Sin Mutav
Sin Mutav is the public-facing King of the Phoenix Gang and a Mythical phoenix-type Altered. Unlike other Kings who rule from concealment, he makes terror part of his authority, personally displays his fire powers, and treats whole cities as expendable demonstrations. His campaign against the Howlers culminates in the destruction of Slough and a battle in which his pride prevents retreat even after Gary Dem discovers the limits of his regeneration.
Biography
The Phoenix King and Slough's stolen package
Sin enters Slough to recover a missing package through the Grey Elephants. When their leaders resist the cost of fighting the Underdogs, he melts one man's face with his bare hand and supplies the gang with an experimental black Altered syringe, making coercive power and manufactured soldiers substitutes for patience. His national reputation follows the same method: after a Tier-2 gang refuses to return stolen property, he destroys it in a day, nearly burns its city, and has the event filmed. That spectacle gives the Phoenix Gang leverage beyond its direct territory and explains why Sin can remain unusually public without inviting an attack from the other Kings. (Chapters 111–112 and 451)
Escalating from grievance to invasion
Sin later accepts Raven and Gil, whose hatred of Gary gives the Phoenix Gang local knowledge and willing agents. He watches the Howlers' rise, treats their survival and refusal to submit as an insult, and eventually places a broad bounty on the gang while attacks wear down its people and businesses. When Gary is imprisoned, Sin commits his main force to Slough, allowing subordinates to devastate the city before appearing personally once he believes its strongest defenders have been exhausted. The strategy protects his own image if the army succeeds, but it also gives Kai, Innu, Blake, and Midwak time to eliminate much of the force before Sin reaches the center of the battle. (Chapters 451–589 and 772–916)
Pride, dismemberment, and death
Sin overwhelms the wounded Howlers with heat, flight, ranged fire, and regeneration, then meets a Gary strengthened by the prison Sin helped send him to. Gary initially loses health and energy merely by remaining near him. The battle changes when repeated claw attacks sever Sin's arm: attached wounds heal, but the missing limb does not regrow, and consuming it restores Gary while granting fire resistance. Gary repeats the process with Sin's leg and wing. Sin could still attempt to fly away, but refuses because retreat would contradict his identity as a King. With his flames weakening and his healing compromised by lost mass, he makes a final charge; Gary tears through his fire, drives claws into his head, and kills him as a warning to the remaining Kings. (Chapters 917–920)
Appearance and personality
Sin is introduced as a lean man with long red hair tied back, a feminine-looking face, and a giant phoenix-emblem overcoat. Later appearances emphasize a flamboyant red coat with white fur and an appearance designed to attract attention. In combat he exposes a muscular torso while red, heat-glowing feathers and flames form across his transformed body. He is theatrical, cruel, and intensely proud. Publicity is not incidental to his violence; he uses it to make obedience precede his arrival, then becomes trapped by the same reputation when survival would require retreat. (Chapters 111–112, 451, and 903–920)
Powers and abilities
Phoenix-type Altered physiology
Sin's manufactured Altered form is based on a Mythical phoenix, though the corpus does not identify the treatment or exact ancient DNA source. Even in human form he radiates enough heat to sear the ground, ignite a cigarette without contact, and kill by melting flesh. Transformation produces red feathers, a body wrapped in fire, and small flaming wings. His baseline strength lets him restrain other gang leaders, while flame propulsion raises his speed to a level that can pressure Gary in full transformation. (Chapters 111–112 and 917–920)
Fire generation, defense, and flight
Sin surrounds himself with a flame barrier that intercepts projected Qi attacks and can melt or catch physical weapons after they penetrate. He projects fireballs and streams, turns his arms into flame-heavy strikes, raises a tornado from beneath a target, and can expand his output into a pillar or wide blast. His wings support aerial maneuvering and rocket-like charges; from altitude he can dive like a meteor, creating a city-block-scale shock and spreading secondary fires. The heat aura is itself offensive, continuously draining Gary's health and energy before physical contact. Fire resistance, distance, or sufficiently strong attacks that strip away the flames counter parts of this defense. (Chapters 903–920)
Regeneration and limits
Cuts and other wounds close while the damaged tissue remains attached, making ordinary attrition ineffective. Severed limbs do not regrow, however, and losing an arm, leg, and wing reduces both Sin's mobility and his ability to sustain his flames. Gary also demonstrates an opponent-specific counter by consuming the severed phoenix tissue: each portion restores energy and increases heat resistance until Sin's passive aura and fire attacks lose their decisive advantage. Sin's refusal to retreat is psychological rather than mechanical, but in his final fight it is as limiting as any physical weakness. (Chapters 917–920)
Gang command and intimidation
Sin leads one of the country's Tier-1 gangs, recruits displaced enemies of the Howlers, distributes experimental Altered material, and coordinates a campaign through bounties, subordinate forces, and public terror. His approach produces rapid compliance but poor correction when prestige and reality diverge; he joins the Slough battle only after his army is defeated and still assumes rank will compensate for an opponent who has evolved specifically through his actions. (Chapters 111–112, 451–589, and 772–920)
Relationships
- Gary Dem: Sin treats Gary first as an obstacle connected to his missing package and later as a gang leader who must be publicly crushed. Sending him to prison instead gives Gary the endurance and techniques needed to survive Sin's heat, while Sin's body becomes the source of Gary's lasting fire resistance and attribute. (Chapters 111–112, 772–920)
- Raven and Gil: Sin absorbs the two displaced Slough gang members because their desire for revenge aligns with his campaign. They provide motivated subordinates, but their grievance also draws Phoenix resources into a conflict Sin underestimates. (Chapter 589 and Chapters 772–916)
