Biography

A Ghostly Mentor at Earth’s Tournament

Shol arrives on recently integrated Earth as the Exploding Sun’s tournament mentor, appearing to Jack as an incorporeal, ghost-like monk. He quickly turns Jack’s ambition into a training plan: raise Drill and Parkour to the third tier, develop a fighting style, and build skills around Jack’s own path rather than copy another fighter. Shol teaches with blunt standards, but he also answers Jack’s questions about the galaxy and treats Brock warmly. He believes a student must ultimately walk his own Dao, so he deliberately limits how much he dictates Jack’s path. (Chapters 70–71, 89, 93–94)

That principle is tested when Jack asks him to protect Earth from the Animal Kingdom. Shol refuses to risk the Exploding Sun for Jack’s faction, explaining that only an elder can sponsor a subordinate faction and that Jack must face the consequences of his choices. He still helps Jack plan for survival and keeps training him after their argument. At the tournament, however, Shol bets on Jack: after the Barren High advises him to do so, Shol pleads with his own master to accept Jack, protects him during his dangerous breakthrough, and publicly threatens anyone who interferes. His master Huali ultimately abandons Jack, leaving Shol furious and helping Jack flee. (Chapters 76, 80–82, 95–99, 106)

Disciple, Deacon, and Jack’s Sworn Brother

Shol brings Jack into the Exploding Sun and proudly introduces him to its people as his brilliant disciple. Their relationship changes as Jack rapidly catches up in grade: Shol is still more than a hundred levels ahead, but Jack has become an immortal too. Shol shares the faction’s hierarchy and resources with him and brings him to meet Huali, his own master. His warmth toward Jack persists alongside his responsibilities to Huali and the faction. (Chapters 234–240, 246)

When faction politics turn against them, Shol and Jack become rogue cultivators in Huali’s camp. Shol travels with Jack into Hell, where the Exploding Sun’s rival Li Qian tracks him using the lifeblood Shol had provided as a deacon. Shol recognizes that his faction service exposed their position and takes responsibility for the danger. In the ensuing battles, he confronts Li Qian, whose ultimate technique had defeated Shol in earlier spars. Shol loses their Hell duel and is left unconscious, but the near-fatal encounter gives him the final insight needed to unleash his own Supernova in their next fight. (Chapters 255–258, 292–295, 318)

After escaping Hell, Shol tells Jack that he must return to Huali and the Exploding Sun to decide what comes next. He later fights beside Jack again on Earth, then leaves to resume those responsibilities. Jack calls him his sworn brother and former master. (Chapters 302–303, 315–323, 413)

Searching for Jack

When Earth’s people are scattered through space, Shol becomes one of the few who knows the planet’s teleporter frequency and is meant to serve as a fallback. He gives the frequency to Huali and goes searching for Jack through System space. Huali’s later account reveals this choice after Jack finds Shol imprisoned in the Animal Kingdom’s dungeons; Shol had been captured shortly before Jack returned to the galaxy. Shol is famished but alive, and he helps Jack and their companions return to Earth using alternate teleporter frequencies the professor had taught him. (Chapters 415–417, 426, 461)

By the gathering after Jack’s final battle, Shol is with Huali, drinking and laughing as they watch Jack’s fight. His return to her side follows years of separation, captivity, and travel with Jack; he is again able to share an ordinary evening with the people who remain close to him. Even after his work as a mentor and guide, Shol’s place in Jack’s circle is still personal: he watches the battle with affection and humor rather than trying to direct its outcome. (Chapter 552)

Appearance and personality

In his first appearance, Shol is a bald, bronze-skinned monk with a stern, wrinkled face and a dark triangular beard reaching from his cheeks to his throat. His projection is ethereal and cannot spot Brock’s weights. When he later fights in bodily form, golden light surrounds him and six arms extend from his back. (Chapters 70–71, 294–295)

Shol is strict, proud of his faction, and quick to anger when challenged, yet he is also generous with instruction and loyal to people he accepts as his own. He makes a point of treating the Exploding Sun’s workers kindly, following Huali’s example. His decisions show the tension between his sense of faction duty and his willingness to risk himself for Jack. (Chapters 76, 94, 236)

Abilities and cultivation

Shol is a D-Grade immortal affiliated with the Exploding Sun and wields the Dao of Explosion. His precise level within D-Grade is not stated. In his spirit projection he can communicate, train Jack, and exert his Dao, though that manifestation is incorporeal; in bodily combat he displays a destructive golden battle form. (Chapters 70–71, 97, 293–295)

Dao of Explosion and golden battle form

Shol can release the full force of his Dao strongly enough to silence a tournament crowd, and he later uses it to create miniature suns, solar beams, and explosive palm strikes. In his golden battle form, six arms appear behind him, each able to wield a miniature sun; light also escapes his mouth and eyes. His palms can block a sword strike that cuts through earth, while a clap releases an explosion that carves a mile-wide fissure. The battle form can be broken by sufficiently powerful attacks, and Shol’s Dao reserves can run nearly dry after sustained combat. (Chapters 97, 106, 293–295, 318)

Supernova

Shol’s earlier battles with Li Qian ended in defeats because Shol had not faced the full force of Li Qian’s Supernova Slash. Their near-fatal duel on Hell gives Shol the final insight he needs to answer it. When they clash again on Earth, Shol remains standing after countering the Slash and names his own attack Supernova. The exchange leaves him scorched, his golden form gone, and his Dao reserves nearly depleted, but he flies away under his own power. The precise mechanics and lasting cost of the technique are not explained. (Chapters 295, 318)
