The New Champion

The New Champion is the human selected to succeed the Old Champion of Light as Aegis's leader and the strongest human of his era. He begins as an inexperienced, insecure agent who believes the Sun protects humanity, but service alongside Aegis changes him into a genuine protector. After independently uncovering Nick's hidden resistance, he secretly helps it survive until his natural death. (Chapters 653–674, 799, 945–946, and 957)

Biography

Secrets of Humanity and the Sun

The New Champion is a successor, not a continuation of the Old Champion. He first appears publicly as a shining man who declares himself the new Champion, claims that his predecessor gave him the accumulated power, and releases a pulse felt around the world. At Aegis headquarters he bows before the Old Champion's body, turns it into white dust, and assumes command. Later evidence explains that the Sun had weakened the predecessor as punishment until this replacement was ready. The succession and worldwide disturbance are confirmed; the claimed mechanism of transferring the Old Champion's power remains uncertain. (Chapters 653, 674, 688, 737, and 771)

His first direct involvement with Nick comes when the Left Arm reveals her unauthorized Specter project. The Champion is skeptical because every Specter profits from human suffering, yet the project's results and the Left Arm's reputation for caution persuade him to investigate instead of destroying its subject. He personally questions Julian Winter about his motives, abilities, and future loyalty, permits a Barrier-bypass demonstration, and accepts cooperation only under the supervision of all seven Shields. This establishes a wary patronage: Nick gains institutional freedom, while the Champion retains the authority to end the experiment. (Chapters 673–675 and 698)

The Champion's public power is bound to his role as humanity's hope. When Death tests Aegis, he addresses the entire world, declares that humanity will survive, draws imperceptible rays from believing humans toward the Sun, and forms a golden sword before releasing a vast attack. The performance is both defense and political symbolism: humanity's hope produces a visible response while the successor wields the power inherited with his office. Yet he remains inexperienced with that power and tied to headquarters, leaving the Left Arm and Technician to manage many operations beyond his reach. (Chapters 693–694, 718, and 771)

That inexperience and his covert duty to the Sun shape the campaign against the Envious Researcher. He initially urges restraint against Specters, fearing retaliation and a war Aegis cannot win, but the Left Arm corners him into proving that he is humanity's Champion and then exploits his jealousy of his predecessor. Once committed, he does not deliberately miss: he helps refine Nick's targeting method, wears special glasses that translate Nick's perception into a private image, exposes the invisible Adversary with chaotic light, and kills it after the Left Arm briefly suppresses its escape. His pride in the victory coexists with the later revelation that the Sun had intended the Researcher's role to end. (Chapters 768–780)

The Sun then meets Nick in the Champion's office and appoints him as the Researcher's replacement. The Champion openly treats service to the Sun as a duty exceeding service to Aegis, accepting its story that it protects Earth and guides humanity's development. This belief distinguishes him from his predecessor: the Old Champion knew that he supervised a managed human population and rebelled, whereas the New Champion had been given a protective fiction and believed it. His presence also prevents surviving old Shields from safely sharing the truth, making his sincere loyalty an effective instrument of control even while he fights real threats to humanity. (Chapters 782–784 and 799)

Underground Liberation

The Champion allows Nick to choose how Aegis should attack Gluttony, trusting his efficiency while remaining suspicious of his nature. The resulting upheaval helps provoke Death and the Trio of Destruction into a direct assault on headquarters. The Champion burns away Famine's locusts and Pestilence's mist and possesses enough offense to kill an Adversary with a clean hit, but Death's darkness traps his light and prevents him from helping the other Shields. The Left Arm and Knife die creating the opening that lets his enraged beam cripple the attackers and leave Famine to be destroyed. (Chapters 800 and 809–810)

He responds to the losses first as Aegis's symbol, honoring the dead by name and converting grief into a promise that humanity can finally change its future. Privately, however, he is disheartened and dissatisfied with how little he accomplished while Death occupied him. Rather than conceal that weakness, he asks Nick how to become a better combatant and listens to practical advice about preparation, versatility, pressure, and breaking an enclosing darkness. The exchange reveals the beginning of his development from a ruler gifted overwhelming power into someone willing to learn how to use it. (Chapters 811–812)

Later crises continue to test his judgment. Discovering that Greed had infiltrated Aegis threatens his confidence because every new Shield requires his approval, but he accepts the Technician's argument that information must be shared and works with Nick on a plan to expose the traitor. When Aegis finally bargains with Nick for Death's suppression, the Champion weighs the loss of the Right Arm and Inferno against a path to the ninth level. He accepts the trade and refuses proposals to betray Nick during the operation, judging the Trickster too dangerous and believing future Saviors will eventually surpass him. (Chapters 824–833 and 905–906)

