Sun Qiang

Sun Qiang is Zhang Xuan's longtime butler, household manager, and commercial intermediary. A streetwise realtor from Tianxuan Kingdom, he turns his absolute faith in Zhang Xuan and the supposed master teacher "Yang Xuan" into an authority that repeatedly lets him negotiate with people far stronger than himself. His boasting and indolence cause trouble, but his loyalty remains consistent across kingdoms and worlds: he manages Zhang Xuan's homes and public affairs, protects the disciples in his absence, and ultimately follows him into the Firmament.

Biography

From realtor to master teacher's butler

Sun Qiang begins as the plump owner of a realtor agency in Tianyu Commercial City. Zhang Xuan, disguised as the wandering master teacher Yang Xuan, exposes Sun Qiang's private dealings, pays for a mansion, and offers to resolve the cultivation bottleneck that has trapped him at Zhenqi realm pinnacle for more than a decade. For a minor merchant accustomed to bowing before the city's powerful people, service to a master teacher promises both advancement and a dignity he has never possessed. He accepts immediately, sells his shop, recruits the mansion's guards and servants, and uses his commercial connections to publicize his new master's presence throughout Tianxuan Royal City. (Chapters 126 and 128)

The position changes Sun Qiang's social standing almost overnight. He obeys Zhang Xuan's counterintuitive order to leave the wealthy Ling Tianyu waiting outside, even though refusing such a man would once have terrified him, and he watches former superiors begin addressing him respectfully because he controls access to Yang Xuan. He quickly learns to perform the role with imposing gestures and lofty speech. His imitation sometimes outruns his judgment—he nearly provokes Master Teacher Liu Ling by copying phrases whose meaning he does not understand—but the same incident reveals that Zhang Xuan's guidance has already cleared his blocked meridians and raised him well beyond the limit that other master teachers expected from his constitution. His growing pride does not displace his honesty. During Zhang Xuan's absence, Sun Qiang withstands a mansion crowded by nobles and experts, keeps an orderly queue, records the visitors and their entrance fees, and returns every gift and gold bill entrusted to him rather than concealing any of it. Zhang Xuan rewards him with a sum greater than he could have earned in his former life, and Sun Qiang privately resolves to follow the old master without complaint. His service is therefore founded on material gratitude and social elevation, but also on the conviction that Zhang Xuan has opened an entirely new life to him. (Chapters 171–181)

Carrying the household beyond Tianxuan

When Zhang Xuan travels onward, Sun Qiang adapts his loyalty to the fiction that Zhang Xuan is Yang Xuan's direct disciple, addressing him as "Young Master" while continuing to regard the absent old master as the household's ultimate authority. He arranges residences, screens visitors, reports requests, and promotes Zhang Xuan's growing list of occupations to local contacts. His strict gatekeeping can be reckless—he leaves two 4-star master teachers waiting outside because they bring no gift—yet Zhang Xuan recognizes that his butler is reliable at completing assigned work and that his confidence helps sustain the public identity on which the household depends. That confidence is tested when Zhang Xuan sends him to the Xuanyuan Kingdom Poison Hall with Gu Mu's token. Sun Qiang knows little about poison and is vastly weaker than the people receiving him, but he interprets his place in Yang Xuan's household as a form of seniority and demands that Hall Master Gu Mu welcome his "uncle." Rather than retreat when confronted by Gu Mu's teacher, the 4-star poison master Jin Conghai, he invokes the deference shown to Yang Xuan by senior master teachers and delivers Zhang Xuan's summons without compromising it with explanations. His performance is presumptuous, but it succeeds: Gu Mu joins the journey, and Sun Qiang's unshakable praise of Zhang Xuan helps others understand why the young master is more dangerous and capable than his visible cultivation suggests. On the return journey, an ancient soul oracle attempts to possess Sun Qiang. A reserve of Zhang Xuan's pure zhenqi, originally left in his body as protection against poison, destroys the intruding soul; the soul's cultivation then becomes nourishment that carries Sun Qiang from Zongshi realm to Transcendent Mortal 1-dan intermediate stage. The gain is external and sudden, leaving his control immature and his battle techniques far below his new realm, but it deepens his gratitude toward Zhang Xuan. Across the Myriad Kingdom Alliance and Huanyu Empire, he resumes the work at which he is strongest: appraising commercial situations, wagering on Zhang Xuan's success, managing valuables and cultivation resources, and expressing such complete faith in the young master that he remains calm even when stronger observers believe Zhang Xuan is trapped in a fatal formation. The Hongyuan household and Qingyuan crisis

