Botis

Botis is a former Abraham-family Apprentice who betrays his family, joins the Aurora Order, and becomes its Saint of Secrets. His exceptional mobility, recorded powers, and stolen Grade 0 Sealed Artifact make him difficult to hunt, but his fixation on eliminating possible Abraham revenge leads him into the Tarot Club's layered trap. (Chapters 404, 1078, 1173–1174, and 1194–1201)

Biography

Role in the Central Conflict

Botis is first mentioned as the former Traveler whose Aurora Order-backed rebellion gravely wounded Lawrence and killed Lawrence's remaining descendants. His first direct appearance comes much later in Backlund, as a black-trench-coated man whose proximity to Dorian Gray Abraham is attributed to Door-pathway characteristic convergence. Fors Wall recognizes him but does not attack because locating and containing a Secrets Sorcerer is beyond her current means. Her account later gives Klein Moretti a target: hunting Botis can provide a Worm of Star and return stolen Abraham property while allowing Fors to avenge her teacher's family. (Chapters 404, 1078, 1102, and 1173–1174)

The operation exploits Botis's own grievance. Intelligence suggesting that a woman connected to the Abraham family seeks Scribe ingredients draws his attention, and he chooses to act not because he wants reconciliation but because he believes all possible avengers should die. Even after divination indicates acceptable danger, he arrives early, hides a section of the meeting room, verifies Fors's possession of Leymano's Travels, and uses the Box of the Great Old Ones to capture her as a toy. His precautions show professional caution, yet his hatred makes the bait valuable enough that he proceeds. (Chapters 1194–1195)

Cattleya prevents his initial escape with Mystical Re-enactment, while Audrey Hall secretly plants a Virtual Persona and Mental Plague. Botis survives the first direct assault through layered doors, a recorded Shadow Substitute, and a three-second Reboot of Fate, then launches enough recorded demigod powers to force Cattleya's apparent retreat. The retreat is deliberate: it separates Botis from Saint Tenebrous and rushes him into teleporting before he can inspect his mind. Audrey changes his destination, after which Mental Plague, Sleeping Beauty, and Frenzy push him toward losing control and prevent reliable escape. (Chapters 1195–1198)

Driven into madness, Botis attempts a mutually destructive opening of the Box's third level. It refuses to open; his incomplete Mythical Creature form then collapses into Worms of Star, leaving only two intact eyes, his characteristic, and equipment. The text later confirms that he was already losing control before the Box's contamination finished him, so his death is the consequence of accumulated mental sabotage, failed escape, deteriorating luck, and the Grade 0 artifact's backlash rather than a single clean killing blow. His death allows Fors to prove the result to Dorian and helps establish contact between Klein and the surviving Abraham family. (Chapters 1198–1201 and 1204–1207)

Appearance and personality

Botis is a broad-shouldered, sturdy man with slightly curled brown hair and deep, dark eyes. He dresses in a black trench coat or mysterious black robe. When using high-level Door powers, his eyes can resemble a star-filled cosmos, and at death his pupils become deep black and freeze with extreme terror. (Chapters 1078, 1194, 1197, and 1199–1201)

He is cautious, suspicious, and vindictive. Botis divines danger, scouts through hidden space, plans distant escape routes, brings another Saint as support, and prefers suppressing an opponent long enough to flee rather than pursuing a needless kill. Those strengths coexist with a cruel obsession: he says that his philosophy is to eliminate revenge at its source and wants the Abraham family dead because he once felt distrusted and denied its valued resources. That grievance is the emotional lever that overcomes his otherwise excessive caution. (Chapters 1194–1198)

Pathways and abilities

Botis is a Door-pathway Sequence 4 Secrets Sorcerer, formerly advancing through Apprentice, Trickmaster, Astrologer, Scribe, and Traveler. His demigod body contains Worms of Star, and his toolkit combines native space control with powers recorded during extensive travel. The breadth is formidable but imposes limits: recorded effects are weaker or narrower than originals, finite high-level records can be expended, and using many Worms of Star to Blink and cast rapidly cannot be sustained for long. (Chapters 1078, 1194–1199, and 1201)

Space Concealment lets Botis divide an area from reality while leaving a required “door” through which it can be entered or observed. He uses a mirror placed in that door to watch the gathering while remaining in a room that is spatially absent to outside observers. Concealment can protect or restrain, but sufficiently destructive force can crack the isolated space, and removing it exposes the region again. (Chapters 1194–1196)

