct by design: occupying the enemy's reach is part of how he protects the formation (Chapters 17, 20, 25).
Tank skills
- Epic Taunt: Iron broadcasts a magical provocation that compels affected enemies to focus on him. Jinwoo uses it against both a single boss and the ant swarm, showing that it can create a tactical opening at different scales. Strong targets can resist or frustrate the effect, so it is a control tool rather than absolute domination (Chapters 17, 36).
- Reinforcement: This defensive skill hardens Iron for the punishment his taunt draws. Its value lies in the pairing: attracting attacks would be suicidal without the durability to survive them (Chapter 17).
- Shadow regeneration: Ordinary bodily damage does not permanently kill Iron while Jinwoo has the mana to restore him. This makes him unusually suited to sacrificial blocking, though he still depends on the Shadow Monarch's reserves and authority (Chapters 20, 35–36).
Formation role and limitations
Iron is most effective as a vanguard, bodyguard, or controlled distraction. Igris and Jinwoo are technically sharper close-range combatants, while mages such as Fang provide greater reach. Iron's comparatively straightforward style can be read and evaded, and his emotional eagerness sometimes requires direction. Within a coordinated unit, however, those limitations matter less because his task is to make the enemy respond to him (Chapters 20, 26, 36).
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Knight-grade shadow tank | 17 | Jinwoo extracts Iron from the dead A-rank tank Chul Kim, converting that physical base into a regenerating heavy soldier with Epic Taunt and Reinforcement. |
| Erased by timeline overlap | 75–76 | The restored history contains a living Chul Kim, so the human-derived shadow loses the death that created him and disappears despite ordinary shadow regeneration. |
Relationships
- Jinwoo Sung: Jinwoo ends Chul's hostile identity, gives Iron a new name, and turns his strength toward protecting others. Iron responds with uncomplicated devotion and a constant desire for his master's approval.
- Igris: Igris kills Chul, then becomes Iron's model and fellow knight. Iron copies his trophy-giving behavior, fights beside him, and receives his consolation before erasure.
- Tank: Tank shares Iron's front-line durability. Together they give the army a physical screen for its faster and ranged units.
- Fang: Fang's large-area magic complements Iron's ability to gather or hold enemy attention.
- Greed: Both are shadows raised from hostile human hunters and both disappear because the reversed timeline restores their living originals.
Items
Iron uses a massive hammer, armor, and defensive gear manifested as part of his shadow combat form. None is identified as a separately named catalog artifact; their importance is functional, allowing him to hold the front line while the army maneuvers around him.
