Edgar Allano
Edgar Allano is Jack Rust’s early ally, a wizard whose belief in magic as wonder and beauty repeatedly conflicts with the violence demanded by war. His choices help defend Jack’s people, but leave lasting costs to his Dao and future cultivation.
Biography
A wizard joins Jack’s faction
Edgar begins as an ordinary survivor with a talent for magic and an appetite for the possibilities it represents. After Jack offers him a place among the people gathering around the Bare Fist Brotherhood, Edgar accepts, bringing useful spells and a willingness to fight alongside people he barely knows. He uses mana to cast attacks and shields, and he treats magic as a craft to develop rather than a fixed set of tricks. The Professor’s instruction and access to ArTazul’s Dao Fruit of Magic give him a path toward the deeper magic he wants; after training, he gains a Dao Root of Magic (Chapters 35–45).
At the Integration Tournament, Edgar starts among the weaker contestants and compensates by studying opponents, planning counters, and making his limited mana do more work. He reaches the final eight through persistent preparation, then faces Jack in a duel that tests both his tactical skill and his willingness to improvise. Edgar combines spells, terrain, projections, and environmental elements; although Jack wins, Edgar pushes him hard enough to earn his respect. The tournament makes their rivalry a lasting friendship, while Edgar’s prize money lets him buy a staff that supports his developing magic (Chapters 52–105).
Magic’s ideals meet the Ice Peak war
Edgar’s magic is tied to awe, beauty, and wonder, but the war forces him to choose between that ideal and the safety of his allies. After reaching E-Grade, he attacks the Ice Peak headquarters at Iceberg Palace. He frees the starving polar bears imprisoned there and directs them against the faction’s forces, then uses magic to destroy the base. He knows that some of those present may be coerced or innocent, and the attack leaves him panicked and sickened; he continues because he believes the Ice Peak would otherwise kill his friends. The assault saves his side from an immediate threat but kills many people and creates a debt he later accepts as his own (Chapter 195).
When Jack’s faction reaches D-Grade, Alexander Petrovic comes to Edgar’s forest headquarters and challenges him to a duel to the death over the attack and the death of Alexander’s son. The Professor urges Edgar to stay, warning that Alexander is stronger and that the war needs him. Edgar understands the tactical cost, yet decides that refusing a fair challenge would betray the values behind his Dao: he believes Alexander has a right to seek redress, and that he cannot call himself an awe-inspiring magician while hiding from the consequences of his own violence. He takes to the sky to meet Alexander; the chapter ends as their duel begins, so its outcome is not established there (Chapter 226).
Borrowed power, a broken pact, and a life after war
During the later battle for Earth, Edgar decides that protecting his friends matters more than preserving his former relationship with magic. He accepts a devil’s shell around his Dao Seed, which channels the Seed into more battle-oriented magic while consuming his soul in proportion to the power he uses. Edgar experiences this as the loss of the beauty he once served, calling himself the Destroyer as he fights. The power is borrowed and conditional, and he understands that continuing to use it will eventually erase him (Chapters 297, 313).
Edgar’s fight against Vlossana turns on the empathy he had tried to suppress. His elemental convergence could devastate a village, but when he reaches Vlossana’s emotions through their clash of Dao, he recognizes how grief and manipulation have narrowed her choices. He cannot bring himself to kill her. He tears away the devil’s shell and exposes his original Dao, accepting that its crack will end his advancement; the devil’s deal then fails, and its chains on Edgar’s soul are broken. Vlossana’s hand has destroyed his heart, and Edgar appears to die while holding her, but the Sage restores his heart with life energy. Edgar survives, freed from the contract but unable to progress further. His choice saves Vlossana and lets him reclaim the compassion and wonder he thought he had surrendered (Chapter 313).
