Ki Song

Ki Song was one of humanity's first Sovereigns and the ruler who raised Clan Song from a minor Legacy family into a Great Clan. Her authority joined blood, decay, puppetry, and the dead into a territorial Domain whose servants built and defended Ravenheart. She died fighting Nephis at the end of the Domain War. Biography

The obscure ruler behind a Great Clan

Early public accounts described Ki Song as a rarely seen, benevolent ruler whose adopted daughters acted in her name. She had inherited a lesser clan founded by her mother, Ravenheart, then elevated it until its Citadel became the second great human stronghold in the Dream Realm. The distance and lethal terrain separating her territory from Valor helped preserve both her isolation and the mystery surrounding her power. (Chapters 369, 803, 1103)

That obscurity did not mean passivity. Ki Song and Anvil divided much of the human Dream Realm between their territorial Domains, competed for Citadels, and suppressed the uncontrolled emergence of rival Saints. During the Antarctic crisis she sent adopted daughters, Awakened forces, and Mordret against Valor's expedition, using the race for the Tomb of Ariel as another front in their longer struggle. The campaign failed to give either clan the tomb, but it made open war between the Sovereigns inevitable. (Chapters 1073–1076, 1102–1103, 1185–1229, 1528)

A hunter's daughter and the rise of the dead

Ki Song was born around the descent of the Nightmare Spell and grew up near the sleeping pod of her often-absent mother. As a young Sleeper she lacked the inherited advantages visible in the heirs of greater clans, but excelled in survival, tracking, weapons, subterfuge, and efficient killing. After Ravenheart died far from home, Ki Song crossed the Dream Realm with Orum, reclaimed the Jade Palace, and slaughtered the Awakened who had taken advantage of her mother's death or refused to help her. Her first powers animated constructed objects, while wounds she inflicted continued to widen, bleed, and rot. At the Jade Palace she realized that corpses were more useful puppets than fragile clay bodies and raised her slain enemies as defenders. She later joined Broken Sword, became a Master and then a Saint, opened the River of Tears to the Stormsea, and developed the East. She found the Lineage of Beast God at an unknown point after Awakening, then emerged as the Raven Queen after conquering a Fourth Nightmare. (Chapters 1938–1944)

Dominion in Ravenheart and Godgrave

As a Sovereign, Ki Song collected anything that died within her Domain. Human and monstrous corpses traveled to the Ice Halls beneath Ravenheart, where they became tireless pilgrims. She used them as laborers, guards, and soldiers: they accelerated roads and construction, spared living workers exhaustion, and reinforced the culture of reverence that treated the Queen's grace as the reason ordinary people remained alive. The same system made death a constant, unsettling presence in Song territory. (Chapters 1624, 1628–1629, 1679, 1776–1778)

After a Song Citadel was conquered in Godgrave, Ki Song descended personally, killed a Great Demon, stopped a Nightmare Creature stampede, and stabilized her cornered army. Her Domain then spread south as Song soldiers and Citadels extended its reach. She also raised soldiers and abominations killed in the fighting, turning Valor's victories into additional pilgrims and waging a hidden campaign in the ash beneath the Greater Crossing until her dead could create a path across the chasm. A dead queen's bargain with Cassie

When Cassie deliberately entered Song custody, she discovered that the beautiful body on Ki Song's throne was already dead. The Queen's consciousness existed through all her puppets at once, rather than inhabiting one replaceable body, and her speech could pass through nearby corpses. This distributed existence explained both her strange absence from divination and the scale of her survival: killing one vessel merely destroyed a minute part of an entity spread across myriads of dead servants. Ki Song had Cassie drink a drop of her blood and thereby gained control over the seer's body and partial leverage over her soul. She used that control to extract information and later forced Cassie to fight for Song. During their audience, however, the Queen also supplied a history of Broken Sword's cohort and the decisions surrounding his death. Cassie used the meeting for her own purpose, deepening the doubts of Seishan and preparing Ki Song's daughters to abandon their mother at the decisive moment. (Chapters 2186–2195, 2201–2203)

The Queen's last battle

Ki Song and Anvil arranged a final clash that sacrificed armies and manipulated Nephis and the Lord of Shadows into weakening both sides. Ki Song raised the battlefield's dead, commanded a colossal flesh vessel fed by a river of blood, repaired damage through her puppets, and fought with authority over blood, decay, flesh, and souls. The scheme weakened both Sovereigns, but it also pushed Nephis and Sunny through their final steps to Supremacy while the daughters of Song defected into Nephis's nascent Domain. Nephis countered Ki Song by fighting as a bloodless spirit of flame, burning the Queen's vessels faster than they could regenerate and destroying the blood that linked Cassie to her. Ki Song could have withdrawn through hidden puppets, so Nephis used the safety of the adopted daughters as leverage to keep her fighting. The Queen's love for them overcame her instinct for survival; she remained until her distributed blood and vessels were annihilated, dying after a final close struggle of Will. (Chapters 2254–2259)

A dangerous inheritance

The Song Domain collapsed with Ki Song, but the infrastructure and family she created survived. Her daughters retained Citadels, the Beast God lineage she had forced upon them, and influence across the western Human Domain. Seishan inherited the core of the lineage, while Beastmaster continued directing much of the region's logistics. Their later lives show that Ki Song had prepared formidable heirs, even though those heirs rejected the ruthless order she tried to preserve. (Chapters 2258, 2270, 2305–2308, 2781)

