The Inferno
The Inferno is the tall, red-haired Shield appointed under Aegis's later Right Arm. He is not Byron Inferno, the earlier holder of the Right Arm office: “Inferno” is Byron's surname in Chapter 672 but a different man's title in Chapter 830, after Byron's death. The text supplies no continuity between them. (Chapters 672, 810, 830, and 834)
Biography
A hotheaded new Shield
The Inferno joins Aegis as a new Shield subordinate to the Right Arm, specializing in suppressing Force Specters with direct strength. When Nick tests the group for Greed's infiltration, the Inferno refuses unquestioning deference and publicly accuses the New Champion of serving the Sun. The outburst makes him unsuitable for the public-facing Right Arm office, but Nick's painful Specter-Zephyx test clears him of being Greed. His conflict with the Champion therefore reveals genuine political suspicion rather than infiltration, while his combat value keeps him among Aegis's front line. (Chapters 830–834)
Trade, resistance, and sacrifice
After becoming an Early Shield, the Inferno helps surround Death. Nick makes Death's surrender conditional on receiving the Inferno and Leonard Spark, and the Champion accepts rather than betray the Trickster during the exchange. Underground, the two learn enough of humanity's hidden condition to support Nick voluntarily. They later confront the Champion, attack the Tinkerer, and deliberately imitate brainwashed servants before asking whether that performance resembles the Technician's earlier sacrifice. The Champion's Domain erases both men, but their death plants doubt about the Sun and advances the resistance's longer plan. (Chapters 905–914 and 924)
Appearance and personality
The Inferno is a tall, slender man with bright red hair and a long lance on his back. He is hotheaded, confrontational, stalwart, and cockily confident in battle. Those traits cause political friction, yet they also make his final challenge to the Champion convincing: he voices forbidden questions without softening them and faces erasure with a grin. (Chapters 830–834, 905, and 924)
Abilities and Zephyx
The Inferno uses immense physical strength to suppress Force Specters and surrounds himself and his spear with fire during combat. Leonard's gentle light can strengthen that fire, showing a direct support interaction between their abilities. By the operation against Death he is an Early Shield. His power is still insufficient against the Champion's Domain of Light, which repels his attack and erases him completely. (Chapters 830, 906, and 924)
