Kirk

Kirk Summerfield is an AFC rookie champion, the Altered leader of the Underdogs' Cheetah Squad, and Gary Dem's early fighting idol. He tries to use a violent position to protect people and atone for those he hurts, but loyalty to Damion places him against the Howlers. Gary fatally wounds him before either understands that Kirk had intended to hide him from Damion.

Biography

Champion, mentor, and Underdog

Kirk wins an Altered rookie tournament by using his cheetah speed and strength against a frog-based opponent, making him a public figure whom Gary admires. The Underdogs sponsor his Altered career, and inside their nightclub he is important enough to bend ordinary gang rules. He treats Gary more gently than the other members do and gives him a private boxing lesson after mistaking his broken nose for evidence of bullying. Gary's technically correct but weak punches disappoint Kirk, yet the lesson supplies the basic jab and straight mechanics Gary later uses to survive. (Chapters 1–4)

When Slough's colour-gang violence reaches Gary's mother's supermarket, Kirk and the Cheetah Squad defeat the attackers. He partially transforms while punishing Gil, condemning the teenager for torturing weaker people and then begging when confronted by someone stronger. Kirk rescues the surviving civilians, organizes medical and cleanup responses, and refuses their gratitude by acknowledging that his gang could just as easily have been their attacker. Although he is searching for Gary on Damion's orders, his warning that teenagers should leave the business and his later confession show that he intends to find and hide Gary rather than deliver him. Atonement and the fatal misunderstanding

Damion later sends Kirk's squad to cripple a Grey Elephants factory. Kirk obeys, leaving workers and gang members maimed and the facility burning, but privately keeps a count of those he hurts and wonders whether saving others can ever balance his sins. During the gang war, he fights the apparent wolf Altered leading the Howlers without knowing it is Gary. Kirk's speed and technique badly injure him, but Gary's full transformation absorbs a momentum-based strike and allows Gary to inflict a mortal wound. Once unmasked, Gary apologizes and explains the lost package; Kirk recognizes that he acted for survival, reveals his plan to protect him, and dies without blaming him. Gary cannot convert an Altered with the Alpha Bite and consumes part of Kirk's body in grief, carrying the resulting strength and Kirk's memory into later conflicts. (Chapters 286–307)

Appearance and personality

Kirk is a muscular adult man with black hair spiked on top and cut short at the sides, a small goatee, and the build of a professional fighter. His public AFC outfit includes an iconic red suit, while gang operations place him in a black suit with a yellow-spotted tie for the Cheetah Squad. Partial transformation yellows his skin, produces black spots and patches of facial and arm fur, lengthens his nails into claws, and gives his eyes a large-cat appearance. (Chapters 1, 94–106)

He is good-humored and encouraging with Gary, but capable of extreme violence under Underdog orders. Kirk despises bullies and wants his strength to save people, even while recognizing that his own gang can victimize the same civilians. Keeping a tally of those he harms reveals sustained guilt rather than innocence; his tragedy is that private atonement never leads him to leave Damion before the gang war makes his roles irreconcilable.

Powers and abilities

Cheetah Altered form

Kirk is a manufactured Altered based on a cheetah-like ancient beast. The Underdogs sponsor his career, but the corpus does not explain when he received the solution, its exact source, or why he accepted it; in his final moments, he says he wishes he had never become Altered. He can transform selected regions in less than a second, extending claws and fur or changing only his lower legs for speed without damaging the rest of his clothing. Speed is his defining advantage. Kirk outruns fleeing gang members, repeatedly crosses a battlefield before opponents can respond, and converts a low sprint into punches powered by his entire body's momentum. The form does not make him inexhaustible: prolonged high-speed exchanges leave him controlling his breathing and trying to recover his wind. Professional combat technique

Kirk's AFC success also depends on learned boxing, footwork, timing, and tactical experience rather than transformation alone. He teaches Gary correct guarding, hip rotation, and the snapping motion of a jab, and he changes angles and attack patterns when Gary begins reading him. His technique lets him threaten opponents who can withstand individual blows, but it cannot overcome the large gap in Gary's transformed endurance and mass during their final exchange. Relationships

Gary Dem

Gary begins as Kirk's enthusiastic fan and informal student, while Kirk sees a good teenager trapped in a violent trade. Their concealed identities turn mutual concern into a fatal fight. Kirk's forgiveness deepens Gary's guilt, and Gary continues to remember him as both an ideal of skilled fighting and one of the absent friends he wishes had survived.

Damion

Damion's organization finances Kirk's Altered status and gives him public opportunity, but also directs the violence Kirk comes to regret. Kirk remains valuable enough to exercise discretion and secretly plans to protect Gary, yet he never openly breaks with Damion before being sent into the last war.

Gil

Kirk rescues civilians from Gil and reacts strongly to the teenager's abuse of weaker victims. He defeats, interrogates, and takes Gil into Underdog custody, beginning the forced gang service that shapes Gil's later grievance. Kirk's moral anger is genuine even though the organization enforcing the lesson is itself predatory.
