Shingi

Shingi is one of the AFA's top students preparing for an AFC debut. His confidence is unsettled by the unusually strong incoming class, but the experience also exposes the caution and work ethic beneath his dismissive first impression.

Biography

A top student challenged by the new intake

Shingi initially judges Gary Dem's incoming group as weak, although he is more careful than Ryan and reminds his teammate to investigate rather than dismiss them outright. In his own test fight, seeing Gary's earlier strength makes him second-guess every opening against Ian. Ian's concealed bristles wound Shingi when hesitation gives way to an overcommitted punch, so Shingi abandons the agreement to remain human and transforms, ending the fight with a long-range arm strike. He wins but regards needing the transformation against a newcomer as embarrassing and recognizes that his mentality still requires work. Later, Eddy finds him training for hours despite instructions to rest, and Shingi helps send Gary and Xin on their arranged date before returning to the AFA routine. (Chapters 408–418 and 514–515)

Appearance and personality

Shingi is a male student with thick, black curly hair that he habitually twirls. He can sound condescending toward lower-ranked students, but he is not blindly arrogant: he warns Ryan against carelessness, notices danger before his peers, and judges his own performance harshly. His prolonged solo training shows ambition strong enough to become counterproductive when he neglects recovery. (Chapters 408–418 and 514)

Powers and abilities

Stretch-limbed Altered form

Shingi can transform his arms into extremely long, fast-extending limbs. From the far side of a cage, he stretches an arm quickly enough to seize Ian's head and slam him unconscious before Ian can regain his footing. The form also displays the general recovery of an Altered, with puncture wounds beginning to heal after the match. Its full animal basis, acquisition, maximum reach, and complete transformation are not explained. The demonstrated attack depends on a clear line and surprise; Shingi resorts to it after Ian's bristles counter ordinary punches. (Chapters 412–413)

AFC-level striking and training

Even without transforming, Shingi has strong punches, defensive timing, and enough durability to continue after Ian's bristles pierce his hand and arm. His caution allows him to avoid early traps but also disrupts his normal offense, while overtraining creates a separate risk that Eddy explicitly warns him about. (Chapters 412–413 and 514)

Relationships

  • Ian: Ian's persistence and bristle defense force Shingi to transform during a match he expected to control. Shingi wins, but treats the need to escalate as evidence of his own weakness. (Chapters 412–414)
  • Gary Dem: Gary's concealed strength makes Shingi wary before they directly face one another, and Gary's later performance confirms that caution. Shingi subsequently trains beside him under Eddy's supervision. (Chapters 408–418, 502, and 514–515)
  • Eddy: Eddy is Shingi's coach and criticizes both his unnecessary transformation and his refusal to rest, framing discipline and recovery as part of professional preparation. (Chapters 413 and 514)
