Xuanyuan Shishi

Xuanyuan Shishi is the human-form sword spirit generated by Demortus, one of the four Banishing Blades. He first presents himself as a young mist Adept in the Great Adept Tournament, where his Ten Thousand Swords as One style defeats Constantine and reaches the final four before Lan Jue's Taiji overcomes him. The later revelation is more precise than simple ownership: Xuanyuan does not merely carry Demortus. His human persona is a spirit created by the blade and subject to its will. He ultimately bonds Demortus to Zhou Qianlin, teaches her and Lan Jue the Harmonious Swords, and helps prepare the Banishing Strategy used against the alien home worlds. Biography

The tournament's hidden swordsman

Xuanyuan enters the Great Adept Tournament with almost no public record. He appears twenty-six or twenty-seven, with short dark hair and a lively manner, and his early opponents vanish inside a mist before losing. The public therefore classifies mist as his Discipline, but the quarter-finals reveal that the mist is a field of innumerable swords. He defeats Ying Suifeng and advances into a confrontation with Constantine while maintaining friendly contact with the equally mysterious Jun Yongye. (Chapters 432 and 449–453)

Against Constantine, Xuanyuan disperses and recombines his mistblades, severs the links sustaining divine Faith, and uses Godslayer and Ten Thousand Blades as One to penetrate a stronger opponent's defenses. Constantine tries to wait for the supposedly inferior Adept to exhaust himself, but Xuanyuan's changing attacks accelerate and inflict internal sword-qi injuries until the High Inquisitor loses. The victory demonstrates technique overcoming a cultivation deficit; it does not establish that Xuanyuan has more raw Discipline than Constantine. (Chapters 458–460)

Lan Jue presents a different counter. His Forest of Lightning and Taiji deny Xuanyuan the speed and battlefield control his changing blades require. Taiji redirects the sword field and eventually spins both weapons and swordsman out of control. A flash of red sword spirit briefly reveals Xuanyuan's deeper nature before Lan Jue wins. Xuanyuan still receives a finalist's S-ranked gemstone when later tournament events prevent the planned match, but the award is not a separate inventory association in the current catalog. Demortus given a face

After the tournament, Xuanyuan and Jun Yongye transform into blue and red swords to escape the Northern authorities. The Pharmacist later explains that they are not ordinary Adepts who possess weapons: Jun Yongye is the current human-form spirit of Captus, while Xuanyuan is the corresponding spirit of Demortus. The Banishing Blades periodically generate souls, and those souls can assume human images while seeking suitable bearers. This makes Xuanyuan a person with speech, judgment, and relationships, but also a manifestation controlled by Demortus rather than the blade's independent owner. (Chapters 489 and 493–494)

Maintaining human form drains the spirits, and their current incarnations have roughly ten years to find bearers before fading. They entered the tournament to test candidates and selected Lan Jue and Qianlin because of strength, potential, character, and the couple's shared purpose. Xuanyuan judges Qianlin's loss of consciousness a serious risk, while accepting Lan Jue's refusal to endanger her merely for power. A compromise routes the painful joining through Lan Jue so that Xuanyuan can reach Qianlin's spirit without making her bear the physical ordeal directly. (Chapters 535–536)

Bond with Qianlin and sword instruction

Xuanyuan supervises Captus's joining with Lan Jue before beginning his own bond with Qianlin. He identifies the stabilizing value of thunder essence, promises to channel the danger through Lan Jue, and fractures his human image into countless penetrating forms as Demortus begins the process. Qianlin's adaptable Queen of Heaven Discipline accepts the contact unusually smoothly. By the end, Demortus is bound to Qianlin and Xuanyuan's voice and knowledge can operate through that union. (Chapters 545–554)

The bond does not grant immediate mastery. Xuanyuan and Jun Yongye take the pair into the swords' internal training realm and teach complementary methods: Demortus spreads force among myriad changing blades, while Captus concentrates it. Xuanyuan warns that the swords' powers must remain sealed until their bearers can command them without injuring each other. Qianlin's unconscious state does not prevent him from imparting technique, and her natural affinity eventually lets her swordsmanship progress faster than Lan Jue's. (Chapters 594–596 and 633)

