Death Pact

The Death Pact is the binding agreement that compels Nick to do his best for Kugelblitz during the campaign against Anatomy while tying Vernon Melfion's survival to delivery of the promised support.

History

The Anatomy agreement

Vernon and Nick enter the pact because neither trusts the other to honor a conventional bargain under the operation's pressure. Vernon must secure the Elixir, ability access, equipment, and help promised by Kugelblitz; this obligation forces Aria Light to release resources she considers dangerously expensive. Nick, in turn, must act in Kugelblitz's interest until his role against Anatomy is complete. The pact manifests as an urgent threatening sensation when he tries to abandon a helpful action, compelling him to release a captive Specter even when he fears the consequences. The binding is literal but limited by its terms. It does not object once Nick has genuinely finished the assigned mission, and his life ceases to be connected to Vernon's after the agreement resolves. The pact therefore guarantees performance rather than reconciliation: Vernon and Nick remain enemies, and Nick expects Vernon to use what he learned against him once supernatural enforcement ends. Abilities and properties

• The pact compels conduct covered by its agreed terms and warns Nick when a refusal would violate the obligation. (Chapters 482–484)
• It binds both sides: Vernon's failure to provide promised support threatens his life, while Nick must make a genuine best effort for Kugelblitz. (Chapters 464–474)
• Its effect ends when the specified mission and reciprocal obligations are complete; it does not create lasting loyalty or prevent later conflict. (Chapters 485–487 and 790)
