Dorman Whistles

Dorman Whistles is a speed-focused cultivator whose competitive pride gradually gives way to loyalty and humility. After an ill-judged treasure leaves him unable to use his speed effectively, Jack’s help lets him recover, advance, and return as one of Earth’s defenders. (Chapters 51–426)

Biography

The Integration Tournament and a Worthy Rival

Dorman first draws attention at the Integration Tournament as a Level 38 teenager whose Dao of Speed lets him put a dagger to an opponent’s throat before she can draw her weapon. He is initially cold toward anyone he considers weak, but his interest in Jack is immediate: he asks for a spar because Jack is strong enough to make him improve. Their match exposes the mix behind his speed—rapid acceleration, abrupt changes of direction, timing, and twin-dagger technique—and ends in a draw after Dorman’s lightning-charged strike wounds Jack and Jack’s counter leaves Dorman exhausted. The contest earns Jack his respect; Dorman joins the Flame River alliance even though the wager does not force the outcome. (Chapters 51, 59–62)

The tournament also shows both the reach and limits of Dorman’s two-Dao approach. He defeats Fesh Wui after being driven to the defensive by the flyer’s wind and talons, revealing a second Dao Skill that turns the clash with his speed-based techniques. Against Rufus Emberheart, however, the same split cultivation is still far from forming either Dao Seed, and Rufus’s Supremacy shield drains and suppresses Dorman’s power. His combined skills can barely scratch the shield before their cost leaves him on his knees. The humiliating loss does not make him abandon the alliance: he wishes Jack luck, then volunteers as Jack’s training partner. When the tournament’s final battle turns into a fight against the scions, Dorman and Li Xiang hold the line together; their coordinated attacks help bring down Shard Presht, while Li later takes an ice spike meant for Dorman. Dorman then throws himself against the Ice Peak fighters, frustrated when their teamwork counters him. (Chapters 84, 90–94, 102–104)

The Sage’s Church and the Trial Planet

Dorman travels with the Sage and the Black Hole Church, whose wider purpose he already knows when Jack encounters the group again. He and Jack have remained friends despite their earlier separation, and Dorman helps orient him to the Church’s affairs. During the Trial Planet conflict, Dorman protects a wounded Longsword from a follow-up attack: his obsidian daggers block the strike, then his lightning-charged acceleration drives Longsword back. He recognizes that the injured opponent would have been worth fighting at full strength, but tells him to step aside. (Chapters 177–179, 199, 212–213)

His loyalty to the Sage has limits when it threatens the group’s mission. After the Sage gives Jack the Dao Sprouting Pill they had come to obtain, Dorman angrily demands an explanation and points out that the pill was the reason for their journey. The Sage’s prediction that Jack’s friendship matters more does not immediately settle Dorman’s doubts, but he continues to trust and follow him. Later, the Sage describes Dorman as highly talented and says the Barren High had predicted his presence on Earth; Dorman, unlike Jack, was not an unexplained arrival. (Chapters 210, 290)

A Treasure’s Cost and the Long Road Back

By the time Jack sees him at the Cathedral, Dorman has reached D-Grade and developed a Dao Tree, but an overpowered treasure has changed his body so severely that it undermines the very speed on which his combat style depends. He admits he took it after following the Dense Dao and becoming desperate to advance. The resulting bulk limits his movement and combat ability; he is late D-Grade, cannot leave the Cathedral before reaching C-Grade, and lacks the Dao stones and standing needed to break through. He cannot enter the Heavy Pagoda even if he qualifies as a disciple, because the Pagoda’s increasing gravity would multiply his already enormous weight. His former arrogance has been worn down by repeated failure and isolation. When Jack promises to save Dao stones for him, Dorman chooses to wait and cultivate beside the Pagoda rather than abandon his friend. (Chapters 331–334)

That dependence becomes painfully immediate when Don Cranxiao beats Dorman in front of Jack and leaves him without a cabin. Dorman apologizes and acknowledges that his own decisions helped bring him here; Jack and Brock answer by taking him into their home and making clear he belongs with them. He remains patient when Jack cannot yet help, and later does not ask for Dao stones while Brock’s earnings are being divided, despite nearing the peak of D-Grade and needing resources for a breakthrough. Jack promises to restore his body with controlled life energy before helping him advance. By the time Jack returns from the Cathedral, Dorman has reached middle C-Grade: Jack’s treatment removed the treasure’s excess energy and restored his fit condition, while the Dao stones he provided enabled Dorman’s breakthrough. (Chapters 335, 343, 352–354, 359, 369, 426)

