Sophia Vorkova
Biography
A defeat that became a grudge
Sophia entered the Azure Dragon study group's practical interview as a recognizable RIL cadet, carrying both the prestige of Russia's leading hunter organization and doubts that she had been recruited chiefly for publicity. Her unbeaten interview record quickly answered the latter suspicion. Fighting barehanded, she redirected Yeorum's wooden sword with her palms and arms, but Yeorum's greater control reduced the contest to a prolonged beating that Sophia was too proud and excited to concede. (Chapter 14)
Even after suffering multiple broken bones, Sophia rejected the referee's stoppage and Mihailov's attempt to restrain her. When the defeat was declared, she seized Mihailov's defensive dagger, charged back into the ring, and cut beside Yeorum's eye with a mana-infused ambush intended to kill. Yeorum retaliated just as violently, leaving officials and guardians to separate them and turning their first meeting into a personal feud rather than an ordinary competitive loss. (Chapters 14–15)
Later, Sophia encountered Yeorum again in a Lair elevator and offered an awkward apology for the ambush. The apology lacked warmth, but their shared bluntness and profanity dissolved the immediate hostility. Sophia admitted that ridicule over her loss had strengthened her need to prove herself, challenged Yeorum to a rematch once both reached single-digit campus ranks, and warned her not to expose a prized technique in recorded matches. Their grudge thus became a rivalry with rules and a measure of mutual respect. (Chapter 103)
The Losties become a team
Sophia's new familiarity with Yeorum first appeared as public teasing, including an official social-media jab and a joking claim that she disliked her. It was tested more seriously when Yu Jitae assembled Sophia, Yeorum, Hisaki Soujiro, and Kim Ji-in for an underground-fissure raid. Sophia resented being called baggage, while Mihailov described her as an RIL prodigy whose temper had left her isolated even within the organization, but she accepted the team and its demanding preparation. (Chapters 106, 111–112)
During route planning, Sophia argued against Yeorum's reckless preference for a monster-filled corridor and helped the group settle on a viable alternative. The same preparation exposed her own limits: recorded footage showed Yong Taeha defeating her by exploiting the oversized movements behind her quick reactions and by trapping her rapier so that Refraction could not activate. Three days of tactical drills under twenty times normal gravity pushed even Sophia close to vomiting, yet she remained engaged and reassured Yeorum while the group waited for Jitae at the raid entrance. (Chapters 113–116)
Inside the fissure, Sophia and Yeorum led the formation, with Sophia piercing orcs' eyes and throats and creating openings for Yeorum. Their tempers still collided over whether the team should rush, but they honored a prearranged game of rock-paper-scissors to resolve the dispute. Against the Spider Queen, Sophia used Refraction to shield the ranged fighters and repeatedly intercept attacks aimed at Yeorum, even cutting through her own poisoned shoulder rather than hesitate. Afterward, she ignored the wound long enough to force a potion into Yeorum's mouth and berate her for endangering the team alone. (Chapters 119, 121–123)
Ranking pressure and Team Mochi
Their rivalry continued when Yeorum addressed Sophia as seventh in Lair's campus rankings, but it increasingly served as friendship rather than hostility. Sophia later brought food and coffee when Yeorum isolated herself after punishment, correctly anticipating that she would neglect eating. She also explained how elite cadets manipulated matchmaking and revealed a private top-ten chat that coordinated schedules to avoid dangerous opponents. Sophia had refused its invitation because she considered the arrangement dishonest, then helped identify Zhou Luxun's deliberate attempt to counter Yeorum. (Chapters 145, 152–153)
Sophia remained conscious of reputation and advancement. She socialized with Yeorum at the festival, wearing cat makeup with the RIL delegation and readily joining the household's casual banter, but later bristled at publicity surrounding the proposed Five Transcendent Cadets because she wanted one of those places herself. When the group reunited as Team Mochi, Yeorum reported that Sophia had failed the selection test, been rejected by Team Lair, and reacted with a knife until Mihailov stopped her. Her black eye and continued participation showed the immediate aftermath, though Sophia did not personally confirm Yeorum's account. (Chapters 180, 225, 253)
Before Team Mochi's first Association mission, Sophia admitted that constant demands to try harder had become unbearable because she already felt driven to the edge. Even so, she still wanted to become a world ranker and embraced the RIL ideal of a hunting dog that rises with its weapon after every fall. Yeorum's severe encouragement reached her more effectively than reassurance, and Sophia entered the mission able to joke again. Later, she and Yeorum used Sophia's official account to answer public criticism of their rising team, whose estimated team rank reached fifth. (Chapters 254, 268)
Appearance and personality
Sophia is a Caucasian girl with a pale complexion and buoyant light-brown hair, sometimes described by others as blonde. Her cold beauty and recognizable face made her a useful public figure for RIL even before Lair, though her entrance performance established that she was more than a promotional recruit. At the school festival she appeared with cat ears, a tail, and feline face paint as part of RIL's costume theme. (Chapters 14, 103, 180)
