Igris

Igris is an ancient knight of the Shadow Monarch who becomes one of Jinwoo Sung’s first named shadow soldiers. Introduced as the guardian of the throne in Jinwoo’s job-change quest, he develops from a silent, power-restricted commander into a restored marshal, battlefield leader, and deeply loyal counselor whose service continues after the world is rewritten.

Biography

The knight before the empty throne

Jinwoo encounters Igris in a torchlit throne room at the end of the job-change dungeon. The armored commander blocks the path to the throne and moves with speed that seems incompatible with his heavy armor. Jinwoo estimates that the knight possesses at least eighty points of strength and agility comparable to a high-rank hunter. Igris can summon his displaced sword back to his hand without touching it, but the duel becomes a close physical struggle in which Jinwoo ultimately drives Kasaka’s Venom Fang into the knight’s throat (Chapter 12).

The victory is narrow enough that Jinwoo later wonders whether he could have survived if Igris had used his sword throughout the fight. Igris leaves behind the Crimson Knight’s Helmet and the rune stone for Ruler’s Hand, making his first defeat directly responsible for two important additions to Jinwoo’s arsenal. When the job-change quest awards Jinwoo the power to extract shadows, the defeated knight becomes one of the earliest elite soldiers added to the new army (Chapters 12–13).

First commander of a growing army

Igris quickly establishes himself as Jinwoo’s best soldier and most refined close-quarters fighter. Against the leader of the ice bears, he slides beneath a paw strike, severs the creature’s hamstring, dismantles its limbs with controlled cuts, and brings the severed head to Jinwoo like an offering. The display is graceful enough to make Jinwoo reconsider the danger of their original duel. It also establishes the ritual Igris repeats after later victories: kneeling before his master with trophies from the defeated enemy (Chapter 16).

In the Demon’s Castle, Igris and Iron flank Jinwoo as his two knights and lead the army through masses of demons and undead. Their contrast is immediate. Iron is loud and destructive; Igris kills efficiently, presents six demon heads with formal restraint, and inadvertently teaches Iron to imitate his habit of making offerings. When high orcs later confront the shadows, Igris kills with clean strokes so fast that his targets have no time to scream, while the infantry holds the line around him (Chapters 20, 25).

His importance is not confined to personal duels. Igris leads the knight unit as the army expands, carries out orders away from Jinwoo, and repeatedly serves as the stable point around which less disciplined shadows operate. He is the soldier Jinwoo summons when a threat requires judgment, speed, and controlled force rather than overwhelming area destruction (Chapters 20, 25, 31, 43).

A test against an S-rank swordswoman

When Haein Cha asks to prove herself against Jinwoo’s strongest summon, Jinwoo initially chooses Igris because Beru might revive her trauma and Fang’s fire could destroy the association gym. Igris emerges in black armor with a waist-length red mane, draws two swords, and then accepts the Demon Monarch’s Sword from Jinwoo. The weapon lets him launch lightning with a swing before closing to melee range (Chapter 39).

Haein nevertheless defeats him after an exhausting exchange, severing his left arm before Jinwoo stops the match. The loss shows both Igris’s level at this stage and the restrictions still holding him below his original strength: he can push one of Korea’s strongest hunters hard, but she remains the superior swordswoman during this period. Jinwoo accepts the result without diminishing his trust in Igris, and the knight continues as the army’s leading swordsman (Chapter 39).

Campaigns beneath sealed power

Igris’s equipment and rank improve as Jinwoo grows. With the Demon Monarch’s Sword, each swing can produce lightning powerful enough that Jinchul considers the knight beyond A rank and doubts he could defeat him alone. During Ahjin’s naga dungeon, Igris leads the knights while the larger army clears both monsters and extraction work, demonstrating that he can coordinate a specialized unit rather than merely follow a target-by-target command (Chapter 43).

He participates in the Japan campaign and later protects people important to Jinwoo. During Jinho Yoo’s rescue, Igris carries the critically injured vice guild master away on Kaisel under orders to find a hospital and secure treatment. The assignment is representative of Jinwoo’s confidence in him: a marshal-in-waiting can be trusted with a vulnerable human life as readily as with an enemy line (Chapter 56).

Although Igris grows through battle like the other shadows, his progress appears to stall before the full succession. Jinwoo actively tries to help him level during the wave of dungeon incidents, but the immediate test run advances Beru instead. The unexplained ceiling is later revealed to be an imposed restriction rather than Igris’s natural limit (Chapter 61).

