Gil

Gil is a Westbridge rugby player whose bullying conflict with Gary Dem expands into a succession of gang affiliations and an obsessive revenge campaign. After the Underdogs force him into service, he leaves Slough with Raven, joins the Phoenix Gang, and accepts an infected Mythical solution. His Anubis form makes him powerful enough to threaten the Howlers' core, but his refusal to relinquish his grievance ends with Gary killing him in a hospital bed.

Biography

School violence and forced gang service

Gil is physically gifted but uses his place on the rugby team and in the colour gangs to intimidate weaker students. He and his friend attack Tom after Gary earns a place on the team, then Gil helps cause the supermarket violence that leaves Gary's mother critically injured. The Underdogs' Altered, Kirk, stops him from doing worse and defeats his gang. Damion subsequently forces Gil and other captured youths to become transporters, putting him inside the same organization that Gary fled. Gil complies from fear rather than loyalty, but later carries out Damion's effort to find Gary and continues to treat cruelty as a way to recover status. (Chapters 26–214, 278–292)

When the Howlers destroy both the Grey Elephants and Underdogs, Gil has lost his gang, school future, and family support—his parents had already abandoned him after repeated trouble. He leaves with Raven, and the two turn their common hatred of Gary into a route upward through the Phoenix Gang. They volunteer for body disposal and other undesirable jobs, train together, and supply Sin with intelligence about Slough. Sin rewards them with infected Mythical solutions. Gil accepts the risk, helps attack Notsburg, and later targets Xin Clove because hurting people important to Gary has become more important than confronting Gary himself. Phoenix defeat and death

Gil returns to Slough as part of the Phoenix invasion and is captured after fighting Austin and the defenders near the hospital. When Gary questions him, Gil admits that the supermarket attack was random rather than retaliation and expresses disappointment that Gary's mother survived. He explains that he and Raven joined Phoenix to destroy everything Gary cared about, then begins transforming and threatens Gary's family again. Gary kills him by tearing through his throat and cutting his neck, deciding that leaving him alive would preserve the danger. Gil dies still framing himself as Gary's victim, without accepting that his own attack on Tom began their conflict. (Chapters 899–933)

Appearance and personality

Gil is a large, athletic young man whose natural strength and agility come from rugby. By the Phoenix attack he has bright blond hair brushed back with gel, a rough young-adult face, and bags beneath his eyes. His Anubis form roughly doubles his size and gives him dark-purple skin, a long jackal snout, a large black nose, and fierce eyes. (Chapters 26–214, 789–790)

He is bullying, resentful, and highly sensitive to humiliation. Gil repeatedly treats fear of Gary as proof that Gary is a monster, while ignoring his own attacks on people unable to resist. He can work hard and adapt when Phoenix offers advancement, but discipline never becomes self-reflection; each loss is added to the grievance that someone else ruined his life.

Powers and abilities

Mythical Anubis form

Gil receives an infected Mythical Altered solution from Sin after proving useful to Phoenix. The resulting form resembles Anubis: it greatly increases his size, striking force, durability, and jumping ability. A two-handed blow dents the street, shakes nearby structures, and shatters shop windows, while ordinary Anti-Altered electrical bolts fail to slow him. Purple energy reinforcement

Gil can concentrate a dark-purple energy around different parts of his transformed body. Spread across his skin, it hardens him enough to stop Xin's electrified punch and Kai's claws. Relationships

Gary Dem

Gil makes Gary a target after a school rivalry, then interprets every consequence of his own violence as further persecution. Gary initially wants an explanation and learns that his mother's injury was not a calculated strike against him. Gil's pleasure in her suffering and renewed threat against the family remove any possibility of mercy.

Raven

Raven gives Gil a partner and direction after the collapse of Slough's old gangs. They train, serve Phoenix, accept related infected solutions, and coordinate revenge. Raven eventually negotiates an exit; Gil's refusal to stop makes their otherwise parallel stories end differently.

Xin Clove and Kai

Gil attacks Xin as a proxy for Gary, underestimating both her AFC power and the Howlers' response. Xin's electricity tests the limits of his defense, while Kai's shifting wolf forms match his enhanced speed. Their intervention prevents him from completing the attack and exposes that raw Mythical power is not enough against coordinated opponents.
