The Maw
The Maw is an Eternal that abducts groups of similarly powerful Zephyx Extractors and forces them to fight. Unlike most Eternals, it can advance an Extractor's ability, making the lethal encounters a guarded route to otherwise unavailable power. (Chapters 9, 33, and 605–607)
Biography
A lethal path to advancement
Humanity first understands the Maw through the pattern of its abductions: it interacts only with Extractors, takes eight of comparable strength, destroys their Barriers, and leaves them to compete until one survivor remains. That threat also creates pressure to accept its attention, because it regularly supplies ability advancements no manufacturer can reproduce. Nick is abducted when ready to advance; although his Half-Specter nature initially prevents attunement, he manipulates his Core, connects to the Maw, survives its arena, and receives a useful improvement. The end of the Eternal
Once humanity has enough Shields to challenge it, Aegis deliberately brings the New Champion into the Maw so he can become a Savior. The Maw responds instinctively by attacking the intruders with its body and Core rather than negotiating, while the Champion strengthens his allies and refuses to sacrifice them to its usual selection process. After the group suppresses the Eternal, Nick enters its Core and destroys it with the Sun's permission. The Maw's death removes the restriction that had kept the number of Shields near seven and opens the way for a much larger Savior generation. (Chapters 922–927 and 934)
Appearance and personality
The Maw is a gigantic mass of flesh covered in eyes, tentacles, and multiple mouths. Its arena and body behave as parts of one biological mechanism. The text presents it as almost entirely instinctual: it seeks the special Zephyx created by desperate Extractor conflict, but shows little evidence of planning, speech, or humanlike emotion. Abilities and Zephyx
The Maw can abduct Extractors who are ready for an ability advancement, isolate them inside a flesh arena, strip away Barrier protection, and compel a contest while permitting retained weapons. It feeds on the unusual Zephyx generated by that conflict and can alter the survivor's encoded ability. Its selection is limited to Extractors and usually to a group of eight comparable candidates; its power also becomes vulnerable when several Shield-level combatants suppress its body and expose the Core to Nick. Relationships
- Nick: The Maw advances Nick's ability after he forces an attunement, but Nick later destroys its Core to free humanity from its selection pressure. (Chapters 605–607 and 926)
- New Champion: The Champion uses the Maw to become a Savior, then rejects its demand for a lone survivor and helps suppress it. (Chapters 922–927)
- Sun: The Sun authorizes Nick to kill the Maw once the Eternal has served the advancement plan imposed on humanity. (Chapter 926)
