Bookkeeper's Book

Bookkeeper's Book is the record through which the werewolves' neutral Bookkeeper preserves the office's legacy and marks a secret apprentice as successor. It is described, rather than physically displayed, when Galdark explains the role to the Howlers. The Bookkeeper also carries inherited history in memory, so the book is one part of a knowledge system rather than a demonstrated magical object that contains every secret by itself. (Chapter 1518)

History

The record of a neutral office

After the war between Gary Dem and Lupus, Galdark joins the Howlers and explains that Bookkeepers outlast individual Alphas, teaching history, law, and werewolf tradition without taking sides in Alpha disputes. Each Bookkeeper secretly trains an apprentice. When succession arrives, the incumbent brings forth the book holding the legacy and identifies the apprentice as the next officeholder. The corpus gives no earlier owner-by-owner chain, maker, date of creation, binding, or storage place. (Chapter 1518)

The office begins with Jack's decision in the old world to establish a “bookkeeper of sorts” so future werewolves will remember the curse and how to oppose Unzoku. Galdark later dies while protecting Lupus during the renewed conflict. Lupus orders that the next Bookkeeper be informed of the duties immediately, trusting Galdark to have prepared that succession. The text does not show the physical book changing hands in either scene, so transfer to the unnamed apprentice remains institutional rather than a witnessed custody event. (Chapters 1711, 1807)

Knowledge reserved for Alpha succession

The final storyline shows why the Bookkeeper tradition matters even when the physical volume is absent. After Xin reveals her pregnancy, Lupus writes Gary that some information is shared only from Bookkeeper to Alpha: a Luna carrying an Alpha's child progressively loses supernatural power and may have almost none near birth. Lupus says he will send the next Bookkeeper to the Howlers, but sends the warning by letter in case of delay. The warning belongs to the Bookkeeper knowledge tradition; the letter is not shown as a page from the book, and the corpus does not establish that the pregnancy rule is physically written in it. Abilities and properties

• The book holds the legacy used to recognize and instruct the next Bookkeeper. Its contents are historical and institutional; no supernatural power, self-writing mechanism, or indestructibility is demonstrated. (Chapter 1518)
• Bookkeepers supplement the written record with memories and oral instruction from predecessors. This creates redundancy, but also allows stories to change or details to be lost over generations, one reason Jack leaves the medallion as a separate record of the Unzoku crisis. (Chapters 1518, 1713)
• Access is restricted by office and rank. Some traditions are passed privately from Bookkeeper to Alpha rather than shared with ordinary pack members. (Chapter 1849)
• The physical book is never described in detail or used in combat. Its current condition, number of volumes, and exact custody after Galdark's death are unknown. (Chapters 1518, 1807)