At Hongyuan, Sun Qiang provides the practical infrastructure around Zhang Xuan's rise. He searches an overcrowded city for a residence near the Master Teacher Academy, sells unneeded artifacts when the household runs short of money, gathers market intelligence, and later serves as gatekeeper during the Xuanxuan Faction's lectures. His aggressive entrance fee for Lu Feng is partly opportunism and partly retaliation against a school head who has opposed Zhang Xuan. The conduct captures both sides of his service: he exploits the status of the household whenever he sees an opening, yet does so in defense of the young master's interests and accepts the risk of offending people whom he could never defeat personally. Zhang Xuan's habit of using the name "Sun Qiang" as a disguise creates a far more serious consequence. Reports of a mysterious poison master and spirit awakener under that name lead King Zhongqing to abduct the real Sun Qiang, pierce him with Golden Soul Locks, and torture him for evidence that Zhang Xuan colludes with the Poison Hall. Sun Qiang remains alive until Zhang Xuan comes for him, and, despite his injuries, he joins Luo Qiqi and Yu Fei-er in placing himself between the apparently unconscious Zhang Xuan and King Zhongqing's sword. The failed defense leaves him badly injured again, but it makes his loyalty physical rather than merely rhetorical: faced with an opponent far beyond him, he still chooses to protect his young master. (Chapters 1109, 1144–1152)

Later, when Emperor Chu Tianxing secretly captures Liu Yang while Zhang Xuan is away, Sun Qiang refuses to wait for a slow institutional response. Remembering his own torture, he asks the rescued poison masters for help, plans a nonlethal infiltration using Scattering Breeze Powder, and leads them into the palace. He personally confronts the emperor, finds Liu Yang near death, and uses recovery pills left by Zhang Xuan to stabilize him. Liu Yang then attacks Chu Tianxing in fury, and the emperor's apparent death transforms the rescue into a political disaster. Believing Liu Yang responsible, Sun Qiang rebukes the frightened youth for forgetting that his actions also implicate their teacher, returns to seek help rather than abandoning him, and is nearly executed with the poison masters before Zhang Xuan intervenes. Zhang Xuan later deduces that Chu Tianxing actually died when the destruction of the Vicious will bound to him by soul contract dissipated his soul. The episode shows both Sun Qiang's limits and his growth: he acts decisively when a member of the household is endangered, but his planning cannot contain every consequence once violence begins. The collapse of Yang Xuan and a restored place

Sun Qiang's faith faces its deepest rupture at the Sanctum of Sages. When the real Yang Xuan appears, Sun Qiang initially treats him as another impostor and invokes the very secrecy rules meant to protect high-ranked master teachers. The authentic identity token finally forces him to accept that the old master he has worshiped never existed as he understood him. Because his authority, pride, and sense of belonging have all grown from that identity, the revelation does not merely embarrass him; it makes him question the entire journey and leaves him unable to respond coherently even when Zhang Xuan's mother tries to question him. Yang Xuan recognizes that Sun Qiang sincerely believed the deception and orders that judgment be postponed. (Chapters 1507–1509)

At the Master Teacher Pavilion headquarters, coercive instruction sends Sun Qiang's cultivation out of control, compounding his fear that he has lost both his protector and his place. Yang Xuan later returns with the correction that Zhang Xuan is actually his senior, restoring the hierarchy in a form even more exalted than the fiction that had collapsed. Sun Qiang's relief upon seeing Zhang Xuan is immediate and emotional. Zhang Xuan, however, responds to the crisis by placing him under Zheng Yang's strict training, making clear that status cannot permanently substitute for strength. (Chapter 1554)

Training does not erase Sun Qiang's vanity, but it changes the foundation beneath it. When he moves to the Zhang Clan, the knowledge that Zhang Xuan is its head quickly restores his confidence, and he attempts to assert seniority over Wu Chen before being effortlessly removed from the scene. At the same time, he continues to perform useful work, monitoring tensions between the Zhang and Luo Clans and reporting developments directly to Zhang Xuan. He remains boastful and sometimes humiliatingly unaware of the strength around him, yet the household retains him because his long service, information work, and personal devotion are not replaceable by mere cultivation. Following Zhang Xuan into the Azure

After Zhang Xuan ascends, Sun Qiang discovers that comfort and borrowed prestige no longer satisfy him. Realizing that indolence has left him unable to keep pace, he trains intensely for a year and reaches Ancient Sage 4-dan primary stage. He asks to enter the Azure not simply for advancement but because the perilous years beside Zhang Xuan were more meaningful than an easy life in the lower world. Zhang Xuan will not risk taking him directly through the dimension barrier, so Sun Qiang follows by the safer passage with medicine and protection, then crosses the Azure to find the Ascendant Cloud Sword Pavilion. (Chapters 2078–2079)