Earth’s Protector and the Church’s War

Dorman returns to Earth after the Cathedral is invaded and remains there as one of the planet’s protectors. When Artus attacks near the hidden-realm teleporter, Dorman intercepts the destructive blow with his daggers and prevents it from reaching the land. He and Huali pursue Artus without unleashing their full strength, because a direct battle would devastate the populated forest below. Dorman’s role has changed from a teenager seeking worthy opponents to a guardian who must judge not only whether he can win, but what his power would endanger. (Chapter 426)

After Eric is kidnapped, Dorman shares the distress felt by Huali and the others. When Jack later gathers old companions on Earth, Dorman declines Edgar’s offer to teach at the new academy: he is a cultivator of the Black Hole Church, and with Earth safe, he intends to join its war. He accompanies Jack and the Church’s party onward, later leaving the Death Boat to join the front lines. His final choice continues the loyalty he showed Jack and the Sage, now directed toward a wider conflict. (Chapters 436, 463, 466, 478)

Appearance and personality

At the Integration Tournament, Dorman looks like a short, slim, Asian-looking teenager with a nonchalant manner and twin daggers at his waist. His treasure-induced condition later makes him a short, extremely broad man whose weight and altered shape obstruct his speed. Jack’s life-energy treatment eventually restores his fit condition. (Chapters 51, 61, 331–332, 426)

Dorman is intensely competitive and initially measures people by strength, but his respect for Jack becomes a durable friendship. He is proud and can bristle when embarrassed, yet he accepts help without demanding it and remembers favors. His impatience and bluntness coexist with loyalty: he challenges the Sage when the Church’s mission is put at risk, supports Jack through repeated crises, and accepts responsibility for protecting Earth. (Chapters 60–62, 210, 335, 346, 369, 426, 463)

Abilities and cultivation

Dorman’s fighting style draws on separate Dao Roots of Speed and Lightning. He uses movement and twin daggers to attack from changing angles, then layers lightning into his acceleration and strikes. At the tournament, he says the Dao Skills associated with the two paths work together; he later applies them in combat against Longsword and during the fight on Earth. The two paths initially divide his cultivation, delaying the point at which either Root can develop into a Dao Seed. His later D-Grade status confirms that his cultivation advanced to a Dao Tree, but the precise intervening Dao milestones are not stated. (Chapters 61–62, 84, 90, 212, 334)

Dao of Speed and twin-dagger combat

Dorman’s speed is more than straight-line velocity. In his spar with Jack, he changes momentum so quickly that an observer’s eyes continue tracking his previous direction, briefly making him seem to disappear. His control, reactions, and maneuverability let him dart in and out of range and deliver repeated cuts. He can also alter his rhythm and move in erratic, worm-like patterns, which helps him counter Fesh Wui’s aerial strikes despite being unable to fly. When Fesh’s wind and a wound impair Dorman’s depth perception, the fight shifts against him; Dorman wins only after revealing an additional lightning technique. (Chapters 61, 84)

Against Rufus, Dorman uses the named Lightning Form Dao Skill to intensify his movement and circle his opponent, but it consumes mana rapidly. Rufus’s Supremacy shield weakens Dorman’s Dao and muscles on contact, blunts his lightning attacks, and prevents the speed-based assault from reaching him. Dorman’s ultimate combination of three Dao Skills breaks the sound barrier but is still reduced to two scratches. His speed is therefore highly effective against opponents he can reach and overwhelm, but it cannot bypass a sufficiently strong counter or compensate for the power cost of prolonged full-output use. (Chapter 90)

Dao of Lightning

Dorman’s lightning appears through the Dao of Lightning: sparks run across his body and hair, his daggers become wreathed in electricity, and his attacks gain sudden acceleration and force. His named technique Twin Lightning Fang releases the daggers in a lightning-fast paired strike; during the spar with Jack, Dorman says he cannot yet control it well. Against Fesh Wui, he combines his lightning with his speed and another, unnamed Dao Skill to exploit a moment in the aerial exchange. He later uses lightning-enhanced movement and dagger strikes against the scions, Longsword, and Artus. The demonstrated weakness is the heavy mana cost of Lightning Form and the inability of even his strongest lightning combination to overcome Rufus’s protective counter. (Chapters 61, 84, 90, 102, 212, 426)
