Su Yan
Su Yan is an Ancient Realm Chosen associated with the Eighth Mountain whose failed attempt to extort Meng Hao among the black beetles leaves her traveling as his captive companion. Her Seven Hellgod Steps later reveal a deeper connection to the Devil Realm Continent.
Biography
Black beetles in the Ruins
Su Yan meets Meng Hao while both are trying to profit from the black beetles of the Ruins of Immortality. She says that she awakened on the Eighth Mountain and is passing through the Ninth, but the supplied chapters do not identify her as a Ninth Sect disciple. She can make her body nearly transparent to the insects, causing the swarm to ignore her and turn on Meng Hao. Rather than escaping when the trick succeeds, she follows to watch him suffer and plans to extort his medicinal plants and spirit-immortal stones. Meng Hao survives, takes control of part of the swarm, and chases her through the Ruins with hundreds of enormous beetles behind him. (Chapters 1030–1032)
Her mistake is compounded when she fights instead of disengaging. Although she has extinguished only one Soul Lamp, her Ancient Realm foundation and personal Dao make her a generational Chosen: the Seven Hellgod Steps collapse Meng Hao's incomplete Paragon Bridge, and a costly roar injures him and scatters the beetles. Meng Hao uses the Lightning Cauldron to exchange their positions, activates a Nirvana Fruit, seals her cultivation, and confines her in his bag of holding. Her cold smile makes clear that capture has not produced submission. Their relationship begins as a battle between two opportunists, not as voluntary discipleship. (Chapters 1032–1035)
Captive companion
Su Yan is drawn into Meng Hao's increasingly bizarre traveling group with the parrot, Meat Jelly, puppet, Demonic cultivators, and other captives. The parrot subjects her to humiliating “training,” while the Meat Jelly offers relentless moral instruction. She remains defiant enough to argue with Meng Hao about the limits of the Immortal Realm when his Echelon mark deepens, and her knowledge becomes useful: Meng Hao later deploys the Seven God Steps, a divine ability obtained from her, against Han Qinglei. (Chapters 1044, 1048, 1054–1060, 1099)
The passage into the Windswept Realm places Su Yan in real danger. Its law permits only nine entrants from each Sea, and the excess people hidden in Meng Hao's bag are struck by exterminating thunder. His Life-Death Hex cannot safely protect Su Yan or Chu Yuyan, so he must resolve the crisis without treating them as expendable cargo. Su Yan, who had earlier acted unafraid of death, becomes visibly terrified; Meng Hao suspects that her fear reflects a secret connection rather than a simple change of heart. She survives and remains with the group through the Sixth Nation conflict. (Chapters 1083–1090)
Connection to the Devil Realm
That secret is exposed during the destruction of the Mountain and Sea Realm. A rugged expert from the Devil Realm Continent uses the same Seven God Steps, allowing Meng Hao to infer a connection. Meng Hao produces Su Yan as leverage when the expert pursues him, and the man's response confirms that she matters to him. During the Parrot and Meat Jelly's final teleportation rescue, the expert targets Meng Hao's bag rather than Meng Hao himself and retrieves Su Yan. The supplied text ends her arc with liberation by someone from her deeper lineage, not with continued service to her captor. (Chapters 1407–1408)
Appearance and personality
Su Yan is a beautiful young woman in pink robes, with a beauty mark beside her mouth. Her expressions move between crafty confidence, anger, concealed shock, and eventual fear. Her stealth technique leaves a faint transparent outline rather than making her completely invisible.
She is proud, opportunistic, and slow to display vulnerability. Even after Meng Hao seals her, she maintains a cold smile instead of pleading. Her decision to follow the beetles simply to enjoy his predicament shows a vindictive streak that contributes directly to her capture. Captivity does not erase her judgment: she argues with Meng Hao, observes his transformations critically, and survives the absurdities of his companions without becoming a comic caricature herself.
Abilities and cultivation
Ancient Realm cultivation
Su Yan has extinguished one Soul Lamp in the Ancient Realm. She is not an ordinary cultivator at that stage: the narration compares her status within the Ancient Realm to a true Immortal within the Immortal Realm, meaning her personal Dao and foundation let her fight far beyond what one extinguished lamp would normally imply. She can initially exchange attacks evenly with Meng Hao, but pressure from his beetles and Nirvana Fruit activation removes that balance. (Chapters 1032–1033)
Insect-avoidance transparency
She can make her body nearly transparent so black beetles cease recognizing her as a target. The outline remains visible to cultivators, and the technique is concealment from the swarm rather than universal invisibility. (Chapter 1031)
Black-beetle harvesting
Su Yan understands the insects' behavior and attempts to collect or direct them. Her control is inferior to the mass response Meng Hao provokes, and hundreds of beetles become the force that drives her retreat. (Chapters 1030–1033)
Seven Hellgod Steps
Each successive step raises Su Yan's energy and tramples the opponent's thoughts, cultivation circulation, and life flame. The fifth step distorts the surrounding world; the seventh manifests an enormous savage foot capable of destroying 123 Blood Demon heads and collapsing Meng Hao's then-incomplete Paragon Bridge. The sequence also leaves Su Yan pale and bleeding, so it is a high-output escalation rather than effortless movement. Meng Hao later learns and uses the related Seven God Steps, and a Devil Realm expert's use of the same inheritance exposes Su Yan's deeper origin. (Chapters 1032, 1099 and 1407)
Savage roar and escape methods
Su Yan can absorb surrounding energy and release a roar whose sound waves shred the void, injure Meng Hao's hearing, and push him and the beetles backward. The technique exacts a visible price in blood and pallor. She can also accelerate toward a void tunnel, while her insect-avoidance transparency specifically suppresses the beetles' ability to recognize her aura. Neither method is universal escape: the Lightning Cauldron lets Meng Hao switch positions with her before the tunnel completes. (Chapters 1031–1032)
Survival under sealing
She endures restrictive spells, travel inside a bag of holding, the Windswept Realm's exclusion thunder, and the Parrot's coercive training. Endurance is not immunity—the realm's thunder nearly kills her—but it allows her to survive until rescue.
Relationships
- Meng Hao: Rival who captures her and draws her into his traveling party.
- Parrot: Tormentor and trainer during her captivity.
- Li Ling'er: Present with her during the party's passage through the Ruins.
- Devil Realm expert: Rugged cultivator who shares her Seven God Steps inheritance and ultimately retrieves her from Meng Hao.
Items
- No independently notable item is directly assigned to Su Yan; the black beetles are contested living resources rather than her personal property.