His arrival produces an immediate dispute with Cao Chengli, who has served as Zhang Xuan's local butler. Sun Qiang insists that years of shared danger make him the only person who truly understands the young master. Zhang Xuan ultimately confirms him in the role, citing his proven ability to gather information and find financial opportunities, and immediately entrusts him with tracing Luo Qiqi. Sun Qiang's candid question about Luo Qiqi's feelings also prompts Zhang Xuan to examine whether the Library of Heaven's Path has dulled his emotions, showing that the butler's familiarity sometimes lets him challenge his master's self-understanding rather than merely flatter him. When Zhang Xuan prepares to ascend again, Sun Qiang refuses to be left behind. He raises his cultivation from True Immortal to Heavenly Semi-Divinity with Zhang Xuan's resources and enters the Firmament alongside the disciples and Zhang Xuan's parents. This is not a transformation into a disciplined prodigy—he still depends heavily on external resources—but it fulfills the determination born after the first separation: he has made himself strong enough to remain part of the household's journey. Steward of a household in the Firmament

In Twilight City, Sun Qiang again becomes the household's public face. He screens merchants seeking Zhang Xuan's Beauty Pill formula and refuses to sell his master's work even when he does not yet know what the pill is. When Ying Fei attempts to poison and intimidate him, Sun Qiang remains unaffected, drives him out with repeated slaps, and protects the household's interests without waiting for instructions. He also wins a place on the Celestial Mountain through Zhang Xuan's manipulation of the city's lottery and defeats a talented local cultivator with the simplified Heaven's Path techniques he has practiced, demonstrating that his accumulated training can now support some of the confidence that was once almost entirely borrowed. The Celestial Mountain brings another decisive advance. An envoy from the Sky of Heavenly Sword takes Sun Qiang and Zhang Xuan's parents for instruction, and the three return as high-tier Gods with a sword intent centered on protection. Sun Qiang explains that Zhang Xuan is his backing and source of support, so protecting the young master is necessary both for loyalty and for the identity he enjoys. In Drifting Specter Royal City, that devotion becomes strenuous practical labor: he sources and renovates one hundred shops for Zhang Xuan's pill enterprise, coordinates millions of God Essence Tablets and their packaging, and completes the assignment while sleeping less than four hours a night. The former idler can therefore work with exceptional intensity when the task directly sustains Zhang Xuan's plans. (Chapters 2134–2137 and 2159–2161)

Sun Qiang later reaches high-tier Celestial God and continues handling business, cultivation supplies, and the safety of Zhang Xuan's parents. In a later confrontation with members of the Shangguan Clan, he shields an unknown woman from involvement, defeats numerous middle-tier Celestial Gods through combat judgment, and uses a token carrying Zhang Xuan's aura to overcome a Half-God King who exceeds his own cultivation. The woman is Fairy Linglong, and his combination of bravado, protectiveness, and carefully staged confidence wins her interest; they marry a year later. His final success thus grows from the same traits that defined the Tianxuan merchant—social instinct, audacity, and faith in his master—now reinforced by genuine cultivation and long experience. Appearance and personality

Sun Qiang is consistently described as a plump or fatty middle-aged man with a friendly-looking face. He is not conventionally handsome, but his expressive features and practiced air of authority can give him a distinctive charm. His weight remains a recurring feature even as his cultivation rises across worlds; observers in Tianxuan place him below forty when he first enters service, while later acquaintances describe the Sun Qiang they know as appearing to be in his forties. (Chapters 175, 1121, and 2268)

He is streetwise, materialistic, gluttonous, and highly responsive to prestige. Years as a merchant give him a practical grasp of prices, housing, negotiation, publicity, and the motives of customers. He enjoys using Zhang Xuan's name to make stronger people defer to him and often mistakes borrowed authority for personal invulnerability. His bravado is not pure deception, however: he regularly maintains it in situations where he does not know whether his backing will arrive, and his composure lets him complete negotiations that intimidate much stronger escorts. (Chapters 128, 430–431, 748, and 926)

Indolence is his most persistent weakness. Zhang Xuan repeatedly contrasts Sun Qiang's tendency to eat, boast, and avoid cultivation with the diligence of his disciples, and sudden external boosts often carry him farther than his own training. Nevertheless, humiliation and separation can motivate genuine change. He trains hard enough to follow Zhang Xuan into the Azure, accepts Zheng Yang's discipline after the false Yang Xuan crisis, and later exhausts himself building the Firmament pill network. Beneath his vanity is a durable loyalty: he returns entrusted wealth, protects Zhang Xuan and the disciples despite personal danger, and treats membership in the household as the central meaning of his life. Abilities and cultivation

Sun Qiang's cultivation advances unevenly, combining Zhang Xuan's instruction, simplified Heaven's Path methods, accidental nourishment, and periods of belated hard work. His strongest consistent talents are not destructive techniques but stewardship, information gathering, negotiation, and the confidence to act as Zhang Xuan's representative.