Nick's location intelligence lets the Shields surround Death underground, while the Champion's beam breaks the Adversary's dark veil and his strength closes the last escape route. Death concedes because it cannot defeat him in a duel while the other Shields block retreat. After verifying the captive, the Champion does not celebrate; he apologizes to the two Shields he has promised away and offers a sincere farewell. Nick recognizes that the once cold and ruthless leader now cares about his colleagues. By the time he reaches Peak Shield, his growing skill and the Sun-given Champion ability make him nearly unstoppable among contemporary humans. (Chapters 906–910)

The Final War and Humanity's Future

The Champion enters the Maw intending to become humanity's first level-nine Extractor. His Zephyx Synchronizer attunes to the Eternal, expanding his perception and making him the first Savior. He no longer regards the Old Champion as a rival but as an ancestor whose work made his own possible, and he hates that advancement has repeatedly required friends to die. When the Maw attacks, he chooses to fight beside the other Shields rather than feed them to it, using his new Domain of Light to strengthen allies, erase hostile tentacles, and help suppress the Eternal despite the heavy Zephyx cost. (Chapters 922 and 925–927)

Before that battle, the former Right Arm and Inferno confront him with questions about the Nightmare, the Null, and the Old Champion's opposition to the Sun. They then kill the Tinkerer and deliberately imitate mind-controlled servants, forcing the Champion to destroy them with his new domain. Their final question—whether their behavior sounds like the Technician's alleged enslavement—shakes his certainty. Although he completes the mission and accepts responsibility for being distracted, he can no longer reconcile the Sun's story with the voluntary sacrifices made by the Left Arm, Technician, and Nick's supposed puppets. (Chapters 922–925)

Instead of dismissing that doubt, the Champion spends ten years decrypting Aegis's obsolete database. He follows the Left Arm's final request to protect “Nick,” the hidden Liaison Program, missing researchers, the exchanged Fiend of Darkness, and the names Nick Nick, Nick Dusk, and Julian Winter. His investigation is self-directed and technically demanding; no resistance member gives him the conclusion. He reconstructs Nick's change from human to Specter, infers a technologically advanced underground population hidden from the Sun through the Nightmare, and realizes that Nick's actual objective is to destroy the Sun. (Chapters 941–943)

The two men communicate through successive volumes of a public fable. Nick explains that the current population cannot be saved, that he must survive the coming reset, and that a later humanity can defeat the overseers. The Champion answers by promising to appear to hunt him while secretly buying him time. This is his decisive break with the Sun: he cannot preserve his own era, but he can keep the resistance's infiltrator alive. He delays action against Nurse Alice under a plausible pretext and assists the very technological supervision he had once tried to obstruct. (Chapters 944–946)

More than two millennia into his life, the Champion becomes physically frail despite being a Savior; the rank does not extend his roughly 2,500-year human lifespan. His reign nevertheless leaves humanity with more than ten Saviors and a millennium without fear of Specters, while his continued public loyalty to the Sun keeps those powers from attacking it prematurely. At the end, he perceives Nick above the ocean, smiles in recognition, closes his eyes, and lets his Zephyx Synchronizer stop. Nick judges that the arrogant and insecure successor has surpassed the legacy he feared he could never equal. (Chapters 955–957)

Appearance and personality

The Champion is consistently presented as a shining human figure with a deep, authoritative voice. His throne hall and presence are associated with intense light, and his eyes turn white when he invokes the Domain of Light. The corpus does not give his personal name, facial features, hair color, or ordinary clothing, so the luminous public image should not be treated as a complete physical description. In extreme old age, he lies weakly on the throne with sunken eyes and barely enough Zephyx regeneration to remain conscious. (Chapters 673–674, 924, and 955–957)

Early in his reign, he is proud, suspicious, and painfully conscious of the Old Champion's reputation. Sudden inheritance of unmatched authority leaves him tactically inexperienced, and praise or comparison can expose his insecurity. He is not merely pretending to protect humanity, however: even while serving the Sun, he takes real risks against Specters, mourns Aegis's dead, and seeks instruction after failure. Continued contact with people willing to sacrifice themselves transforms his desire for prestige into the values attached to his office. (Chapters 769–771, 809–812, and 946)

His mature personality combines caution, responsibility, and moral independence. He can accept harsh trades when humanity's survival requires them, but he grows capable of apologizing to those sacrificed and rejects unnecessary betrayal. Most importantly, he investigates evidence that threatens the worldview granting him power and status, then chooses a future he will never see. Nick attributes that change to the culture created by the Old Champion: Aegis's self-sacrificing members teach the successor what the title is supposed to mean. (Chapters 905–907 and 941–946)

Abilities and Zephyx

The New Champion is a human Zephyx Extractor whose ordinary rank and inherited Champion ability are not equivalent. He is identified as a Mid Shield early in his reign, later demonstrates Late- and Peak-Shield power, and finally becomes a Savior by attuning to the Maw. The corpus establishes these states but does not narrate a sufficiently complete chronological sequence of his formal attainments for a public progression ladder. (Chapters 718, 906, 910, and 922)

