Roan

Roan is the husband of Tyris, father of Telle, and a senior champion of the White Feather clan. Introduced as one of the Chained Isles' few Masters, his friendly practicality and care for frontier Awakened persist through Antarctica and his later Transcendence; by the latest chapters, however, he and Tyris have bowed to Asterion and act against Jet aboard the Night Garden. Biography

Master of the Chained Isles

Roan patrolled the Chained Isles from the Sanctuary of Noctis, riding a white griffin and protecting travelers from the region's lethal shifts. He met Sunny on an ascending island, warned him about the Crushing, endured it beside him, and offered future help without demanding allegiance or payment. When Sunny later reported Chain Worms and unusual relics, Roan took the information seriously, respected his ownership of what he found, and advised secrecy rather than using White Feather's authority to confiscate it. (Chapters 381–402 and 466–474)

His role joined local knowledge with clan responsibility. Roan knew the movements and weaknesses of Chained Isles creatures, maintained patrols, and supported Tyris's governance while letting her speak for herself. Although married into a Legacy clan rather than born to one, he was treated as one of the region's leading Masters and proved unusually approachable. He helped Sunny's cohort prepare to reach a Nightmare Seed, but did not accompany them into the Second Nightmare. (Chapters 402, 466–474, 513, and 554)

White Feather in Antarctica

After White Feather was punished for Tyris's defiance of Valor, Roan accompanied the clan to Antarctica. He helped receive Sunny's refugee convoy, coordinated the final passage into Falcon Scott, and used a lightning barrier to delay the pursuing horde. When the Devouring Cloud threatened the city, he and White Feather deliberately entered the swarm to lure it close, accepting severe wounds so the Irregulars could kill its Tyrants. His actions were grounded in duty to the refugees and to Tyris's battle plan rather than personal glory. (Chapters 979–980 and 1005–1007)

Roan's priorities became clearest after the Winter Beast defeated Tyris. Still badly injured from the Devouring Cloud operation, he remained at his unconscious wife's side, reported the disaster to Jet, and organized White Feather's withdrawal so its Saint could live. He believed the defense of Falcon Scott had become hopeless without Tyris, a judgment that sounded defeatist to Sunny but reflected both the Titan's power and Roan's responsibility to preserve his clan. Transcendence and the Domain War

Roan later conquered a Third Nightmare and became a Saint, giving White Feather two Transcendent champions and making the clan much harder for Valor to suppress. In Godgrave he served in the Sword Army's Citadel expedition, revealing a winged-lion Transformation rather than the griffin form others expected. During the ambush at Vanishing Lake he fought the Great Terror and Song's Saints, endured grievous wounds, and survived long enough for Nephis and Sunny to reverse the battle. (Chapters 1842, 1881–1905)

He continued fighting beside Tyris and Nephis, openly following Nephis when she defied Anvil's orders and later joining the march through the Hollows. On the final battlefield Roan stood with his wife, daughter, and clan, prepared for a clash that ended when Nephis's rebellion displaced both old Sovereigns. Roan survived the war and later remained a recognized Saint of the Human Domain. (Chapters 1994, 2082, 2210–2225, and 2783)

The Night Garden and Asterion

Years later, Roan and Tyris helped steer the Night Garden through the Sky Below. Jet initially suspected that their questions and behavior concealed outside pressure; her fears were confirmed when Asterion appeared on the bridge and Roan joined the other Saints in bowing to him. The corpus does not reveal when Roan became a subject, whether he submitted willingly, or how much independent thought he retained. (Chapters 2822–2824)

When Jet escaped, Roan and Tyris pursued her in their Transcendent forms. Roan's winged lion dove toward the falling Saint while Tyris's thunderbird closed from beside him, but neither reached her before she crossed into the sea of divine flame and returned to the waking world. His latest demonstrated state is therefore alive, physically capable, and aligned with the Hunger Domain against his former allies. (Chapter 2826)

Appearance and personality

Roan is tall and broad-shouldered, with straw-colored hair and beard, bright blue eyes, and a blue scarf worn casually around his neck. Years of war make him more rugged and weary without erasing his easy bearing. His Transcendent form is an enormous winged lion with white fur and amber eyes, handsome in the same conspicuous way as his human body. (Chapters 381–383, 979, 1852, and 1881)