Simplified Heaven's Path cultivation

Sun Qiang begins with an inferior constitution, blocked meridians, and impure zhenqi that have held him at Zhenqi realm pinnacle for over a decade. Zhang Xuan uses exceptionally pure zhenqi to clear the blockages and merge the accumulated energy, allowing Sun Qiang to advance beyond the limit that experienced master teachers expect of him. He later cultivates an orthodox simplified version of the Heaven's Path Divine Art. Its zhenqi is described as pure and attributeless, a quality used as evidence that he is not a poison master, and Zhang Xuan's Impartation of Heaven's Will helps him consolidate and advance his realm. His most dramatic early leap is not the result of normal mastery. When a weakened soul oracle tries to devour him, the reserve of Zhang Xuan's zhenqi in his body destroys it, and its attribute-free soul energy becomes compatible nourishment. Sun Qiang reaches Transcendent Mortal 1-dan intermediate stage, but his control remains immature and he still relies on crude low-tier battle techniques. This distinction persists through much of his development: his realm can rise rapidly with exceptional resources, while his usable combat skill lags unless he trains deliberately. (Chapters 473–474)

After being placed under Zheng Yang's supervision, Sun Qiang develops a stronger foundation. He reaches Ancient Sage 4-dan through a year of determined cultivation, later progresses through True Immortal and Heavenly Semi-Divinity with Zhang Xuan's resources, and attains Godhood on the Celestial Mountain. By the later Firmament events he is a high-tier Celestial God. These gains make him formidable against ordinary cultivators, but the text continues to distinguish his achievement from the deeper talent and discipline of Zhang Xuan's direct disciples. Protective zhenqi and resistance

Before the Poison Hall mission, Zhang Xuan deposits a surge of zhenqi in Sun Qiang's dantian and teaches him how to activate it against poison. The reserve is capable of protecting him from ordinary poison masters and later annihilates the soul oracle that attempts possession, although it is consumed in doing so. This protection belongs to Zhang Xuan's power rather than an innate ability of Sun Qiang, and its extraordinary effect should not be treated as evidence that Sun Qiang possesses natural soul-oracle mastery. Much later in the Firmament, Sun Qiang remains unharmed after Ying Fei sends multiple poisons into his body, including poison expected to incapacitate a high-tier God. The scene establishes strong resistance but does not explicitly identify its mechanism. His pure cultivation, higher realm, and long exposure to Zhang Xuan's methods are relevant context, but the corpus does not confirm which of them causes the immunity. (Chapters 2127–2128)

Combat skills and protective sword intent

Sun Qiang's early combat is limited by poor technique and weak control despite his cultivated realm. Through the simplified Heaven's Path battle techniques and later training, he becomes capable of reading and exploiting ordinary opponents. At Twilight City he defeats a talented Semi-Divinity with a rapid sequence of punches and is judged strong enough to overcome several such cultivators. In the later tavern confrontation, he moves through attacks from dozens of middle-tier Celestial Gods without being struck, anticipates their flaws, and defeats them efficiently. Instruction from an envoy of the Sky of Heavenly Sword gives his sword intent the concept of protecting Zhang Xuan. The training raises him to high-tier God and leaves him near the threshold of Celestial God, though the source does not name a specific sword technique or show a complete repertoire. As a high-tier Celestial God, he can dominate weaker groups but remains at a direct disadvantage against a Half-God King. In that fight, a token bearing Zhang Xuan's aura lets him reverse the outcome; the decisive enhancement is item-derived authority and power, not proof that his unaided cultivation equals the opponent's. Stewardship, commerce, and intelligence

Sun Qiang's signature competence is administration. He recruits servants quickly, finds scarce housing, controls access to Zhang Xuan, maintains visitor and payment records, investigates markets and cultivation resources, and converts valuable goods into operating funds. His merchant background helps him recognize sales tactics and evaluate commercial settings, while his bold presentation enables him to negotiate as the representative of someone far more powerful. These skills repeatedly free Zhang Xuan and the disciples to focus on cultivation. (Chapters 128, 175, 610, 701–704, 748, and 1331–1332)

His largest logistical feat comes in Drifting Specter Royal City. Given ten days to secure and renovate one hundred shops, he finishes all of them in seven, coordinates more than three million God Essence Tablets, and prepares the required packaging for a simultaneous market campaign. Money and local partners ease procurement, but the coordination and sustained effort are his own. By this stage Zhang Xuan continues to rely on him not because he is the strongest member of the household, but because few others match his networking speed and ability to turn vague commercial goals into functioning operations.