Restoration as a marshal

When Jinwoo accepts the complete power of the Shadow Monarch, the restrictions on the commanders are removed. Igris is explicitly restored as a marshal, regains his voice, and returns to a level recognized by the Monarchs themselves. He catches and diverts a massive column of ice, responds to attacks even when ordinary combatants appear frozen in Jinwoo’s accelerated perception, and helps trap the Frost Monarch by cutting off its escape route (Chapter 65).

The Frost Monarch identifies him as Igris the Bloodred, the Death Knight, and one of the two wings of the original shadow army. That enemy assessment places his skill in its ancient context: he has fought across countless battlefields under the previous Monarch and is dangerous not only because he can return after destruction but because of the experience carried into each duel. A Monarch in full condition expects to defeat the marshals, yet their regeneration makes a prolonged fight costly and difficult (Chapter 65).

Igris then assumes command responsibilities on the scale his title implies. He leads a major division of the army, serves beside Grand Marshal Bellion, and joins Fang in isolating the Iron Body Monarch from communication while the shadow forces close a trap around him. He also kneels with Bellion and Beru to warn Jinwoo against entering the Dragon King’s army alone, showing that loyalty includes offering unwelcome strategic counsel when their master’s safety is at stake (Chapters 68, 71, 73).

War, doubt, and a renewed oath

Igris fights through the war with the Army of Destruction and remains behind Jinwoo with Bellion and Beru when the final army is assembled. After time reversal, he follows Jinwoo into the dimensional rift for the long second war. In his own recollection, the shadows train, fight the Monarchs, and oppose the ancient dragons while Jinwoo settles the conflict beyond human history (Chapter 76).

An ancient dragon, Granode, challenges Igris for serving a human successor rather than the previous Shadow Monarch. The accusation unsettles him because his life with the new master has become so complete that thoughts of the former ruler have faded. Jinwoo’s call breaks through the doubt. Igris chooses his present king not from magical compulsion alone, but because the campaigns and ordinary moments they shared have remade the center of his loyalty (Chapter 76).

Service in the peaceful world

In the rewritten world, Igris retains his memories and voice while most humans forget the hunter age. His duties broaden in unexpectedly domestic directions. He studies alongside school-age Jinwoo, offers answers with great confidence even when they are wrong, and worries more visibly about an examination than his master does. He later regrets that Jinchul cannot know the truth of the world Jinwoo saved but accepts Jinwoo’s decision not to restore painful memories selectively (Chapter 76).

Igris continues advising Jinwoo during his career and takes an interest in the education of Jinwoo and Haein’s son, Sooho. His argument with Bellion over whether the child should learn academics or swordsmanship shows how thoroughly a battlefield commander has adapted to family life without losing his formal intensity. The old oath survives, but its expression now includes schoolwork, childcare, and concern for the moral use of overwhelming power (Chapter 76).

Appearance and personality

As a living dungeon commander, Igris wears ornate bloodred armor and a helmet crowned with a long flowing mane. After extraction, his armor becomes pitch-black while the red mane remains an identifying feature. Darkness fills the helmet rather than a visible face, and his imposing knightly silhouette changes little as his rank grows. His restored form carries enough power that the Frost Monarch recognizes him immediately (Chapters 12–13, 39, 65).

Igris is formal to the point of ritual. He bows before orders, kneels when returning, and lays conquered heads at Jinwoo’s feet. Jinwoo sometimes finds this deference excessive, especially when Iron copies it, but Igris treats every assignment as service to a king. His restraint also shapes how he fights: where Iron crushes opponents noisily, Igris uses controlled, efficient cuts (Chapters 16, 20, 25).

Speech reveals a personality that silence had hidden rather than creating a new one. He is thoughtful, proud of honorable service, susceptible to doubt, and capable of dry impatience with Beru. He values education because he remembers graduating from knight school as a human, empathizes with Jinchul’s fear of being forgotten, and accepts correction without resentment. His seriousness becomes comic in peaceful settings, but it is never mere posturing; the same conscientiousness governs his duels, strategic warnings, and concern for Sooho (Chapter 76).

Abilities, skills, and rank

Swordsmanship and close combat

Igris is a highly technical swordsman whose effectiveness comes from timing and precision as much as raw power. He can dual-wield, change between swords and a waist dagger, evade through narrow openings, target tendons and joints, and decapitate opponents with economical strokes. His fight with the ice-bear leader shows systematic dismantling of a larger enemy, while his battle with Haein shows the stamina and technique to pressure an elite S-rank swordswoman even before his restoration (Chapters 16, 25, 39).

The Demon Monarch’s Sword extends his reach through lightning. A swing can launch a bolt, and later observers report lightning falling with repeated sword strokes. The weapon complements rather than replaces his melee skill; against Haein he uses the first bolt to force movement and immediately charges to continue the duel at close range (Chapters 39, 43).

