Professor Humfree

Professor Humfree is one of the three senior professors who run the Altered Fighting Academy's daily operations. He helps select, test, and monitor exceptional students, balancing an institution built around dangerous competition against his responsibility to protect people such as Gary Dem and Numba.

Biography

Testing talent in a dangerous academy

Humfree first appears judging applicants with Professors Hai and Wood. When Xin Clove survives a preliminary trial through ruthless improvisation, he argues that the rules should be corrected later but that she should advance and prove whether she belongs. He applies the same pragmatic judgment to Gary and Numba: Humfree rebukes wealthy candidates for mocking Numba, recognizes Gary's transformation control and combat awareness, and designs assessments where trust, betrayal, and composure matter alongside physical power. Gary disrupts the elimination format, but Humfree convenes the staff rather than mechanically enforcing a result that would discard promising students. (Chapters 322 and 360–370)

The academy's harsh model later permits a corrupted supervisor to poison Gary, Ian, and Izzy. Humfree helps uncover the cover-up, enters the aftermath, and apologizes directly for the academy's failure. He asks Gary not to seek revenge, but offers concrete protection in return: the professors conceal the werewolf-like feeding they witnessed and admit Gary into the real AFA. Humfree continues to watch Gary's growth, grants leave to students drawn into Numba's crisis, and recognizes the Howlers' rapid expansion as evidence that Gary is outgrowing the academy's normal path. (Chapters 393–403, 521, and 573)

Humfree also represents the AFA in its uneasy partnership with NIRV. He objects when NIRV uses an untested resurrected beast, arranges student rewards, and infers that Gary eats beast bodies to grow, yet he honors the student's request for privacy. When Crowley assaults James to stop a lethal lesson, Humfree and the other professors protect Gary from NIRV retaliation but cannot preserve Crowley's job. His last direct role leaves him alive at the AFA, constrained by organizations above him but still trying to limit the consequences for students and teachers. (Chapters 432–439, 499, and 604)

Appearance and personality

Humfree is an older, bespectacled man with a beard that he often strokes while thinking. His office resembles a library, with books covering both sides of the room. The corpus varies the spelling of his surname among Humfree, Humfrey, and Humphrey. (Chapters 322, 360, and 521)

He is stern, analytical, and comfortable making difficult discretionary decisions. Humfree accepts that AFA training contains genuine danger, but he is not indifferent to corruption or needless experimentation. His methods can be paternalistic—he negotiates secrecy and restraint rather than giving Gary full control over the response—yet he takes institutional responsibility when the academy fails.

Powers and abilities

Unexplained intimidation aura

When an applicant challenges the professors' authority, dark fog-like energy rises behind Humfree with what appears to be a pair of eyes. Nearby students instinctively retreat, while the candidates he ultimately selects remain in place. The scene establishes an intimidation effect but does not identify its origin, activation method, duration, or whether it is an Altered ability, Qi, killing intent, or visualized pressure. No transformed form or direct combat application is shown, so its mechanics and latest strength remain unknown. (Chapter 361)

Evaluation and administration

Humfree evaluates transformation control, combat instincts, judgment, and social pressure rather than relying only on a candidate's sponsor or raw strength. He redesigns an assessment when Gary makes its normal outcome meaningless, monitors the probationary facility, places academy observers where corruption is suspected, and mediates leave, promotions, NIRV cooperation, and disciplinary crises. These abilities depend on information and institutional access; powerful sponsors and NIRV's funding can overrule what he believes is best. (Chapters 360–403, 432–439, 521, and 604)

Relationships

Gary Dem

Humfree sees Gary as an unusually gifted student whose instincts repeatedly expose weaknesses in AFA systems. He protects Gary's secret and opportunity while also steering him toward compromises designed to preserve the academy.

Professors Hai and Wood

Hai and Wood are Humfree's fellow senior administrators. The three debate admissions and discipline but act collectively when corruption, NIRV, or a student's future threatens the academy.

Crowley

Humfree respects Crowley's commitment to student safety and helps protect Gary after Crowley's confrontation with James. He cannot prevent NIRV from forcing the teacher out, illustrating the limit of the professors' authority.

Items

Humfree uses academy records, assessment systems, cameras, and office materials, but none is established as a signature personal possession. He has no finalized notable item in the supplied inventory.
