Shadow Supreme

The Shadow Supreme is Zarek, the current ruler of the Shadow World and the being behind its trials. He creates the Abyss Mirror from part of his true body, later cultivates Necromancy, and tries to escape the Dao by entering the True World. He is distinct from both Arthur's Shadow and the previous Eon's Shadow Supreme, Barbatos.

Biography

Trials in the World of Treacherous Shadows

Zarek first acts through the Shadow World's Gatekeepers when Neo Hargraves and Jack Hanma arrive. The offered agreement is coercive despite its promise of generosity: entrants who accept must survive a trial and may request one wish, while those who refuse are treated as intruders and killed. Neo and Jack accept and are placed in a complete Synchro reconstruction of the Age of Gods, built from histories recorded by Shadows. (Chapters 204–205 and 238–240)

The trial is also a way for Zarek to draw Neo into a personal audience. He prevents Neo's contracted Shadows from leaving the Shadow Windows, knowing their absence will push the original toward the Shadow World, and his Gatekeeper openly attributes that design to Neo's cursed bloodline. Zarek nevertheless honors individual outcomes: Jack asks to return to the reconstructed world and receives that reward, while Neo's centuries of resistance earn recognition without making him mistake borrowed strength for his own achievement. Totality and the Abyss Mirror

After clearing the trial, Neo rejects wealth and borrowed power and asks to witness Zarek's true strength. Zarek first offers a safer manifestation, then responds to Neo's insistence by revealing a form described as Totality: a presence shifting through every object and extending beyond the apparent universe. His voice breaks worlds and his will restores them. Neo endures through Eternal, but the encounter destroys his sight and becomes the standard of power he intends to surpass. (Chapters 331–332)

Zarek rewards that defiance by condensing part of his true body into an ink-like sphere. The object is later identified as the Abyss Mirror, a Sacred Treasure whose resonance can reproduce techniques and raise their effective quality. The Mirror is not Zarek himself, a prison holding him, or a version of Arthur's Shadow; it is a created extension that he calls his child. This distinction becomes decisive when Neo eventually tries to devour it. (Chapters 331–332, 451–474, and 638)

Two Shadow Supremes and a reclaimed child

A second holder of the Shadow Supreme title appears at the Sacred Gate in the Voraka Site. His Intent resembles Barbatos's, but Primogenitor explicitly identifies the guardian as an Ashborn from a previous Eon and distinguishes him from the current Supreme who gave Neo the Mirror. The forbidden name Barbatos belongs to that former holder. Current-Eon Zarek identifies himself by name later, so the two titleholders' histories cannot be combined. (Chapters 612, 614, 625, 630, and 638)

When Neo attempts to consume the Abyss Mirror for its knowledge, Zarek threatens him for harming what he regards as his child. The Universal Will prevents an immediate killing, and Cole Calloway brokers an exchange: Zarek recovers the Mirror's core, Neo keeps its accumulated knowledge, and Zarek receives a favor from Cole. Neo suspects that Zarek engineered the earlier gift and confrontation to obtain that leverage, but the text presents this as Neo's interpretation rather than a confirmed confession from Zarek. (Chapters 637–639)

Necromancy and flight from the Dao

Zarek reenters the main war through the Hanma God Relic, another of his Sacred Treasures. Jack uses it as a gate and offers his own existence in return for Zarek's intervention. Jack accuses the Supreme of greed for Necromancy and of reducing Shadow users to Technique Sources, yet proceeds because the battlefield leaves him no acceptable alternative. Zarek descends, kills the opposing Gods, and takes Jack's existence and body as the agreed price. (Chapters 756–760)

Zarek later spends Cole's favor to borrow one true attack from the Entity and kills Ultris. The attack does not become Zarek's permanent strength. His lasting project is Necromancy: by the end he has cultivated partial Authority, raises dead Supremes and Ultris as puppets, and controls the dead held inside Moraine. He wants that army both as power and as a means to escape a Dao he knows can govern even Supremes. (Chapters 787, 829, and 831–832)

Neo opens a passage to the True World, and Zarek abandons most of the puppets while taking Jack with him. Crossing the boundary does not free him from the Dao. Neo tears Jack out of Zarek's shadow body, releases the corpses, and strips away the partial Necromancy Authority on which the escape depended. He then leaves Zarek a Necromancy Elemental Seed and five golems before Cole expels him into the dangerous void between True Worlds. Zarek survives, but as an isolated fugitive rather than the untouchable ruler who first received Neo. (Chapters 831–834)

Appearance and personality

Zarek's ordinary manifestations do not convey the scale of his true body. When Neo insists on seeing it, the Supreme appears as an all-encompassing Totality whose surface moves through the forms of every object and whose size exceeds the universe Neo can perceive. The audience blinds Neo even though Zarek restores the worlds shattered by his voice. Later scenes show smaller incarnations suitable for conversation and combat, underscoring that the cosmic body is not his only usable presentation. (Chapters 331–332 and 787)

