Reishi Senyu

Reishi Senyu is a merfolk merchant who develops from an apprentice traveling under his father into the owner of the archipelago's largest trading company. His long-running partnership with Kai Tylenn supplies Kai with markets, laboratories, transport, information, and financial protection, while repeatedly turning a commercial connection into one of Kai's oldest friendships. Biography

Merchant in the archipelago

Reishi first meets Kai in a Greenside trading tent while his father Sehn lets him conduct negotiations for experience. He appraises Kai's low-tier potions, haggles over their price, and recognizes that the young apothecary can produce useful goods despite his humble market. Rather than treat the encounter as a single sale, Reishi offers recipes and ingredients for a commission, taking the risk that Kai can complete a much larger order before the merchants depart. Kai delivers nearly all of it at better quality than expected, so Reishi gives him alchemy books as a calculated investment. That decision establishes a supply relationship that continues as both of them advance. (Chapters 34–40)

By their reunion in Sylspring, Reishi has chosen to remain in the archipelago, built local contacts, and acquired three vessels while Sehn pursues other routes. He turns Kai's irregular potion sales into a more structured enterprise by renting and furnishing a laboratory, purchasing production equipment, arranging ingredients, and negotiating distribution through Selly's established shop. Reishi is demanding enough to impose extra shifts when Kai vanishes without warning, yet he also worries that Kai has been kidnapped and offers protection against the Republic's attention. After the rebel raid, his contacts confirm an official investigation; he deliberately refuses compromising details that a truthteller might extract and advises Kai to appear unremarkable rather than merely innocent. Silver Edge and family counsel

Reishi's business expands beyond Sylspring to Higharbor and the mainland-facing trade network. He continues sourcing materials for Kai, shares practical warnings about contracts and dangerous offers, and provides transport aboard the Silver Edge. When the ship returns Kai to Sylspring, Reishi personally watches the docking to protect its hull and jokes that an expensive vessel is worthwhile because he can show it to friends, before remaining behind to supervise the cargo. The exchange captures both sides of his development: he has become an independent owner with crews and capital, but he still expresses friendship through useful services and the language of trade. For Kai's twelfth birthday, Reishi gives him Lyliana Lyveli's Diary, an old alchemical volume whose recipes can expand both Kai's craft and their shared business. When Kai immediately asks about prenatal enhancement elixirs for his family, Reishi drops the teasing salesmanship, explains that such elixirs are regulated strategic resources, and insists that the legal and mortal risks be understood. He is willing to make discreet inquiries for accessible red-grade options, but refuses to promise availability or a price before consulting his contacts. His counsel keeps Kai's urgency from becoming a blind purchase and demonstrates that Reishi can place safety and informed consent ahead of an easy transaction. (Chapters 182–183)

After Kai's return

When Kai reappears after being presumed dead, Reishi brings him aboard the Silver Edge, dismisses his crew, tears up their broken alchemy contract, and avoids asking questions that would destroy plausible deniability about the Republic's operations. Kai then entrusts him with an enormous cache of rare treasures. Reishi can identify or value much of the hoard and has every practical opportunity to exploit an officially dead owner, but instead reduces his proposed fee, warns Kai that the wealth could attract murder, and drafts a contract binding the deal to House Tajira and his own right to return to Kesyu. His honesty converts their long commercial association into explicitly tested trust and gives his company the capital to establish a mainland foothold. (Chapters 243–245)

By the time Kai reaches Raelion, Reishi has expanded inland despite finding travel away from the sea inconvenient. He reports the sales from Kai's cache, returns the proceeds after his agreed commission, warns that investment still carries risk, and accepts a new sum only after Kai confirms the decision. He also explains the academy's patrician politics, holds Kai's Spatial Ring so Kai can obey the entrance-test ban on enchanted equipment, and gifts him rare tea for academy life. Reishi's growth is therefore not merely accumulated wealth: his routes, staff, warded offices, and profession make him a dependable bridge between Kai's isolated origins and the mainland economy. Appearance and personality