He is friendly, practical, observant, and comfortable using humor to put less powerful Awakened at ease. Roan respects honest information, praises competence freely, and gives advice without turning it into a demand. His warmth does not remove fear or fatigue: Tyris's near death leaves him bleak, while later battles test his composure severely. His unexplained submission to Asterion is a supernatural and political condition, not enough evidence to conclude that his underlying personality changed. Abilities and Aspect

The corpus does not give Roan's Aspect name, rank, True Name, Flaw, or a complete progression of Abilities. As a Master he demonstrates lightning attacks and barriers; after Transcending he gains a winged-lion Transformation while retaining lightning-based offense. His battlefield roles center on mobility, aerial access, area denial, and bringing dangerous targets down for allied strikers. (Chapters 980, 1005–1007, 1842, and 1881–1886)

Lightning and battlefield control

Roan can create lightning between planted metal rods, forming an electrified wall that incinerates weaker abominations and delays a horde until his essence runs low. He also hurls lightning through a sword strongly enough to blast back the corpse of a Great Terror. In the Devouring Cloud operation, arcs of thunder marked his passage inside the swarm while he worked to isolate and ground its Tyrants. The exact division between Aspect effects, Memories, and mundane conductors is not disclosed. (Chapters 980, 1005–1007, and 1886)

The shown limitations are tactical rather than formal. Stronger creatures can endure or bypass the lightning barrier, maintaining it consumes finite essence, and entering the Devouring Cloud to position its Tyrants leaves Roan badly wounded. His lightning is eventually “extinguished” during the Vanishing Lake ambush as exhaustion and accumulated injuries overwhelm him. The corpus does not establish immunity to lightning, weather control, or independent command of Tyris's wind powers. (Chapters 980, 1007, 1050, and 1898)

Winged-lion Transformation

Roan's Transcendent form is a giant white lion with functional wings. It can descend safely into the Hollows, fly through the Sky Below, carry armor shaped for the Transformation, and maintain extraordinary speed on the ground even with its wings folded. The form also provides the strength and resilience expected of a Saint, but Lonesome Howl and a Reflection batter him almost to death at Vanishing Lake, demonstrating that it remains vulnerable to peer Transcendents and prolonged combat. (Chapters 1881, 1898–1904, 2082, and 2826)

Roan's old griffin is not this Transformation. It was a special Echo and part of Tyris's Aspect Legacy, originally lent or gifted to him for patrols. By the Domain War it had reached Transcendence and served as Telle's protector instead. Treating the griffin as Roan's innate power or continuing possession would therefore conflate three separate custodial stages. (Chapters 381–383 and 1881)

Relationships

• Tyris: Tyris is Roan's wife, clan leader, and closest battlefield partner. He supports her rule, helps execute her Antarctic plans, and protects the clan when she is incapacitated. They later steer the Night Garden and pursue Jet together after both become subjects of Asterion. (Chapters 381, 466–474, 1005–1051, 2210, and 2822–2826)
• Telle: Telle is Roan and Tyris's daughter. Roan's Transcendence increases their family's standing, and Telle gives him armor to celebrate it; the family's former griffin becomes her protector. All three stand together at the end of the Domain War. (Chapters 1842, 1852, 1881, 1898, and 2210)
• Sunny: Roan treats Sunny kindly from their first meeting, later helps evacuate his Antarctic convoy and fights beside him in Godgrave. Their trust grows from practical cooperation, although Roan's latest allegiance to Asterion places him on the opposing side of Sunny's allies. (Chapters 381–474, 979–1051, 1881–1905, and 2822–2826)
• Nephis: Roan serves under Nephis in the Sword Army, follows her public defiance of Anvil, and survives the war that creates her Human Domain. Items

Roan's white griffin was a special Echo originating from Tyris's Aspect Legacy, not an innate Transformation. It carried him during the Chained Isles period, but by the Domain War it had reached Transcendence and protected Telle. Roan also wears Belated Apology, an unnamed-in-catalogue armor Memory given by his daughter to celebrate his Transcendence; it adapts to his lion form and is nearly destroyed at Vanishing Lake.