Physical attributes and Ruler’s Hand

Before becoming a shadow, Igris moves in heavy armor with agility comparable to a high-rank hunter and enough strength to ignore the armor’s usual penalty. His restored marshal form possesses speed extraordinary even among the shadow commanders, allowing him to begin reacting inside Jinwoo’s vastly accelerated perception. He can catch and redirect a large ice attack with both hands and physically block a Monarch’s escape path (Chapters 12, 65).

Igris originally uses the ability later granted to Jinwoo as Ruler’s Hand, calling his sword across the room without contact. The rune stone dropped after his defeat teaches Jinwoo a no-mana version of that physical manipulation. The corpus demonstrates this telekinetic retrieval clearly but does not present a separate catalog of additional named Igris techniques (Chapters 12–13).

Shadow traits and rank progression

As a shadow soldier, Igris can be stored within Jinwoo’s shadow, summoned at range, communicate through the army’s bond, and regenerate from destruction while his master supplies the necessary power. This makes wounds that would end a living fighter—including Haein severing his arm—temporary. The same regeneration is a strategic problem even for a Monarch, because defeating him once does not remove him from a prolonged battle (Chapters 39, 65).

His visible progression runs from Jinwoo’s leading knight to a commander of the knight unit and finally a restored marshal. The system had sealed his original authority while Jinwoo developed; when those limits disappear, his combat power, voice, memory, and ancient battlefield identity become fully available. Bellion remains grand marshal, while Igris and Beru serve as the army’s principal marshals (Chapters 61, 65, 68).

Command and tactical judgment

Igris leads formations independently, prioritizes assigned objectives, and coordinates with other specialists. He commands the knights, helps divide the full army into balanced groups, works beside Fang to prevent enemy telepathy, and advises Jinwoo when a plan places the Monarch himself at unacceptable risk. He is best used as a duelist or field commander rather than as an area-destruction mage (Chapters 43, 68, 71, 73).

His limits are clearest before restoration. Haein can defeat the restricted Igris, and the Frost Monarch believes a Monarch at full strength should overpower both marshals despite their persistence. He also cannot act independently of Jinwoo’s survival: the army’s priority is protecting the master because the shadows’ continued existence ultimately depends on him (Chapters 39, 65, 71).

Power progression

Stage / Realm / AbilityChapter(s)Notes
Bloodred commander12Appears as the job-change dungeon's living armored boss, already possessing high-rank physical power, masterful swordsmanship, and telekinetic sword recall.
Knight-grade shadow14Jinwoo extracts him after receiving the Shadow Monarch class; his original power is restricted, but he gains shadow storage, loyalty, and mana-dependent regeneration.
Elite Knight rank30Combat growth promotes him from knight to elite knight, resetting his displayed level while raising him to Fang's rank.
Marshal restoration65Complete Shadow Monarch succession removes the System's seal, restoring Igris's ancient power, voice, memories, and marshal authority.

Relationships

  • Jinwoo Sung: Jinwoo first defeats and extracts Igris, then earns a loyalty that becomes personal as well as hierarchical. Igris accepts him as the true continuation of the Shadow Monarch and carries that service into the peaceful world (Chapters 12–13, 65, 76).
  • Beru: The two are fellow marshals and contrasting personalities. Beru is emotional and theatrical; Igris is controlled and corrective. They nevertheless kneel together, fight together, and share concern for their king (Chapters 65, 71, 76).
  • Bellion: Bellion outranks Igris as grand marshal and shares command of the restored army. Their later disagreement over Sooho’s education is competitive but grounded in mutual devotion to Jinwoo’s family (Chapters 68, 76).
  • Haein Cha: Haein defeats the restricted Igris during her Ahjin test, establishing a clear benchmark for both fighters at that stage. In the rewritten world, he becomes part of the hidden household surrounding her and Jinwoo (Chapters 39, 76).
  • Iron: Iron imitates Igris’s ritual offerings without matching his restraint. Their contrast gives Jinwoo two very different knight commanders during the army’s early growth (Chapter 20).

Items

The Demon Monarch’s Sword becomes Igris’s principal weapon after Jinwoo lends it to him for Haein’s test. Its lightning attacks remain associated with his later battlefield appearances (Chapters 39, 43).

Igris’s original defeat also produces the Crimson Knight’s Helmet and the Ruler’s Hand rune stone. Jinwoo acquires and uses both, so they are spoils from Igris rather than possessions he retains. His own shadow armor and ordinary blades are manifestations of his soldier form, not separately cataloged personal items (Chapters 12–13).