Inherited Champion power and perception

The Sun selects the Champion and transfers the accumulated power associated with the office: the Left Arm says that the New Champion begins from the Old Champion's peak rather than reproducing centuries of work with the False Prophet. Humanity's hope visibly sends rays toward the Sun when he rallies the world, though the exact conversion from belief to usable force is not explained in these chapters. In practice, he is far stronger than another Extractor at the same formal level. His ascension produces a global effect, pushes Specters, and lets him recognize the aura of one he affected. (Chapters 674, 693, and 771)

His perception is commensurately exceptional. Even before becoming a Savior, he can monitor Nick closely enough that Nick uses his own ability's deactivation to detect observation. The Champion can also project his voice worldwide when rallying humanity. After attuning to the Maw, his perception expands until it can cover the entire planet, letting him inspect distant Containment Units and follow events without leaving headquarters. Strong isolation and the Maw's own flesh can still suppress or obstruct it, and covert resistance work depends on remaining where the Sun and Champion cannot see. (Chapters 693, 695–696, 741, 922, and 942)

Light weapons and ranged force

The Champion shapes light into a golden sword, narrow lasers, broad crescents, and enormous beams. Activation is generally immediate through a gesture, gaze, or sword swing; the resulting light burns masses of locusts, disperses poisonous mist and Death's darkness, severs the Envious Researcher's nerves, and can kill an Adversary if it lands cleanly. His largest pre-Savior beam is roughly a kilometer wide and damages War and Pestilence after the Knife opens Death to attack. These techniques combine precision with catastrophic area power, but their brightness and collateral destruction make them poor tools for covert action. (Chapters 693, 779–780, and 809–810)

Stealth and control are meaningful counters. The Envious Researcher cannot be targeted until Nick's custom glasses provide an image; the Champion first uses an iridescent laser to outline its invisible nervous system, then requires the Left Arm's brief suppression to land the killing crescent. Death can surround him with a dark veil and keep him occupied, and oceanic retreat remains protected by the Shark Mother and Salt Trident. His response is learned tactics: attack possible weak points, move pressure toward the controller, and use allies or external perception to prevent escape. (Chapters 768–780 and 809–812)

Domain of Light

Domain of Light appears after the Champion becomes a Savior. His eyes turn white and an irresistible field expands from his body. Against enemies, it erases matter so completely that the Right Arm, Inferno, and roughly two hundred meters of the Maw's surrounding flesh vanish; tentacles entering it are likewise reduced to nothingness. Against chosen allies, the same domain strengthens rather than destroys, allowing the Shields to fight inside it. This selectivity makes the domain simultaneously an area weapon, defense, and group enhancement. (Chapters 924–925)

The domain consumes Zephyx rapidly under sustained pressure. During the Maw battle, repeated tentacle attacks drain the Champion until he must deactivate the field to recover, briefly exposing the group while Star Grenades operate outside it. He therefore alternates activation with allied attacks and resource use instead of maintaining an invulnerable zone indefinitely. The ability is overwhelming against human-scale opponents, but an Eternal can force its user into a prolonged energy contest. (Chapter 925)

Leadership, analysis, and combat development

The Champion's non-supernatural strengths grow substantially across his reign. He begins dependent on inherited force, headquarters defenses, and the experience of the Left Arm and Technician. After Death neutralizes him, he asks Nick for instruction and incorporates preparation, movement, focused pressure, and knowledge of an opponent into later battles. By the capture of Death, he coordinates a seven-Shield encirclement, breaks the target's veil at the decisive moment, and refuses a tempting betrayal that would create an uncontrolled strategic risk. (Chapters 771, 809–812, and 905–906)

His technical and investigative ability also becomes exceptional. Centuries after the Technician's death, he builds machines capable of decrypting the obsolete Aegis database with Pure Energy and reconstructs Nick's conspiracy from edited records, historical gaps, mission logistics, and power-system constraints. This work does not make him omniscient: it takes ten years, begins only after others shake his assumptions, and still requires indirect dialogue with Nick to establish the resistance's future plan. (Chapters 941–945)

Relationships

• Old Champion of Light: His predecessor, whose stored power and institution he inherits. Early jealousy becomes reverence, and the Old Champion's values reach him indirectly through Aegis.
• Nick: Initially a useful but untrustworthy Specter subordinate, later a feared enemy, tactical adviser, and finally the hidden ally in whom the Champion places humanity's future.
• Left Arm: A veteran leader who can manipulate his insecurity but also teaches him through example; her death exposes his lack of combat experience and begins his growth.
• Technician: A senior colleague whose voluntary sacrifice becomes central evidence that Nick was never merely controlling Aegis's leadership.
• Sun: The overseer that selects him, grants the Champion role, and wins his sincere loyalty with a protective fiction. He later discovers the deception and covertly works against it.
• Death: His principal strategic opponent for much of his reign. Death can trap his light early on, but his later strength and Aegis's encirclement force it to surrender.
• Right Arm and Inferno: Shields he reluctantly trades to Nick; their later questions and deaths catalyze his rejection of the Sun's narrative.
