Biography

Building a career and representing Kugelblitz

Vernon began as a Zephyx Extractor for a Manufacturer that later disappeared, lost that position after making a mistake with a Specter, and was subsequently recruited by a much smaller company as its Chief Zephyx Extractor. Recognizing that his greater talent lay in business, he eventually surrendered the operational post and helped that company grow into Kugelblitz. By the time Nick meets him, Vernon owns twenty percent, serves as Senior Director, and remembers his difficult ascent with more affection than the comfortable routine it produced. That personal history shapes how Vernon raises his children and evaluates Wyntor. He makes his heirs establish Manufacturers and earn enough to buy a small Kugelblitz stake rather than simply handing them wealth, yet assumes Dark Dream will ultimately be sold back into the family company. When Wyntor rejects that plan because he values building something himself, Vernon recognizes the same hunger for accomplishment that once drove him. He accepts the decision with disappointment rather than forcing a sale, while making clear that a true board seat requires wealth on a far larger scale. (Chapters 6–10 and 205–208)

Vernon presents a genial private face to Nick, relaxing him with conversation and an enthusiastic introduction to coffee, then warns that the annual Manufacturers' meeting requires him to act with Kugelblitz's institutional arrogance. There he requests higher taxes from the Dregs to offset declining blood payments and credit inflation. When Wyntor challenges him afterward, Vernon explains that the proposal was already corporate policy and that refusing to present it could cost his job. Whether or not he personally favored the increase remains unstated, but his willingness to serve the policy teaches Nick that even a powerful shareholder subordinates private feeling to company interest. Protecting Dark Dream and losing Wyntor

When the Spartans attack Nick, Wyntor invokes his father's name to turn a private assassination attempt into a threat against Kugelblitz's sphere. Vernon responds because Dark Dream is both his son's company and, in his view, a future Kugelblitz acquisition whose destruction would damage his authority. He loans his personal Shadow Shroud at Wyntor's request despite the device's value and the risk of implication, enabling Nick's infiltration. After the Crimson Sea escapes, Vernon's immediate concern about recovering the Shroud confirms that his protection carries strict limits where his own exposure begins. (Chapters 274–276 and 307)

Wyntor's assassination breaks that working arrangement. Vernon openly grieves over the still-warm body, then quickly turns to securing Nick and Dark Dream, offering to buy Nick's thirty percent and hire him as a Kugelblitz team leader. Nick uses that speed to make Vernon appear more interested in property than his son and unveils a shareholder contract in which Wyntor's stake passes to the surviving owner. What begins as Vernon's attempt to preserve a company tied to his family becomes a confrontation over whether he or Nick has engineered Wyntor's death for the shares. (Chapters 327–330)

The city-held contract validates Nick's version, forcing Vernon to conclude that Wyntor secretly gave him a false copy while submitting the death-clause version for safekeeping. The discovery tells Vernon that his son did not trust him with Dark Dream's succession, and Nick compounds the injury by accusing him of murder and fraud before witnesses. Vernon relinquishes the company but leaves humiliated and convinced that Nick played some role in Wyntor's death. The struggle against Anatomy and the Death Pact

Anatomy's expansion gradually turns Vernon's personal vendetta into a secondary concern. As Kugelblitz's scattered owners block decisive action, he and Aria Light oppose transferring Experts in exchange for Anatomy's Specters and watch every other voting bloc approve a bargain they consider corporate suicide. Vernon recognizes that greed alone no longer explains the board's decisions and concludes that Mundus has compromised the other sixty percent of ownership. With Kugelblitz effectively captured from within, preserving the company requires him to cooperate with the man he still believes killed his son. (Chapters 455 and 459–460; Chapters 463–475)

Vernon approaches Nick because the Spartan infiltration and Crimson Sea disaster convince him that Nick can perform operations far beyond his formal rank. He offers an Elixir, a chosen advancement ability, and a possible Elder in exchange for a Death Pact compelling Nick to cripple Anatomy. Vernon signs before he has secured Aria's consent, thereby putting his own life at risk and forcing Kugelblitz to release the Elixir rather than let him die. He then contributes intelligence on Anatomy's building and Fanatics, helps design the assault, and brings the concealed Nick to Ghosty, turning old business relationships into the support network for a last attempt at survival. Nick's sabotage allows Kugelblitz to attack a collapsing Anatomy, and Vernon escapes the negotiation as open battle begins. He is a Peak Expert but not a strong fighter, so he flees rather than join the combat; Nick anticipates that choice, ambushes him with his ability active, breaks his Barrier, and decapitates him. Nick initially frames the killing as protection because Vernon knows his power and could expose his connection to the Crimson Sea, but later admits to Aria that hatred was the deeper motive. Appearance and personality

Vernon has thick, voluminous blonde hair, flawless pale skin, and an athletic build that appears optimized more for speed and stamina than raw power. Although he is over sixty at his introduction and has several adult children, his Expert longevity makes him look like an exceptionally beautiful man in his late twenties; more than a decade later, his appearance remains that of a charismatic twenty-year-old. His outward youth reinforces the disparity between his welcoming manner and the experience and authority behind it. (Chapters 205 and 208; Chapter 461)

In private Vernon is socially polished, conversational, and capable of genuine-seeming enthusiasm, especially about coffee. He knows when he has slipped into formulaic corporate speech, makes an effort to put Nick at ease, and treats Wyntor with familiar teasing rather than formal distance. In public business, he deliberately adopts hauteur to embody Kugelblitz's superior status and can argue a harsh policy without revealing a personal view. This separation between surface warmth, role, and inner priority makes him effective at relationship-building but leaves people close to him uncertain whether affection extends beyond utility. Vernon is pragmatic, status-conscious, and intensely protective of assets he regards as his responsibility. He can grieve Wyntor and discuss Dark Dream's ownership within minutes, pursue revenge while refusing a financially reckless assassination, and set aside that revenge when Anatomy threatens Kugelblitz. Later assessments are consistently unflattering but should be treated as perspectives: Nick calls him a smiling backstabber, Aria considers him dependable but emotionally cold, and Samar's hostility suggests that his transactional parenting alienated even his most successful child. Abilities and Zephyx

Vernon is a Peak Expert by the Anatomy conflict. He began as an ordinary Zephyx Extractor and once served as a Chief Zephyx Extractor, giving him decades of exposure to Specters and other abilities, but the corpus never names his own ability or explains its acquisition, activation, or effects. His rank grants the physical capacity to keep pace with a newly advanced Veteran across the Inner City and extended longevity that preserves his youthful appearance.   • Nick: Vernon initially welcomes Nick as Wyntor's friend and treats him as Dark Dream's valuable CZE.