After the war, Edgar returns to teaching and building rather than seeking another fight. He receives a magical copy of his lost leg and later helps establish an academy, where he uses his experience to educate a new generation. His friends remain important to him, and he is proud when Jack and Vivi’s daughter Ebele attends the school. At later gatherings he speaks as its headmaster, with the authority of someone who has chosen a durable responsibility over the battlefield. His cultivation remains capped by the damaged Dao even as his work and relationships continue to grow (Chapters 289, 323–376, 436, 461–463, 552).
Appearance and personality
Edgar is a human man who uses a wizard’s staff and is often surrounded by conjured blue birds. Later, he wears a magical copy in place of a lost leg. He is thoughtful and methodical, studying opponents before fights, but his defining trait is empathy: he is troubled by the people harmed in his attack on Ice Peak and ultimately cannot kill Vlossana after understanding her grief. His ideals can make him accept dangers he knows are strategically unwise.
Abilities and cultivation
Edgar’s magic is powered by mana and shaped by his Dao Root and later Dao Seed of Magic. Rather than relying only on fixed elemental spells, he can imbue and direct the environment around him, combining spellwork, terrain, and tactical observation. He is versatile, but his mana and emotional composure impose real limits; panic disrupts his control, and his broad class gives him less direct battle specialization than a focused class would.
Dao of Magic and Arcane Body
Edgar gains a Dao Root of Magic after using the Dao Fruit of Magic and training under the Professor. He develops his Root into a Seed when he breaks through to E-Grade. His understanding of magic centers on wonder, beauty, and awe, and these are not merely sentiments: he believes acting against that understanding can crack his Dao and end his path. The Ice Peak assault and Alexander’s challenge therefore become cultivation decisions as well as moral ones. He chooses to answer Alexander because he believes refusing responsibility would betray the Dao; later, the devil pact temporarily lets him fight without shattering the Seed, but its shell distorts the way he uses magic (Chapters 45, 183, 195, 226, 297).
At E-Grade, Edgar selects Arcane Body (Elite) rather than Elemental Adept. The class provides broad magical affinity and flexibility, while the alternative is presented as more combat-oriented. Edgar’s versatility supports creative combinations but does not make him a specialist in raw battle power. After the devil shell is removed, the Dao Seed is visibly cracked; the contract’s end leaves Edgar permanently unable to advance (Chapters 183, 313).
Environmental spellcraft and tactical casting
Edgar’s demonstrated spells include fire, shields, whips, mana birds, arrows, wind, ice, vines, and other elemental effects. He can direct many attacks at once, using his intelligence to coordinate their aim. Against tournament opponents he studies how to counter their abilities and adapts spells to the arena; he also learns to use surrounding energy such as wind and sand instead of spending mana on every effect. His staff helps channel and visualize his magic. These techniques make him resourceful and hard to predict, not every spell has a formal name or fully described mechanics (Chapters 35–36, 65, 82–84).
His later combat shows the range and scale of this control. At Iceberg Palace, he melts ice, frees the caged bears, and directs magic and terrain against the Ice Peak headquarters. In the fight with Vlossana, he combines fire, freezing air, wind, and a compressed elemental convergence that he estimates could destroy a village. The convergence is not simply a stronger projectile: the exchange brings him into contact with Vlossana’s emotions through their Dao, which changes his decision and causes the attack to dissipate. His empathy can interrupt a lethal attack, while Vlossana’s Will-based assaults can penetrate his defenses and overwhelm him (Chapters 195, 313).
Devil’s shell and magical restoration
The shell Etsin constructs around Edgar’s Dao Seed harnesses its power for a more battle-oriented form of magic. It gives Edgar access to combat power he cannot otherwise wield, but every use spends his soul; it is a temporary pact, not a mastery or permanent evolution of his Dao. Edgar ultimately tears the shell away, leaving a crack in his original Dao and ending his ability to progress. The contract breaks when the devil fails to fulfill its terms, freeing Edgar’s soul; the Sage’s intervention restores Edgar’s heart and life, not his cultivation path (Chapter 313).
By Chapter 289, Edgar has a magical copy in place of his lost leg. The replacement lets Edgar remain active; who made it and whether it has combat functions are unknown. (Chapters 275, 289)
