Tank
Tank is the shadow of an enormous ice-bear pack leader defeated in the Red Gate. He develops from a newly extracted beast into a named knight-rank soldier, mount, and commander of Jinwoo Sung’s ice-bear unit.
Biography
Pack leader in the Red Gate
Tank first appears alive as the head of roughly thirty ice bears. He is a head taller and twice as broad through the shoulders as the other bears, and his arrival reverses their battle against Jinwoo’s early shadow army. A single blow destroys multiple infantry faster than they can regenerate, depleting Jinwoo’s mana and forcing the defeated shadows to withdraw. (Chapter 16)
Jinwoo answers by summoning Igris. The knight cuts Tank’s hamstring, claws, paw, and leg while evading his attacks, then decapitates him. Once their leader falls, the rest of the pack loses cohesion. Jinwoo successfully extracts Tank along with selected bears, preserving the pack structure inside the Shadow Army. At this stage the System identifies them only as shadow magic beasts rather than named soldiers. (Chapter 16)
Mount and emerging unit leader
Jinwoo next summons the former leader during his first sustained Demon’s Castle climb. Tank responds to simple handling like an exceptionally large trained animal, lowers himself so Jinwoo can mount, and carries him rapidly toward the floor’s teleportation circle. He clears lesser monsters and obstacles with a single paw. Jinwoo informally gives him the nickname “Tank,” although the System cannot yet register a bestowed name below knight rank. (Chapter 19)
When Jinwoo later divides 119 shadows into hunting teams, Tank leads a mixed group of shadow bears and high orcs. The groups commanded by Tank, Igris, Iron, and Fang survive while leaderless teams are repeatedly destroyed, showing that command organization materially improves the army’s effectiveness. Tank reaches level 28 quickly and openly celebrates when Jinwoo notices his progress. (Chapter 28)
Tank leads from the front against demon nobles, charging on four legs and rising to deliver a swift forepaw strike. The target evades and pierces a hole through his chest, exposing the gap between Tank and higher-rank intelligent demons. His shadow body can be restored, but the exchange confirms that size and aggression do not replace technique or sufficient rank. (Chapter 28)
Promotion and formal command
After continued fighting, Tank reaches the maximum level for elite rank and approaches Jinwoo with a dead demon in his mouth. He lies down with his forepaws extended and requests promotion through the System. Jinwoo grants permission, causing shadow hands to merge into his body and raising him from elite to knight rank. The new rank finally allows “Tank” to become his official bestowed name. Tank rises as tall as a house and roars in triumph. (Chapter 30)
As a knight, he charges beside Iron against the Demon Monarch’s summoned army. He later retains command of the ice bears as Jinwoo’s forces expand around stronger officers. In Japan he leads the veteran shadow soldiers in a pincer attack against the giants, and when Jinwoo assembles approximately 1,200 soldiers during the Monarch crisis, Tank remains the named head of his dedicated ice-bear unit. (Chapters 30, 51, 61)
Tank answers Jinwoo’s summons with the rest of the original shadow force when Ashborn’s much larger army arrives. The final corpus does not isolate his individual actions in the Dragon King war or identify a separate fate after time is rewritten, but he remains part of the established command roster at the last explicit assembly of Jinwoo’s original soldiers. (Chapter 67)
Appearance and personality
Tank is a gigantic bear-shaped shadow, twice the size of the other bears and as tall as a house on his hind legs. Black vapor rises from his body, making the shadow bears appear partly gaseous even though their paws and mass can deliver physical force. His living form is similarly distinguished by exceptional shoulders and height. (Chapters 16, 19, 30)
He communicates through body language and roars rather than speech. Tank lowers himself to carry Jinwoo, raises his head when praised, celebrates level gains, and formally prostrates himself to request promotion. These behaviors show eagerness for approval and a clear understanding of the army’s hierarchy. Jinwoo is not always certain what an individual roar means, but Tank’s actions are direct and consistent. (Chapters 19, 28, 30)
Tank is aggressive in battle but disciplined in command. He leads from the front and attacks immediately, yet keeps mixed units organized during independent operations. His loyalty is not portrayed as independent strategic judgment at the level of Igris or Beru; his role is that of a powerful beast officer who executes formations and rallies his own kind. (Chapters 28, 51, 61)
Abilities, skills, and rank
Physical combat
Tank’s primary weapons are his size, forepaws, claws, and momentum. Alive, he destroys early shadow infantry in one blow and advances faster than their regeneration can keep pace. As a shadow he runs quickly enough to serve as Jinwoo’s mount, knocks aside ordinary obstacles with a paw, and delivers a foreleg swipe with surprising agility for his bulk. (Chapters 16, 19, 28)
His enormous frame also makes him a natural shock unit. He can race into a summoned army beside Iron, take the front of a pincer attack, and intimidate weaker enemies simply by standing upright. The corpus does not give him magic, ranged attacks, speech, or weapon proficiency; his combat remains wholly physical. (Chapters 28, 30, 51)
Shadow traits and progression
As a shadow soldier, Tank does not die normally when pierced or crushed. Damage disperses his shadow body, which can regenerate using Jinwoo’s mana. This recovery is conditional rather than limitless: Jinwoo’s earliest fight with the living Tank shows that insufficient mana prevents soldiers from rebuilding, and repeated destruction in the Demon’s Castle exhausts the army’s shared resource. (Chapters 16, 28)
Tank gains experience through combat and advances from elite to knight rank after reaching his rank-specific maximum level. Promotion increases his power and authorizes a permanent bestowed name. His progression is faster than Igris’s because different ranks require different maximum levels, not because Tank surpasses the knight’s combat skill. Jinwoo explicitly regards Tank as below Igris, Iron, and elite-knight Fang before the promotion. (Chapters 28, 30)
Command role and limits
Tank leads ice bears and can maintain a mixed team of bears and high orcs during independent hunting. Units with named or recognizable leaders fare better than leaderless groups, making his presence useful even when stronger commanders are elsewhere. Later army formations continue assigning the entire ice-bear force to him. (Chapters 28, 51, 61)
His weaknesses are technique and relative rank. Igris defeats his living form through precise cuts despite Tank’s superior bulk, and a demon noble evades his widest swing before piercing his chest with a magic spear. He is strong enough to command ordinary beasts, but Jinwoo does not treat him as a marshal or as a match for the army’s elite humanoid officers. (Chapters 16, 28)
Relationships
- Jinwoo Sung: Jinwoo defeats and extracts Tank, uses him as a mount, recognizes his leadership, approves his advancement, and officially names him. Tank responds strongly to Jinwoo’s attention and presents himself for promotion with clear submission. (Chapters 16, 19, 28, 30)
- Igris: Igris kills Tank’s living form with superior swordsmanship. After extraction they serve the same master, but Igris remains the more technically accomplished and higher-ranking commander. (Chapters 16, 28, 30)
- Iron: Iron and Tank are large front-line members of the early Shadow Army. They charge the Demon Monarch’s force together, while Tank’s later promotion leaves Iron briefly disappointed that he alone among the early guard has not advanced. (Chapter 30)
- Fang: Fang commands high orcs while Tank commands ice bears. Both lead independent hunting teams, although Fang’s elite-knight rank and magic place him above Tank in the early hierarchy. (Chapters 28, 61)
Items
Tank does not carry equipment or a separately cataloged named item. His claws, forepaws, mass, and regenerating shadow body are his only demonstrated weapons. (Chapters 16, 19, 28)