As Qianlin recovers and both bearers approach Paragon, Xuanyuan continues to guide cultivation. The first full Harmonious Swords attack produces extraordinary force but drains Lan Jue and Qianlin almost completely. Later instruction teaches them to rely on intention and application rather than pouring all their energy into each strike, making the style stronger and more sustainable. Xuanyuan's contribution is therefore not only the blade's power but the restraint needed to survive using it. (Chapters 703, 716, 752–757, and 823)

Banishing Strategy and late status

Xuanyuan remains distinct from a dead human soul sealed in a sword. Chapter 877 contrasts him and Jun Yongye with Li Ke: Xuanyuan is generated by Demortus and shares the weapon's will, whereas Li Ke was once Ultus's master and preserved his human spirit inside it after death. Xuanyuan can advise and teach, but Demortus remains the controlling foundation of his existence. (Chapter 877)

Before the last confrontation, Xuanyuan, Jun Yongye, and Li Ke help the four bearers decide to surrender their bodies more completely to the Banishing Blades so the Strategy can draw on all their energy. The choice raises the chance of victory but makes failure fatal. In Chapter 898, as Qianlin and Demortus are being consumed by the Strategy, Xuanyuan is explicitly still present and silent beside her, focusing everything into the sword. Prayer slows that consumption. The corpus resolves the human victory and its principal survivors, but does not separately describe Xuanyuan taking human form afterward; his latest explicit state is active within the Qianlin–Demortus bond. Appearance and personality

In human form, Xuanyuan resembles a man in his mid-to-late twenties with short dark hair and a lively, youthful presence. He commonly wears simple white clothing and smiles in a relaxed, congenial way. During serious combat the smile disappears and his calm movement resembles rolling clouds, while his body can dissolve into mist, countless blades, or Demortus's blue sword form. (Chapters 449, 459, 489, and 535–545)

He is friendly, perceptive, proud of sword tradition, and sometimes mischievous in training. He encourages Lan Jue during the tournament, accepts defeat without Constantine's bitterness, and later turns Qianlin's first practice attack into a deliberately alarming lesson. His humor coexists with strict standards: a bearer must be powerful, true, distinctive, and willing to protect others, and the swords' seals remain until skill catches up with power. (Chapters 460–489, 536, 550, and 594–596)

Demortus and the Way of Changes

Xuanyuan's apparent mist Discipline is the human expression of Demortus's ever-changing nature. He can dissolve into mist, create innumerable sword copies, recombine them into a single blade or human form, attack from many angles, sever energetic connections, and let sword qi bypass conventional defenses. Techniques associated with him include Godslayer and Ten Thousand Blades as One. His adaptability excels against rigid power, as Constantine discovers. (Chapters 449–460)

The style is not without counters. Taiji can redirect its flows, broad lightning fields can restrict its speed, and an opponent with stronger cultivation can make control increasingly difficult. Xuanyuan also cannot freely command Demortus's full power before a bearer and deeper union are established. The blade is his source and master; his personified spirit does not independently own its limitless energy. (Chapters 474–476, 494, 536, and 877)

Bonding, instruction, and strategy

Xuanyuan can transmit sword knowledge, lead Qianlin's meditation, open an internal training realm with Captus, and regulate how much of Demortus's power its bearer accesses. He teaches the distributed half of the Harmonious Swords and later helps reduce its energy cost through better intention and technique. At the strategic level, he helps prepare the Banishing Strategy, but the final formation still requires all four blades, four Paragon bearers, and life-threatening energy. Relationships

• Zhou Qianlin: Xuanyuan selects Qianlin as Demortus's bearer, bonds with her through Lan Jue's protection, transfers sword knowledge to her, and remains active within their union through the final Strategy.
• Lan Jue: Tournament opponent, chosen co-bearer, and student of the Harmonious Swords. Lan Jue defeats Xuanyuan's human-form technique with Taiji, then earns his respect through strength, sacrifice, and refusal to risk Qianlin for personal gain.
• Jun Yongye: Fellow sword spirit and companion. Jun embodies Captus while Xuanyuan embodies Demortus; together they test candidates and teach the paired sword style, although their own spirits are not suited to the affection-based harmony required for its fullest use.
• Pharmacist: Sword-sister and bearer of Occisus. She recognizes Xuanyuan's tradition, explains his nature to Lan Jue, and helps supervise the bonding process.
• Constantine: Xuanyuan's decisive tournament opponent. His changing sword technique cuts through Constantine's Faith and defeats the stronger Discipline through superior application.
