Messick

Messick is a foul-mouthed traveling NPC who helps Zhang Yang oppose Duchess Winst, then signs a Contract Bond to become Han Ying Xue's durable but unreliable Battle Companion. (Chapters 475–480, 501, and 794)

Biography

Inheritances and Territorial War

Messick meets Zhang Yang while traveling near Winst Castle and reveals that he left the region at fifteen to see the world and gather knowledge. Three years before their meeting, he learned that Duchess Winst had executed his parents, both tailors, because they failed to make a dress that satisfied her. His flippant manner gives way to a serious desire for revenge, and he joins Zhang Yang's assault on Winst, using insults to keep her furious and focused on him. After the fight, he discloses the location and operating mechanism of her hidden treasure chamber, then retreats quickly when Felice threatens to burn him again. Zhang Yang recognizes that Messick's high HP, self-healing, and provocation make him unusually suitable as a secondary tank and leaves him available for recruitment rather than treating him as a disposable quest helper. When Zhang Yang's group returns, Messick supplies his own Contract Book and eagerly binds himself to Han Ying Xue. The bond reduces his level to match hers, but he retains his Violet-Platinum quality and level-scaling equipment. He becomes the party's alternate tank, using his durability and Foul Chatters to protect Han Ying Xue and hold monsters while she heals or attacks. His usefulness is tempered by low damage, incessant harassment of the women around him, and a tendency to flee when his own life is threatened, so Han often leaves him unsummoned when Zhang Yang can tank. Even so, Messick later substitutes for Zhang Yang against ordinary monsters and lets Han safely complete a solo Minotaur trial by healing him while applying damage-over-time effects. Appearance and personality

The corpus does not provide a stable physical description for Messick. It instead identifies him through restless fidgeting, a spear, constant whining, and aggressively sexual speech aimed at Han Ying Xue, Wei Yan Er, Felice, and other women. He can become focused when discussing his parents and is willing to confront their killer, but in ordinary party life he is shameless, persistent, and cowardly under serious danger. His comic presentation does not erase the practical consequences of those traits: Han Ying Xue is often disgusted enough to avoid summoning him, while Felice answers his harassment with physical attacks. Abilities and gameplay

Messick is built for attrition rather than damage. On first accompanying Zhang Yang, he can regenerate against an equally strong monster until he outlasts it. His Light of Life heals his burn injuries instantly; during the Winst encounter, his MP pool supports twenty uses that restore about 2.2 million HP in total on top of 1.1 million base HP. Once the skill is exhausted, however, his health falls rapidly, establishing MP and finite casts as hard limits on his self-sustain. He still tanks Winst for nearly seven minutes, longer than Zhang Yang believes he could manage at that point. (Chapters 475–479)

His signature control skill, Foul Chatters, provokes monsters by means of his insults and may also affect ordinary players. That reliable aggro generation makes him useful as a secondary tank or human shield for Han Ying Xue, especially against melee opponents who could otherwise interrupt her casting. His weaknesses are equally explicit: his attack is low, he contributes little when another durable tank is present, and his behavior may cause his owner to keep him off the field. The Contract Bond makes Messick a summonable Battle Companion whose level cannot exceed Han Ying Xue's, so signing temporarily lowers him to her level. He remains stronger than many Battle Companions, with HP measured at least seven times that of Reina and a place behind only Felice and Ankh among one comparison of companions. His Violet-Platinum spear and armor improve automatically with his level, reducing his need for ordinary companion drops, but that progression favors survivability over damage and does not cure his tendency to retreat from lethal pressure. Relationships

• Han Ying Xue: Messick's contracted owner and frequent target of his advances. She often refuses to summon him when his low damage and offensive behavior outweigh his tanking value, but his protection enables her to survive difficult fights and complete a solo trial. • Zhang Yang: Zhang Yang fights beside Messick against Duchess Winst, identifies his potential as a Battle Companion, and later uses him as the party's second tank. He nevertheless regards Messick as far less brave and dependable than Felice. (Chapters 475–480, 504, 565, and 589)
• Duchess Winst: Winst executes Messick's parents over an unsatisfactory dress, giving him his central grievance. Messick retaliates by helping Zhang Yang fight her, provoking her with insults, and revealing how to rob her treasure chamber. (Chapters 475–480)
• Felice: Felice repeatedly punishes Messick's harassment with fire or spear attacks. He fears her retaliation but does not permanently change his behavior, while comparisons with her expose both his durability and his poor courage and damage. (Chapters 476, 501, 504, 514, and 565)
