Dorian Gray Abraham — Lord of the Mysteries

Dorian Gray Abraham is a cautious teacher and senior member of the Abraham family who inherits Lawrence's responsibility for Fors Wall. Betrayal by former students makes him slow to trust, yet Fors's loyalty eventually persuades him to share the family's deepest problem: the full-moon ravings attributed to their ancestor Mr. Door. His decision to seek the Fool's protection helps the family survive Mr. Door's return and learn that its ancient curse has finally ended.

Biography

Role in the Central Conflict

Before dying, Lawrence arranges for Fors to deliver his notebook, a Beyonder characteristic, and Leymano's Travels to Dorian. Dorian tests Fors's account with astrology and judges that she is truthful and may bring beneficial change, but the betrayal of earlier students has made him wary. He begins with correspondence, observes how she handles graves and responsibility, and only then offers to teach her as an Apprentice-pathway Beyonder. He gives her the acting method, the Trickmaster formula, practical instruction, and later higher-level knowledge while withholding the most dangerous family secrets until her conduct earns trust. (Chapters 404, 408, 431–435, and 566)

That caution comes chiefly from Botis and Lewis Wien, talented students whose defection to the Aurora Order caused severe Abraham losses. Dorian changes identities and addresses when Fors warns that enemies may be closing in, and he asks that the traitors be punished. Fors's allies eventually bring evidence of their deaths, resolving part of his old guilt and fear. The result changes his judgment of Fors: rather than treating her as a replaceable contact, he recognizes her as a loyal student capable of carrying the family's future. Fors later brings a proposal from Gehrman Sparrow: the Planeswalker formula and a Grade 0 Sealed Artifact in exchange for the Box of the Great Old Ones and a solution to the Abraham curse. Dorian fears another trap, but meeting Gehrman reveals that Mr. Door's ravings are entangled with corruption from the cosmos. He prays to the Fool and receives angelic protection; during the full moon he experiences silence and a serene moon instead of the familiar ravings, convincing him to trust the offer and gather the family. Verdu Abraham nevertheless rejects restraint and tries to free Mr. Door. When Mr. Door returns and perishes, Dorian helps assemble the surviving family and learns through the Fool that the ancestor's relics have returned and the curse is completely removed. Alive and overwhelmed by the end of generations of suffering, he promises Fors the Wanderer formula and ingredient once she digests her current potion, while still warning her that advancement is her choice because the danger remains. Appearance and personality

Dorian is a medium-built man with neat hair, blue eyes, and unusually broad, powerful-looking arms. He presents himself through ordinary professional identities and association offices, matching a family whose survival has depended on concealment and migration. (Chapters 404 and 408)

He is meticulous, guarded, and sometimes pessimistic, but those traits arise from responsibility rather than indifference. He uses divination, incremental tests, and changing safe houses because a mistaken judgment once cost his family dearly. Fors's consistency allows affection and hope to re-emerge beneath that caution. His tears when protected from the full moon and when told the curse has ended show how much of his adult life has been organized around an inherited catastrophe he could manage but not cure. Pathways and abilities

Dorian is explicitly a Sequence 7 Astrologer of the Door pathway. Earlier Apprentice abilities let him open passages through suitable obstacles and perform short-range spatial movement, which he demonstrates by appearing behind a tree. As an Astrologer he uses a crystal ball and symbolic signs to judge truth, danger, and likely influence. Divination guides decisions rather than providing complete facts: he still relies on interviews, prolonged observation, and protective arrangements before trusting Fors or Gehrman. (Chapters 408, 431–432, and 1207)

He also performs ritual magic and maintains a contract with Malmouth, a creature from the spirit world or void that can retrieve and store materials. Calling it requires the proper ritual and song; the storage effect belongs to the contracted creature rather than representing unrestricted personal teleportation. Dorian's strongest contribution is often accumulated Abraham knowledge—formulas, acting guidance, rituals, and records—rather than combat. The corpus does not show him advancing beyond Astrologer within the stated scope. (Chapters 432–435 and 1207)

The Abraham full-moon affliction is not an Astrologer ability. Mr. Door's ravings can leave Dorian in acute distress and force him to rely on prepared medicine; the Fool's angelic protection blocks the transmission during the test. The later removal of the curse ends that external danger but does not erase normal potion risks, which is why Dorian still emphasizes choice, digestion, and the hazards of advancement when offering Fors the next formula. Relationships

Fors Wall: Dorian inherits responsibility for evaluating Fors, becomes her teacher, and gradually treats her as the family's most promising loyal successor.
Lawrence: His dying arrangements bring Fors and the Abraham inheritance to Dorian and initiate their teacher-student relationship.
Botis and Lewis Wien: Former students whose betrayal traumatizes Dorian and the family, producing the caution with which he initially treats Fors.
Mr. Door / Bethel Abraham: The family's ancestor and the apparent source of its full-moon curse. Learning of his cosmic corruption forces Dorian to choose the family's survival over unquestioning restoration.

Items

Crystal ball: Dorian's principal medium for astrology. He uses it to test Fors's account and assess whether her arrival is likely to help the family. (Chapter 408)
Malmouth contract: A ritual contract with a nonhuman creature used to store and retrieve ingredients. Its service depends on the correct summoning procedure and does not belong to Dorian's innate spatial powers. (Chapter 432)
Leymano's Travels: An Abraham notebook capable of recording and reproducing Beyonder powers. Lawrence routes it through Fors to Dorian, who later makes it available within their teacher-student arrangements. (Chapters 404 and 566)