Pride and volatility define Sophia's early conduct. She treats surrender as humiliation, can become violent when her status is threatened, and often uses profanity or provocative jokes. Her tolerance of injury comes from extreme excitement and RIL conditioning rather than an established immunity to pain. Over time, the same stubbornness develops into competitive integrity and loyalty: she rejects rank manipulation, accepts team decisions she dislikes, shields weaker teammates, and tends to Yeorum while wounded herself. (Chapters 14, 103, 121–123, 153)
Her ambition is inseparable from pressure. Sophia craves proof that she is strong and wants a world ranking, yet she also recognizes that relentless expectations have brought her close to collapse. She responds poorly to gentle consolation but understands Yeorum's equally abrasive honesty, allowing rivalry, humor, and shared effort to keep her moving after public and private failures. (Chapters 103, 253–254)
Powers and abilities
Refraction
Sophia's named blessing, Refraction, operates through her rapier and allows its thrust to abandon an ordinary physical trajectory. She can change the weapon's angle and speed partway through an attack, turning an apparent miss into a sudden strike from an impossible direction. She uses the same principle defensively, bending consecutive movements to intercept numerous small enemies and block several tentacles in rapid succession. Her origin and acquisition of the blessing are not established. (Chapters 113, 122)
Refraction is powerful but conditional. Yong Taeha prevented it by catching Sophia's rapier between his crossguard and blade, showing that the blade must remain free to redirect. Repeated use consumes her power and imposes visible strain; during the Spider Queen battle, she performed five consecutive redirections, while an observer warned that such repetition was dangerous for her heart. No precise reserve, range, cooldown, or lasting upgrade is established, and her latest demonstrated form remains the same trajectory-changing blessing. (Chapters 113, 122)
Rapier combat and reactions
Sophia has remarkable reaction speed and is a capable front-line rapier fighter. She aims efficiently at vulnerable points such as throats and eyes, can neutralize targets for an ally to finish, and combines Refraction with conventional thrusts to create deceptive attack lines. Against an elite technician, however, her defensive motions were too large: Yong Taeha accumulated the tiny delays created by each parry, controlled the exchange, and ultimately knocked her from the arena. (Chapters 113, 119)
Her first fight with Yeorum also shows competent unarmed combat. Wearing only training gloves, Sophia read the path of a wooden sword, deflected it with the backs of her hands and arms, and countered with punches and kicks. The exchange also demonstrates a central limitation: determination does not prevent bodily damage. Broken bones, poison, blood loss, and shoulder injuries still affect her even when excitement or discipline lets her continue fighting. (Chapters 14, 122–123)
Endurance and teamwork
RIL's training culture emphasizes pain resistance through deliberately harsh conditioning, and Sophia can function through injuries that would stop many cadets. She also endures compressed high-gravity preparation and remains effective during a prolonged boss raid. Her endurance is not limitless or effortless, however; the training makes her nearly vomit, and severe psychological pressure eventually contributes to a reported self-destructive episode after the transcendent-cadet selection. (Chapters 14, 114, 253)
As a team fighter, Sophia contributes more than durability. She analyzes routes, accepts an agreed method for resolving disputes, protects ranged allies, and coordinates closely with Yeorum in the vanguard. These habits let her convert an initially destructive rivalry into reliable battlefield cooperation. Her last demonstrated role is as a member of Team Mochi entering Association work as a newborn superhuman, without a confirmed individual world rank. (Chapters 113, 119, 121–123, 254–268)
Relationships
Yeorum
Yeorum begins as the opponent who defeats and humiliates Sophia, provoking her attempted ambush. Their later apology, shared temperament, and mutual ambition transform that hostility into a fierce friendship. They still insult and challenge each other, but Sophia protects Yeorum in battle, brings her food when she withdraws, exposes attempts to manipulate her matches, and trusts Yeorum's blunt encouragement when ordinary reassurance fails. (Chapters 14, 103, 122–123, 145, 152–153, 254)
Mihailov
Mihailov is Sophia's guardian and RIL handler. He attempts to stop her entrance spar, restrains her after the defeat, and is embarrassed by her volatility, yet continues supervising her training and team activity. Yeorum later reports that he physically stopped Sophia from harming herself after her failed selection, indicating that his protection includes containing the impulses created by her pride and pressure. (Chapters 14, 103, 112–114, 253)
Team Mochi
Hisaki Soujiro and Kim Ji-in first become Sophia's teammates in the underground-fissure assignment. Sophia's initial frustration with the weaker cadets gives way to protecting them and honoring collective decisions. The four later reunite as Team Mochi, where their shared history supports Sophia through a period of personal failure and into their first Association mission. Yu Jitae's punishing preparation and tactical oversight are central to that transition. (Chapters 112–123, 152–153, 253–254)
Items
- Rapier: Sophia's primary weapon. It is the medium through which she applies Refraction, although it can be immobilized by an opponent who traps the blade. (Chapters 113, 119, 122)
- Protective necklace: A Level 1 protective artifact supplied for the underground-fissure assignment. The first set issued to the team was defective and replaced before the raid. It is mission equipment rather than a confirmed permanent possession. (Chapter 114)
- Mihailov's defensive dagger: Sophia briefly took the dagger from Mihailov's waist and used it in her ambush on Yeorum; it is not established as her own weapon. (Chapter 14)
