Broodie

Broodie is a shield-bearing werewolf warrior of Lupus's pack and a former Ironfang leader. His thick hide, battlefield awareness, and regenerating beast-gear shield let him contest elite hunters, but two retreats cost him status and turn the Slough invasion into a chance for redemption that ends when Austin destroys the shield faster than it can reform.

Biography

An Ironfang leader forced to retreat

Broodie commands werewolves defending the Botanical Garden when Trixie and Kim attack. He uses Kim's inhuman resilience to expose her as a Wight and pressure Trixie's distrust, but the argument does not prevent the pair from continuing to fight him. The battle changes when Midwak and Kai intervene. Broodie knows Midwak from their time as talented rivals in the old pack and initially welcomes the chance to prove the Ironfangs surpassed him; after seeing Kai rapidly kill Ivy, however, he abandons the duel and escapes through the forest. The retreat saves his life but later costs him his Ironfang position. (Chapters 1267–1273 and 1492)

A failed bid for redemption in Slough

Broodie joins the full-moon invasion of Slough expecting to settle the old rivalry with Midwak, but is assigned to fight Austin. He first uses his shield and close-range speed to pressure an exhausted opponent while Lupus's army attacks the city. When Austin concentrates every strike on the shield, its surface fractures and shatters before it can regenerate from the handle. Broodie runs toward the surrounding werewolves, acknowledging that victory was supposed to restore his rank, but Austin portals into his path and drives a horned fist through his heart. Austin later takes the handle, and its regenerated blade protects the Howlers, turning Broodie's defining weapon against the pack he was trying to rejoin. (Chapters 1409, 1452–1493)

Appearance and personality

Broodie is chiefly shown in a large werewolf form with claws, powerful legs, and unusually thick hide. His human appearance is not described in enough detail to establish age, hair, or build. He is boastful and competitive, especially with Midwak, but capable of tactical withdrawal when Kai or Austin changes the odds. His attempts to frame enemies as hypocrites show perceptiveness, while his retreat and later redemption bid reveal how strongly rank within Lupus's pack governs his choices. Werewolf physiology and combat skill

Broodie has werewolf strength, speed, claws, senses, and thick hide. Trixie's piercing weapon leaves only shallow wounds, and heavy strikes from Kim and Midwak stagger rather than stop him. He can sense an attack approaching from behind, block while fighting another opponent, kick a human hunter across a bridge, and tear off and throw his fingernails as projectiles. He is described as a warrior whose strength rivals any Ironfang, but Kai's arrival makes him retreat and Austin's raw power ultimately surpasses his durability. (Chapters 1267–1273 and 1491–1493)

Regenerating beast-gear shield

Broodie's round shield blocks heavy punches and projected claw energy while its vibrating rim functions as a razor edge. It can be thrown, embed in a target, and return to use once recovered. Repeated impacts charge the edge with stored energy, increasing the force of a cutting counterattack. When the body is shattered, the handle can regenerate the shield, but reconstruction takes time; Austin exploits that delay after methodically breaking the surface. The weapon does not nullify impact transferred into Broodie's arm, which goes numb under repeated blows, and its edge can be intercepted by sufficiently durable horns. Relationships

• Midwak: Broodie and Midwak were talented rivals before the Ironfangs existed. Broodie treats Midwak's new pack as betrayal and promises a future duel, but Kai's strength makes him abandon their first renewed contest. (Chapters 1270–1272 and 1409)
• Austin: Broodie sees Austin as the opponent through whom he can regain status. Austin targets the shield rather than its wielder, destroys it, pursues Broodie's retreat through a portal, and kills him with a strike through the heart. (Chapters 1452–1493)
• Kim and Trixie: Broodie exposes Kim's Wight nature to destabilize the hunters' cooperation. Trixie continues fighting beside Kim despite the revelation, preventing Broodie from converting knowledge into an easy victory. (Chapters 1267–1273)
