The Sage

The Sage is a diviner who becomes one of Jack Rust’s trusted allies and a guide to the Black Hole Church. “The Sage” is the identity he claims, not a known personal name; later revelations explain that Enas’s soul fragment was placed in his body, but the Sage and Enas are separate beings until Enas occupies that body. (Chapters 54, 178, 477, 557)

Biography

A Name Chosen After the System

The Sage approaches Jack in Integration City as a homeless-looking man and introduces himself with the title he has adopted: “My name means nothing. The Sage is who I am.” He describes a life before the System spent alone between park benches, rehabilitation, and mental institutions, with no future beyond dying under a bridge. The System gives him power and purpose; he says he “chanced upon the Dao of Divination.” He does not provide a former personal name, and later tells Jack that even if he once had one, it is now void. (Chapters 54, 178)

His first meeting with Jack establishes both his humor and his usefulness. He accurately predicts a street-market incident, warns Jack to prepare two million credits for an auction, and explains some of the political stakes around the Animal Kingdom and the Hand of God. The prediction proves accurate the following chapter. As Jack’s ally, the Sage helps build the Flame River alliance and supports Jack’s efforts during the tournament and the conflict that follows. He rarely seeks direct combat; in the tournament he resigns against Edgar because he knows his charm would not overcome Edgar’s magic and he could not survive the counterattack. He later uses divination to unsettle or daze opponents into resigning, but his predictions are not infallible. (Chapters 54–55, 63, 79, 95)

The Church, Trial Planet, and Hell

The Sage’s Church affiliation becomes important when he reunites with Jack on Trial Planet. He guides the group through dangerous routes and explains the Church’s goals: dismantling the System, killing the Immortals, restoring peace, and reviving Enas. The Sage takes Jack through a Dao Vision of the Ancients and the Old Gods, giving him the Church’s account of Enas and the System’s origin while warning that he will not reveal the whole truth. At this point, Jack trusts him as a mentor and confidant, but the Church’s account is an interested perspective rather than a complete explanation. (Chapters 177–178, 199–200, 282–284)

On Hell, the Sage helps Jack, Shol, and Dordok escape pursuit using a dark spatial sphere and knowledge of a hidden refuge. His spatial transport and other displays are substantial, but the dark sphere is an artifact, not established as an innate power. After the group returns to the Cathedral, he supports Jack’s recovery and cultivation of the Dao of Life, teaches him about Dao glyphs and formations, and creates Life Stones that can heal cultivators. He becomes a one-fruit C-Grade Diviner, sells Life Stones, and gains privileges at the Cathedral while remaining outside the Ranking Obelisk. These roles make his support practical as well as prophetic. (Chapters 280, 331–333, 366–367)

The Enas Fragment and the Church’s Plan

The Sage’s importance to the Church is later tied to his origin. After the Animal Kingdom reveals Earth’s location because the Church wants to recruit him, he apologizes to Jack and eventually explains that he was not simply a human whose soul happened to resonate with Enas. Enas split his soul; a Life-Dao-infused fragment entered the world and fused with a compatible body shortly after the Sage’s birth. The Church intended to keep him alive as a key for summoning Enas’s true soul out of the black hole. This revelation changes the meaning of the Sage’s association with the Church, but it does not make him Enas: the Sage is the individual whose body received a fragment, while Enas’s true soul remains a distinct being. The Sage had anticipated danger and expected his body to die while his soul survived, though the mechanism and limits of that expectation are not explained. (Chapters 439, 477, 536)

By the final war, the Sage has reached A-Grade and can use entropy runic columns as part of the plan to awaken Enas. When Enas emerges, he occupies the Sage’s body; the narration continues to call the figure Enas “still looking like Sage.” Enas then merges with Axelor and the other Gods, while a voice associated with the Sage claims the resulting God of All is “me” and says he consumed his siblings rather than fused with them. Whether the Sage’s consciousness survives, is subsumed, or controls the post-fusion identity remains unresolved. Through Chapter 560, the being fighting Jack is referred to as Enas. The Sage’s final fate and continuity therefore remain uncertain; he must not be treated as simply identical to Enas. (Chapters 549, 557–560)

Appearance and personality

The Sage first appears as a short, old, ragged man with yellowed, uneven teeth and grayish hair. He keeps a disarming, humorous manner, but is observant and guarded about his own past and the full truth of the Church. His willingness to help Jack is consistent, though he withholds information until he believes Jack can use it. He enjoys ordinary pleasures, including food, and remains patient when others question his abilities. (Chapters 54, 63, 177–178, 282–284)

Abilities and cultivation

The Sage’s principal path is the Dao of Divination. He uses it to read likely events and guide decisions, but his predictions are not presented as certainty or as a substitute for fighting. He is a diviner rather than a conventional frontline combatant, and several of his strongest support effects rely on artifacts, knowledge, or crafted items. His latest confirmed personal grade is A-Grade before Enas takes his body. (Chapters 54–55, 79, 177–178, 366–367, 549, 557)

Dao of Divination

The Sage says he encountered the Dao of Divination after the System gave him a new purpose. It lets him forecast events and interpret possible paths: his written prediction about the market incident comes true, and later he guides Jack’s group through dangerous terrain and helps choose routes. In combat, he can point at opponents and make their eyes go hazy until they resign, but he refuses to use this against Edgar because Edgar would resist and the Sage could not survive his magic. These examples show a strong but conditional ability; the source does not explain how far ahead he sees, how many futures he can assess, or the cost of divination. (Chapters 54–55, 79, 177, 199–200)

Spatial support, healing, and instruction

The Sage communicates with Jack telepathically and assists allies through support effects, including accelerating Dordok during the escape from Hell and healing him later. His escape from Hell uses a dark spatial sphere, a high-grade artifact. At the Cathedral he creates Life Stones that heal cultivators, teaches Dao glyphs and formations, and advises Jack’s development of the Dao of Life. The stones’ full limits and the source of every support ability remain unknown. (Chapters 95, 280, 286, 331–333, 366–367)

One-fruit C-Grade Diviner366Explicitly identified at the Cathedral; he has special privileges but no ranking-obelisk entry. Earlier grade and fruit milestones are not shown.
A-Grade549The Arch Priestess says the Sage has just reached A-Grade, enabling the use of entropy runic columns in the Enas plan. The intervening grade and fruit steps are not shown.
Enas occupies the Sage’s body557A major state change, not an advancement of the Sage’s own grade. Enas remains a distinct entity; the Sage’s consciousness after possession and the subsequent fusion is unresolved.

Relationships

  • Jack Rust: Friend, mentor, and confidant. The Sage guides Jack from the Integration City through Trial Planet, Hell, and the Cathedral, while gradually revealing the Church’s purpose and the Sage’s own connection to Enas. (Chapters 54–55, 177–178, 280, 282–284, 331–333, 477)
  • Gan Salin: The Sage shows compassion after Gan Salin stabs him on Trial Planet. He forgives Salin and advises him to incorporate the Dao Root of Order, which helps Salin develop the Dao Root of Loyalty. (Chapter 213)
  • Black Hole Church: The Sage is a member and guide whose value to the Church derives from the Enas fragment in his soul. The Church seeks to use him as a key to summon Enas’s true soul. (Chapters 178, 282–284, 439, 477)
  • Enas: Distinct being whose soul fragment entered the Sage’s body early in life. Enas later occupies that body; the final relationship between their consciousnesses is not resolved. (Chapters 477, 557–560)