He is patient, theatrical, and transactional. Zarek allows the Gatekeepers to frame a lethal agreement as generosity, gives rewards that preserve his connection to their recipients, and waits for bargains to produce advantages far beyond their immediate terms. His anger over the Abyss Mirror is genuine enough for him to call it his child, but affection does not prevent him from exchanging its knowledge for leverage over Cole. (Chapters 204, 270–271, and 637–639)

Fear and acquisitiveness become clearer near the ending. Zarek is willing to use Jack's body, desecrate Ultris's corpse, and turn dead Supremes into an army because he believes escape is the only viable answer to the Dao. His long preparation demonstrates foresight, but the attempt also exposes a limit to his confidence: once Neo destroys the plan, Zarek is reduced to bargaining for a seed and accepting exile in a place neither he nor Cole presents as safe. Powers and limitations

Shadow supremacy and the Shadow World

As Supreme of Shadows, Zarek rules a World that records the histories experienced by Shadows. He can use those records to construct fully synchronized trials, retain contracted Shadows inside Shadow Windows, and act through Gatekeepers who administer his agreements. His authority over that domain is vast but not identical to ownership of every being called a Shadow; Arthur's Shadow remains a separate character, while the previous Eon's Supreme is a separate titleholder. (Chapters 204–205, 238–240, 270, 614, and 630)

Totality and Sacred Treasures

Zarek's true manifestation can encompass the visible universe, break worlds through speech, and restore what it destroys. He can divide part of that body into a Sacred Treasure, as he does when creating the Abyss Mirror. The Mirror reproduces techniques through resonance, but its independent artifact functions should not be treated as Zarek performing every copied technique in person. The Hanma God Relic likewise serves as his Treasure and a gate for descent rather than as proof that its custodian owns Zarek's power. (Chapters 331–332, 474, and 756–759)

Necromancy

Zarek develops Necromancy to partial Authority and uses it to animate dead Supremes, Ultris's corpse, and the dead contained within Moraine. Each resurrection increases the strength available to him, but the system depends on control that Neo can sever. Once the corpses are released and Jack is extracted, the cultivated Authority is lost. The Elemental Seed Neo supplies afterward preserves basic future access; it does not instantly restore the former corpse network or partial Authority. (Chapters 831–834)

Borrowed attack and structural limits

The attack that kills Ultris is borrowed for a single use through Cole's favor from the Entity. Zarek describes himself afterward as a normal, comparatively young Supreme, so the feat cannot be used as evidence that he permanently possesses the Entity's full force. More fundamentally, reaching the True World does not place him outside the Dao. His failed escape shows that cosmic location and immense elemental status do not by themselves break the system governing him. (Chapters 787, 829, and 834)

Neo Hargraves

Zarek deliberately draws Neo into the Shadow World, rewards his refusal of easy power, and gives him the artifact that later anchors their conflict. Neo admires the scale of Zarek's strength without trusting his motives. Their final encounter reverses the original audience: Neo is now able to break Zarek's necromantic control, recover Jack, and decide the terms under which the Supreme leaves, although he still gives Zarek enough power to face exile alive. (Chapters 270, 331–332, 637–639, and 831–834)

Jack Hanma

Jack first receives the trial reward he asks for, but their later agreement is far harsher. He carries Zarek's relic, condemns the Supreme's treatment of Shadow users, and nevertheless sacrifices his own existence to secure intervention. Zarek takes the bargain literally and keeps Jack even while abandoning his other puppets. Neo's extraction of Jack in the True World finally ends that custody and deprives Zarek of the body he tried to carry into exile. (Chapters 271, 756–760, and 831–834)

Cole Calloway

Cole prevents the Abyss Mirror dispute from ending in Neo's immediate death and trades a favor for an exchange acceptable to both sides. Zarek later spends that favor to obtain the Entity's single true attack against Ultris. Their relationship is therefore contractual rather than loyal: Cole supplies leverage through a promise, while Zarek converts that promise into a decisive but temporary weapon. (Chapters 638–639 and 787)

Barbatos

Barbatos is the Shadow Supreme from the previous Eon, not an alias for Zarek. The shared title and matching Shadow domain create deliberate ambiguity around the Sacred Gate, but Primogenitor's explanation and Zarek's later self-identification resolve it. Their separate actions show that succession to the same Supreme role does not make the holders one continuous person. (Chapters 612, 614, 630, and 638)

Items

Zarek creates and initially owns the Abyss Mirror, gives it to Neo, and later reclaims its core through Cole's bargain while Neo keeps its knowledge. The artifact is Zarek's created child and bodily extension, not a sentient resident identical to him. (Chapters 331–332, 474, and 637–639)

The Hanma God Relic is also identified as Zarek's Sacred Treasure, although Jack carries and activates it. Jack's custody does not make him the owner: he uses the relic as a gate through which Zarek can descend and then pays for that intervention with his own existence. (Chapters 756–759)