Ki Song also left concealed knowledge about Asterion, including the reason he had been sealed rather than killed. Her records helped reveal Mordret's weakness and the Dreamspawn's dependence on being known, while later testimony claimed that Asterion had received the Lineage of Beast God from her and that she helped erase knowledge of him for decades. These secrets remained strategically important long after her death, but later claims about her motives are necessarily filtered through heirs, enemies, and surviving records. Appearance and personality

Ki Song's principal human vessel was a breathtaking woman with corpse-pale skin, long lustrous black hair, and distant dark eyes. She wore a red gown that spilled around her throne like blood. Her beauty was exact enough to seem alive because she controlled every muscle and stage of decay in the corpse with extraordinary precision, yet observers still sensed an emptiness beneath it and a subtle bestial presence more frightening than Anvil's overt pressure. As a girl, Ki Song was quiet, self-contained, pragmatic, and broadly skilled rather than ostentatiously gifted. Her mother's death hardened those traits into ruthless contempt for bystanders and a willingness to use the dead when the living failed her. As Queen, she remained reticent and could be coldly cruel, but her love for her adopted daughters was genuine enough to become the decisive weakness that kept her on the final battlefield. Abilities and Aspect

Puppetry, blood, and decay

Ki Song's early Awakened Ability animated inanimate objects and controlled them like puppets. Her other demonstrated power made even a shallow injury worsen with time: flesh rotted, the cut expanded, and blood continued to flow until the target died. She later applied puppetry directly to corpses and mastered control down to posture, expression, speech, decomposition, and restoration, making the dead imitate life or serve as tireless laborers and soldiers. Her blood created another route to control. A person who drank it could have their body moved like a marionette, and the Queen could make that body decay; the effect also interfered with the victim's soul and Aspect without erasing all independent thought. Cassie continued thinking and retained limited access to her powers, establishing that the link was formidable but not absolute. Ki Song could also attack souls directly with her Supreme Will. Domain and distributed vessels

The dead were the source element and vessels of Ki Song's Domain. Within her territorial authority, corpses of humans and Nightmare Creatures came under her control and could travel to Ravenheart or fight where they fell. Her own original corpse was only one puppet among myriads; her consciousness and presence existed through the entire network simultaneously, allowing her to speak, perceive, and act through many bodies while transferring damage among them. This distribution made Ki Song extraordinarily difficult to kill, not limitless. Destroyed puppets reduced her available vessels, and damage could only be transferred while suitable puppets remained. Sunny's shadow legion systematically annihilated them while Nephis burned her flesh and blood faster than it could be restored. Her Domain also depended on territory, Citadels, subjects, and the dead it accumulated, leaving her weakened after the war stripped away all four. (Chapters 1945, 2251–2259)

Combat skill, lineage, and unknown Flaw

Ki Song was an expert hunter and survivalist proficient with bows, melee weapons, and unarmed combat before her powers matured. She later bore the Lineage of Beast God and wielded Supreme authority over blood and decay. Her kilometer-tall flesh golem, river-of-blood form, puppeted armies, and direct attacks of Will were expressions of accumulated Domain power rather than evidence of an unlimited ability to create matter or resurrect independent people. The name and exact terms of her Aspect and Flaw are not supplied. Sunny and Cassie suspected that the Flaw prevented her from bearing children because of hints in Orum's memories, but explicitly acknowledged that this was only a cautious guess. Her devotion to her adopted daughters was an exploitable emotional weakness, not confirmation of the supernatural Flaw's mechanics. (Chapter 1944)

Ki Song adopted orphan girls, raised them as a close family, infected them with the Nightmare Spell, and forced the Beast God lineage upon them. Seven became Saints and served as her princesses. She loved them, but still sent them into a war that left several near death; that contradiction allowed Cassie and Nephis to turn Seishan, Beastmaster, Moonveil, and the others against her. Their survival after her fall preserves her greatest constructive legacy and exposes the cost of her control. (Chapters 1776, 1944, 2183–2195, 2258, 2308)

Anvil, Broken Sword, and Asterion

Ki Song trained and rose alongside Anvil, Smile of Heaven, Broken Sword, and Asterion. She later joined Broken Sword's cohort, but after his fall she and Anvil became rival Sovereigns who nevertheless cooperated to suppress Ascension, conceal dangerous truths, and imprison Asterion on the moon. Their alliance never erased their competition for territory, culminating in a Domain War meant to leave only one monarch. (Chapters 778–794, 1073–1075, 1528, 1935–1944, 2254, 2732)

Orum and Nephis

Orum was her mother's friend, early teacher, traveling guardian, and a remnant of the compassionate world Ki Song lost. Their relationship became distant as her power and ruthlessness grew, but she still remembered him as family and honored his sacrifice by receiving his niece Helie. Nephis, by contrast, was both the daughter of Ki Song's former friend and the enemy who used her maternal love against her. Ki Song fought Nephis fiercely to the end rather than abandon her daughters to a threat. (Chapters 1936–1944, 2182–2195, 2258)

Ki Song acquired the Lineage Memory of Beast God sometime after Awakening, but the corpus does not identify the Memory, show its acquisition, or establish that it remained an inventory item after consumption. No named weapon, armor, or other personal Memory is consistently assigned to her. Her corpses and colossal flesh vessel were products of her Aspect and Domain, not ordinary owned items.