Blink produces rapid short-range changes of position and multiple afterimages, each capable of releasing a different power through separate Worms of Star. Teleportation carries him through the spirit world to distant coordinates, making ordinary pursuit nearly impossible. Both have counters: an Arbiter prohibition can briefly seal the route, high-level starlight can prevent escape, and a Manipulator who has already infiltrated his mind can alter the intended destination. (Chapters 1078 and 1195–1198)

Doors and Exile

Botis can place himself behind layers of illusory doors, forcing an attack to penetrate repeated spatial barriers before reaching him. He can also create many doors associated with dangerous or unusual spaces. Exile throws a controlled target through one such door into chaotic space, but at his rank it lasts only about twenty seconds; he uses it to isolate the rebelling Box of the Great Old Ones until the imposed intelligence should fade. The fixed return point means Exile delays the problem rather than permanently removing it. (Chapters 1196–1197)

Recording and high-level borrowed powers

The Scribe-derived Record ability lets Botis reproduce powers and even particular states he has witnessed. Demonstrated records include lightning, holy light, Black Knight abilities, a Sequence 3 Shadow Substitute, Ouroboros's Reboot of Fate, and one attack-state of the Abomination Suah. His Reboot affects only roughly three seconds and a room-sized area, while the Suah record is obtained only after repeated failed attempts under favorable fate. The copied powers give him extraordinary variety without granting the original beings' full status, duration, or control. (Chapters 1196–1198)

Astrology, mental partition, and demigod form

Botis uses crystal-ball divination and Astrologer knowledge to identify locations and assess danger. As a demigod he can distribute mental burdens across Worms of Star, a tactic he uses to resist Mind Deprivation and locate a hidden Spectator. Audrey counters by filling those partitions with dangerous knowledge rather than meaningless overload, turning his defense into another distraction. Once Mental Plague and Frenzy destabilize him, the Worms of Star emerge and his incomplete Mythical Creature form disintegrates beyond recovery. (Chapters 1194 and 1197–1199)

Relationships

  • The Abraham family: Botis's former family and the object of his resentment. He steals the Box of the Great Old Ones when he defects and interprets earlier caution toward him as humiliation, leading him to kill possible descendants preemptively. (Chapters 1194–1195 and 1207)
  • Dorian Gray Abraham: A surviving Abraham teacher whose proximity draws Botis through characteristic convergence. Botis's death and recovered property later become Klein's proof of goodwill to Dorian. (Chapters 1078, 1102, and 1204–1207)
  • Fors Wall: The bait and intended captive in the hunt. Fors seeks justice for her teacher's family; Botis successfully confines her in the Box, but her companions defeat him and free her before the twenty-four-hour permanent-conversion limit. (Chapters 1174 and 1194–1201)
  • Cattleya and Audrey Hall: The operation's principal attackers. Cattleya contests his artifact and recorded powers directly, while Audrey covertly compromises his mind and destination; their layered plan succeeds because neither relies on a single method to contain a Door demigod. (Chapters 1195–1199)
  • Saint Tenebrous Kisma: Botis's Aurora Order support. Kisma helps verify the bait and fights beside him, but the staged retreat separates them before the final kill box, removing the ally who might have helped inspect or stabilize Botis. (Chapters 1194–1198)

Items

  • Box of the Great Old Ones: A Grade 0 Sealed Artifact stolen from the Abraham family. Its first layer exchanges a target area with a miniature toy scene; living beings become permanent toys after twenty-four hours if not released. Its second layer transports nearby life to recorded locations but is largely random, and its third layer is so dangerous that Botis's failed attempt to open it precedes his death. Its negative effects include random disappearance, mutation, or death, partially mitigated—but not removed—by Ouroboros's blessing. (Chapters 1195–1200)
  • Traveler's Bag: A black interspatial pocket created through Space Concealment and a spirit-world coordinate. It holds gems and spiritual materials but requires Door-pathway reinforcement and does not block the negative effects of items stored inside. (Chapters 1199–1201)
  • Divination crystal ball: A dark crystal ball used to assess the operation and later shatter into the void to interfere with mystical tracking. Its warning is only “acceptable,” illustrating that divination does not expose Audrey's already concealed mental infiltration. (Chapters 1194 and 1197)
