Earny

Earny is an older miner trapped in the Scavengers' factory system and the father of Killer. His generosity toward disguised newcomers helps convince Gary Dem that rescuing the workers matters as much as obtaining the factory's beast crystals.

Biography

Factory exploitation and escape to Slough

Earny trains Gary and Elijah in the mine, where workers must meet quotas, sleep in crowded on-site rooms, and stretch wages that barely feed their families. Despite having little food and a son to support, Earny divides his meal with Gary because he treats fellow workers as family. He also explains how the Scavengers turned development into a closed system: their gangs recruit children, their factories trap adults, and workers lack the money or power to leave. When Scavenger enforcers punish the workforce, Earny is whipped and injured, strengthening Gary's decision to evacuate them rather than simply steal crystals. (Chapters 695–703 and 719–720)

Gary and the Howlers offer the workers housing, safer employment, and transport to Slough. Earny accepts, helps Kai locate the Phantom Brawl through his son, and reunites with Killer outside the arena, learning that the boy has been involved with the same gang system Earny wanted him to escape. Father and son leave together and choose to remain in Slough, where the relocated workers receive apartments and a path outside the factories. (Chapters 744–756)

Appearance and personality

Earny is a thin older man with well-defined muscles built through years of physical labor; he wears a hard hat in the mine. He is patient, generous, and openly proud of his son, although long separations caused by factory life leave him unaware of Killer's gang activity. His trust in Gary grows from witnessed protection rather than blind optimism. (Chapters 695–703 and 744–756)

Powers and abilities

Earny is an ordinary human with no demonstrated supernatural power or Altered transformation. Years of mining give him practical strength, endurance, and knowledge of crystal extraction, but he describes himself as too weak to be useful to the gangs and cannot resist armed Scavenger enforcers. His most consequential skills are his knowledge of the city's labor system and his connections to workers and Killer, which help the Howlers organize the evacuation. (Chapters 695–703 and 719–756)

Relationships

  • Killer: Earny loves and financially supports his son but sees him rarely because he lives at the factory. Their reunion exposes Killer's hidden gang life, and both choose the safer future offered in Slough. (Chapters 698, 744–756)
  • Gary Dem: Earny's generosity and abuse by the factory enforcers personalize the city's exploitation for Gary. Gary repays the meal by protecting Earny and relocating his family and coworkers. (Chapters 695–720 and 744–756)
  • Elijah: Elijah works beside Earny undercover and helps Gary understand how much the shared food costs the miners. (Chapters 695–703)
