Sehn
Sehn is an experienced merman merchant and the father of Reishi Senyu. He brings Reishi through the Baquaire Archipelago to gain negotiating experience while largely withholding direct intervention. Beneath an unassuming manner, he possesses a Yellow-grade race and a profession too complex for young Kai Tylenn to read beyond type three or higher.
Biography
Merfolk Merchants to Unexpected
Sehn introduces himself as a merchant and recognizes that Kai reached the Second Layer of race advancement unusually young. He explains that merfolk trade deep-sea goods and act as intermediaries for ocean peoples who cannot or prefer not to travel on land, embellishing the family's prestigious dealings until Reishi mocks him. During negotiations, Sehn deliberately lets his recently advanced son lead. He intervenes only to point out what Reishi has missed and to assess higher-grade herbs and beast scales through a golden monocle, turning the small Archipelago sale into practical merchant training. (Chapters 34–36)
When Reishi chooses to wait for Kai's difficult bait-poison order, Sehn repeatedly challenges the judgment and wagers that the inexperienced alchemist will fail to deliver at least ninety percent. Kai arrives with only two doses missing, allowing Reishi to win the substance of the bet. Sehn then criticizes the gift of old alchemy volumes and haggles over whether he owes ten, fifteen, or twenty silvers. His behavior tests Reishi's confidence and precision, but the chapters do not state whether every objection is a planned lesson or ordinary paternal competitiveness. (Chapters 38–40)
Closing Deals
By Reishi's later meeting with Kai, Sehn has taken the Fortuna away from the Archipelago and is reportedly chasing profit along the Golden Coast. Reishi has chosen to remain behind, built his own fleet, and jokes that his father's supposed maxim “business before pleasure” is implausible because Sehn enjoys mixing commerce and leisure. This is secondhand evidence: Sehn does not appear directly, and the corpus does not show his route, deals, dangers, or reaction to Reishi's independent success. (Chapter 89)
Appearance and personality
Sehn is an older merman whose outwardly unassuming appearance conceals far greater Guide development than Kai initially expects. He wears or uses a golden monocle when examining valuable materials. The corpus does not supply his hair, crest colors, clothing, precise age, injuries, or Yellow race stage. (Chapters 34–35)
He is cultured, proud of merfolk trade, fond of pompous stories, and easily drawn into teasing exchanges with his son. In business he is observant and disciplined enough to let Reishi make decisions rather than seizing control, though he continually probes for mistakes and bargains even over family wagers. This makes him both mentor and irritant: his pressure gives Reishi room to prove judgment, while his competitiveness prevents easy praise. (Chapters 34–40)
Skills, magic, and the Guide
- Yellow-grade race: Kai's Mana Sense and Inspect identify Sehn's race as Yellow but cannot resolve the stage. That establishes a high grade relative to the islanders Kai knows, not a date or method of advancement. (Chapter 34)
- Type-three-or-higher profession: Sehn's profession has a mana network too intricate for Kai to read and is at least type three. Its name, exact type, grade terminology, skills, and evolution history are absent, so no particular merchant ability can be assigned to it. (Chapter 34)
- Appraisal and trade knowledge: Sehn recognizes grade-two herbs and tier-three beast scales, notices the commercial significance of Kai's alchemy, and detects an omission in Reishi's first assessment. He uses a monocle for close examination, leaving it unclear how much comes from a Guide skill, the item, or experience. (Chapters 34–35)
- Merchant network and navigation: He describes deep-sea sourcing and interspecies brokerage and later sails the Fortuna along the Golden Coast. The source does not show him diving, fighting, piloting, or activating a named movement or negotiation skill, so those mechanics remain unknown. (Chapters 34 and 89)
No public power-progression table is supplied because Sehn's formal grades are observed only at one point and no advancement event is documented.
Relationships
- Reishi Senyu: Sehn gives Reishi control of negotiations, points out missed details, questions risky decisions, and honors their wager only after further haggling. Reishi later chooses an independent regional business while Sehn departs with the family ship. (Chapters 34–40 and 89)
- Kai Tylenn: Sehn recognizes Kai's unusual race advancement, evaluates his products, and doubts he can finish a demanding order. Kai's delivery proves Reishi's judgment sound, though no lasting direct partnership with Sehn is shown. (Chapters 34–40)
- Ocean trading partners: Sehn says his enterprise supplies land markets with deep-sea resources and brokers for ocean peoples, including rare siren dealings in the family's past. No named current partner or contract is established. (Chapter 34)
Items
- Golden monocle: Sehn adjusts a golden monocle to inspect high-grade herbs and beast scales. Whether it magnifies normally, carries appraisal magic, or merely assists a skill is not stated. (Chapter 35)
- The Fortuna: Sehn's merchant ship carries the family through the Archipelago and later along the Golden Coast. Its ownership is associated with Sehn, but the vessel's enchantments, crew strength, and cargo capacity are not specified. (Chapters 34–40 and 89)
