Chun Yuchan

Chun Yuchan is the Blade Clan's candidate in the Demonic Academy succession contest and one of the early rivals who recognizes Chun Yeowun as a growing threat.

Biography

A gifted Blade Clan prince

Yuchan enters the Demonic Academy as the Blade Clan's prince and the fifth-ranked candidate for the throne. He handles the first trial with such composure that Lee Hameng marks him, alongside Chun Muyeon, as exceeding expectations. Unlike heirs who dismiss lower-floor manuals, he studies a wide range of blade books, and his teammates later describe him as both exceptionally talented and unusually hardworking beneath his casual manner. Interest in Chun Yeowun

Yuchan is the first clan-backed prince to approach Chun Yeowun as a potential ally rather than merely an embarrassment. After seeing Yeowun use the Butterfly Blade Dance, he calls him “brother,” claims to admire his path of the blade, and offers him a place in the Blade Clan. The friendly language conceals a hard condition: Yeowun is expected to abandon his own candidacy and stand beside Yuchan. When Yeowun refuses, Yuchan gathers blade qi in his right arm with the intention of crippling him, but stops after noticing that Yeowun has already moved beyond the attack's line. He leaves a blade-qi scar in the ground as a warning while privately acknowledging that this opponent can read danger. (Chapters 33–34)

The encounter shows Yuchan at his most attractive and dangerous. He can be genuinely enthusiastic about talent and addresses Yeowun with more warmth than the other princes, yet he still treats another person's martial future as something he may destroy if recruitment fails. His later efforts to recruit Bakgi and Mun Ku follow the same factional logic: exceptional fighters are valuable if they become his assets and obstacles if they do not. (Chapters 47–48 and 84)

The yellow-tag scheme

During the second academy test, Yuchan defeats instructors and hoards four yellow tags, using them to build a faction around only the strongest cadets. When Ha Ilming's ambush leaves Bakgi wounded, Yuchan appears to rescue him and then renews his recruitment offer. The rescue is part of a broader manipulation: Yuchan had arranged for weaker cadets to attack Bakgi, steal the tag, and place him in enough danger that Yuchan could intervene as a benefactor. He promises the attackers a tag while expecting that a single reward will divide them against one another. (Chapters 62–65 and 71–73)

Yeowun's group exposes the arrangement and turns the disposable cadets against Yuchan. Disguised as an injured subordinate, Yeowun lets Yuchan believe the plot succeeded. Yuchan's immediate response is to prepare to sever the unconscious victim's wrist tendons so that Yeowun cannot use sword arts for a time—only to discover the substitution after beginning the strike. The deception forces the hidden conflict into a public confrontation. (Chapters 72–77)

Defeat and expulsion

Yuchan initially dominates their duel with superior cultivation and the Blade of Illusion. Believing Yeowun's plain opening movements to be an inferior variation of the Seven Demon Sword, he wagers all four tags and promises to cut off Yeowun's right arm within five formations; in return, he demands Yeowun's tag and Bakgi's service. The supposed weak movement unfolds into a twenty-four-part counter formation. Yuchan cannot advance beyond his fourth and fifth blade sequences, and Yeowun redirects the final strike from his neck to his right arm, severing the limb on which Yuchan's blade training depends. Yuchan keeps his promise and surrenders the tags before collapsing from blood loss. He attempts to retrain the Seven Demon Sword with his left hand, but the short interval before the third test is not enough to rebuild the required coordination, and he fails. He is subsequently counted among the princes expelled from the academy. His fall does not erase his early ability; later heirs remember Yuchan and Chun Kungwun as the rivals they once considered most dangerous, illustrating how rapidly Yeowun displaced the expected succession field. Appearance and personality

The corpus supplies little stable physical description beyond Yuchan's bright smile and his later missing right arm. He presents himself as relaxed, humorous, and almost brotherly, and his admiration for excellent blade work appears sincere. Beneath that ease, however, he is proud, calculating, and willing to maim people who reject his authority. He values hard work and keeps a formal wager after losing, but extends that honor selectively; cadets without exceptional talent are pieces he expects to use and discard.

Cultivation and blade qi

Yuchan reaches the upper end of the master level while still a cadet and possesses enough internal energy to shape blade qi around his bare hand and forearm. That condensed qi functions as an edge without a physical weapon: it can leave a clean cut in the ground, threaten tendons, or contest an opponent's sword qi directly. His speed and power let him overwhelm Ha Ilming or several lesser cadets in only a few movements. The technique's practical limitation is later made explicit—his habits and formations are built primarily around the right arm, so losing it sharply reduces his combat effectiveness. Blade of Illusion

The Blade of Illusion is described as one of the Demonic Cult's three greatest blade arts. Yuchan channels blade qi through its formations to generate a rapid, storm-like sequence intended to seize the initiative and cut through an opponent before they can complete a response. Against ordinary Seven Demon Sword forms, his deep study lets him recognize expected weaknesses and he believes he can sever an arm within three to five exchanges. Against Yeowun's concealed counter art, that confidence becomes a trap: the apparently plain entry changes after contact, denies Yuchan an opening to progress into his fifth formation, and turns his own forward pressure into exposure. Seven Demon Sword and formation work

Yuchan also learns the Seven Demon Sword for academy requirements and attempts to coordinate the Sword Demon formation with twelve teammates. Merely performing the same movement in unison does not produce the formation's intended effect, showing that synchronized shapes alone are insufficient without understanding how the members' energies and positions interact. After losing his right arm, he tries to relearn the sword with his left hand but cannot achieve test-ready proficiency in the available time. (Chapters 76 and 96)

Observation and tactical reading

Yuchan can infer an injured rib from minute inconsistencies in an opponent's step, arm tension, and finger balance. He also notices when Yeowun anticipates an attack before it begins. This perception makes him a strong evaluator of conventional movement, but it is not omniscience. He mistakes Yeowun's counter formation for a modified Seven Demon Sword and therefore applies the wrong set of assumptions to it, demonstrating that accurate observation still depends on correctly identifying the underlying art. Recruitment and manipulation

As a faction leader, Yuchan identifies high-value martial talent, hoards scarce test resources, and constructs layered bargains designed to make recruitment appear voluntary. His Bakgi scheme combines a staged threat, a timely rescue, and a deliberately inadequate reward meant to split the hired cadets afterward. It fails because he treats weaker followers as predictable pieces; once they understand that they are expendable, Yeowun and Ko Wanghur can reverse the same arrangement against him.
