Damion

Damion Hawk is the leader of the Underdogs and the man whose smuggling operation inadvertently creates Gary Dem. He rules Slough through extortion, violence, and an Altered-backed criminal network, then becomes the personal target of both Gary and his estranged son, Kai. Damion remains human, but his paired beast-weapon axes let him injure werewolves well beyond an ordinary fighter's reach.

Biography

The Underdogs and the missing package

Damion runs the Basement nightclub as the Underdogs' public front and keeps young transporters obedient through fear. He is introduced joking about cutting off Gary's toe, a threat Gary cannot dismiss after seeing him mutilate his own men. Damion assigns five couriers separate locked cases so that only one carries the real contraband. Gary receives the moving case, loses its contents during an attack, and becomes a werewolf; Damion's determination to recover the package consequently turns a disposable employee into the enemy who will dismantle his organization. (Chapters 3–4, 22–219)

As Slough's smaller gangs organize against him, Damion answers pressure with the methods that built his authority: coerced recruits, surveillance, an Altered strike force, and Anti-Altered weapons. During the crazed-Altered attack he protects only the Underdogs' central territory, kills a subordinate for reporting information he already knows, and personally enters the street with his axes. He survives waves that destroy much of his gang, but the violence also exposes how dependent his regime is on fear and specialized equipment. Gary's Howlers exploit the collapse, eliminate Damion's remaining bases, and inherit most of the criminal property he had accumulated. (Chapters 195, 250–354)

Kai's revenge

Damion's conflict with Kai is rooted in his family rather than ordinary gang succession. Kai later reveals that Damion treated him as a replacement for his favored son Simon and beat Kai's mother Eleanor to death after she killed Simon to protect Kai. When Damion captures Gary and Kai, Kai accepts Gary's bite so that he can take revenge himself. Damion initially dominates their duel through greater experience and the axes' power, but Gary and Olivia strip the weapons away. Kai then overwhelms his unarmed father and cuts his throat. Damion dies still blaming Eleanor and Kai, while his death ends the Underdogs' rule without giving Kai the emotional relief he expected. (Chapters 341–352)

Appearance and personality

Damion wears the suits favored by the Underdogs, most notably a purple one, but his black mohawk, round earring in his right ear, and wild expression make the respectable presentation unconvincing. Gary first reads his eyes as those of a madman. In battle Damion removes the suit for mobility and fights with evident enjoyment. (Chapters 3, 285, 292)

He is ruthless, volatile, and possessive. Damion uses cruelty as management, killing or maiming subordinates to preserve fear, yet he can think strategically enough to use decoy deliveries, sponsor an Altered, and equip his inner circle against stronger enemies. Family never restrains that worldview: once Kai tries to kill him, Damion treats his son as another opponent to be skinned. His final exchange shows the central failure behind his authority—he understands loyalty as control and never accepts responsibility for the violence that created Kai's rebellion.

Powers and abilities

Combat skill and physical conditioning

Damion is an experienced human fighter with fast reactions, strong close-range technique, and enough conditioning to kill crazed Altereds when armed. Even after losing his axes, he evades and blocks several of Kai's attacks and adjusts his tactics during their duel. He has no demonstrated Altered serum, werewolf physiology, or supernatural transformation; his exceptional damage against powered opponents is tied chiefly to his weapons. (Chapters 285, 292, 347–351)

Paired beast-weapon axes

Damion's signature weapons are two short red-based axes with scaled handles and pale, bone-like heads. He can throw them accurately, use them in rapid combinations, and draw more power from them as his excitement rises. Their edges sever crazed-Altered limbs, penetrate Kai's werewolf hide, damage bone, and strike hard enough to crack the ground. Unlike ordinary Underdogs wielding captured Anti-Altered gear, Damion is explicitly able to draw out the axes' special energy. The corpus does not explain how he acquired them, what beast produced them, or the exact activation mechanism. (Chapters 285, 292, 347–350)

The axes do not make him invincible. Gary can physically hold both weapons immobile, Olivia's whip can restrain Damion, and losing the axes removes the advantage that kept Kai on the defensive. One red-based axe later passes into Innu's equipment, confirming that Damion's power was portable rather than innate. (Chapters 350–352, 1144–1158)

Relationships

Kai

Kai is Damion's son and intended successor after Simon's death. Damion interprets Kai's talent and ambition as proof that they are alike, while Kai understands the comparison as another attempt to erase his mother and excuse Simon. Their final duel resolves the gang succession but not Kai's grief: Kai kills Damion and immediately discovers that revenge cannot restore the family Damion destroyed.

Gary Dem

Gary begins as one of Damion's frightened teenage couriers. The lost package makes Gary both a target and, through the werewolf power it contained, the person capable of replacing the Underdogs. Gary lets Kai deliver the final blow but helps disarm Damion and builds the Howlers' control of Slough from the assets left behind.

Items

Damion's paired red beast-weapon axes are his signature equipment. They survive his death and at least one later enters Innu's possession, but they have no finalized standalone item page in the supplied inventory.