Reishi is covered in small blue to blue-gray scales, with gills at his neck, two narrow nasal openings, pale blue eyes, webbed cold hands, sharp manicured nails, thin blue lips, pointed teeth, and a colorful crest running from his head down his neck. He grows from an angular teenage merchant into a taller adult and favors luxurious embroidered silk, enchanted clothing, and conspicuously expensive tea. Reishi is proud, competitive, theatrical, and relentless in negotiation, but he offers honest valuations when the stakes matter and becomes sharply protective when Kai's safety is at risk. His humor and greed are genuine rather than mutually exclusive: he enjoys wealth and display, yet rejects robbing a friend even when the profit could double his fortune. Travel inland is physically inconvenient for him, though he explicitly rejects the idea that a merfolk will wither away from the sea. (Chapters 34–40, 89, 243–245, and 319)

Skills, magic, and the Guide

Merchant profession and negotiation

Reishi's Guide-granted merchant profession supports bargaining, market judgment, and the management of a growing trade network, but the corpus does not name its individual negotiation skills. During a difficult bargain, Kai senses unexplained pulses in the surrounding mana while Reishi mixes emotional performance with accurate market claims; Kai can neither identify the effect nor prove that every persuasive tactic is magical. Reishi still needs prices, contacts, contracts, crews, and distribution partners, and he can misjudge production speed or lack expertise in services outside his market. The source conflicts on his formal grades: Chapter 34 already places his race at the second stage of Orange with a type-one profession; Chapter 89 nevertheless says that both race and profession advanced, “reaching Orange and orange grade”; and Chapter 98 later describes his race as orange and profession as red. The progression table preserves the required Chapter 89 reading without inventing an explanation for those incompatible observations. (Chapters 34, 89, 98, and 119–125)

Appraisal and commercial analysis

Reishi examines potions and artifacts through extremely fine mana tendrils, scaling from a few barely visible filaments in his youth to hundreds when assessing Kai's Sanctuary hoard. These skills let him determine crafting quality, probable effects, affinities, uses, and market value, sometimes with the aid of a magnifying glass or enchanted monocle. They are specialized appraisal techniques rather than unrestricted mana control. Their limits are explicit: Reishi does not recognize roughly half of Kai's stranger items, cannot immediately price Astral Dust on an ordinary open market, and must locate suitable collectors or auction houses before converting rare goods into money. His estimates also depend on commercial knowledge and available buyers, not perfect identification supplied by the Guide. (Chapters 34, 97–98, and 244–245)

Merfolk traits, knowledge, and security

Reishi's Orange merfolk race gives him sufficient physical strength to make an early handshake uncomfortable and eyes that need little artificial light aboard ship. His water affinity measures at about forty points on a Water Sphere, which he calls average for a merfolk; the sphere itself has roughly a five-point interpretive range, so the scene does not support a more exact affinity. He demonstrates broad knowledge of professions, enchanting, laws, currencies, shipping, and mainland institutions, but the text does not identify combat spells, a weapon style, or a combat profession. He relies on hired guards, crews, contracts, concealed storage, and wards that can attack an intruder and alert others if he is harmed. Those arrangements are material and organizational protections, not evidence that Reishi personally casts every enchantment aboard his ships or offices. • Kai Tylenn: Reishi first treats Kai as a promising producer, then funds his laboratory, sells his potions, advises him through political danger, transports him, and manages his wealth. Their habit of aggressive haggling persists, but the treasure contract proves that neither friendship nor trust depends on Kai remaining commercially useful. • Sehn: Reishi begins under his father's supervision and repeatedly quotes, mocks, or adapts Sehn's merchant lessons. He chooses to remain in the archipelago when Sehn takes the Fortuna toward the Golden Coast, making the region's rapid growth the foundation of his own independent company. (Chapters 34–40 and 89)
